Sega's Castle of Illusion remake will launch on September 3 for PS3, then arrive on XBLA and PC the next day, September 4. The platformer will set players back 1200 MSP, or $14.99 in North America, and will cost £ 9.99 and €14.99 in Europe. Sega also announced that those pre-ordering the game through PSN will receive the original Genesis version of Castle of Illusion for free, along with one theme and three avatars. What's more, the Genesis game will be available for download right after you pre-order the HD remake, so those finding the wait for the new version excruciating can feel a little more at ease.

Sega sent out a teaser trailer for what could only be a re-release of Castle of Illusion, the classic Disney platformer developed by Sega's Shinobi Team for the Sega Genesis. Ratings for the re-release surfaced last month, a mere week before Capcom announced WayForward's remake of another classic Disney platformer, Ducktales Remastered. In the trailer above, we can spot the same wind-up soldier toy enemies from the original, not to mention Mizrabel herself, the main shape-shifting villain of Castle of Illusion. The teaser trailer ends with "summer 2013," presumably as a launch window and not the time when Sega plans to announce what we already know.

  • Castle of Illusion ratings suggest re-release of Mickey's Genesis classic

Multiple ratings for Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse indicate the classic Sega-developed Genesis platformer is getting a digital re-release. An Australian Classification Board rating for a PS3 game by the same name popped up this week, while Pockett.net spotted Brazilian classification ratings from last month for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and Vita.A couple of other Sega retro games turned up with ratings recently; we saw multiplatform ratings for Game Gear platformer-puzzler Tails Adventure earlier this week, which was soon followed by an ACB rating for fellow Game Gear entry Crystal Warriors - that came to Japan's 3DS eShop last month. It seems likely Tails Adventure and Crystal Warriors are headed for the 3DS Virtual Console in the west. However, bearing in mind Sega's penchant for bundling retro re-releases, does Castle of Illusion point towards an 'Illusion' collection, with Land of Illusion and World of Illusion also on the way? Let's hope so, if only for all the Arrested Development clips we could link to.

  • Disney trademarks Castle of Illusion, but M-I-C-K-E-why?

Disney has put in a new trademark request for the term "Castle of Illusion," which presumably refers to the old Sega Genesis game, Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse. The trademark is specifically targeted at video game software. We're not sure what Disney intends to use this trademark for, if anything. It could be a brand new release also set in the castle that Mickey platformed through while trying to save Minnie, or it could be a re-release of the old game on a new platform, like Virtual Console release or even iOS. Whatever its release plans, Disney is apparently laying out the legal groundwork for something.
