After dismissing its Inside Xbox teams in the US and Europe earlier this year, Microsoft has hired a new exec to oversee the creation of original video content for the Xbox brand. Nancy Tellem will oversee a new LA-based studio responsible for producing the content and report directly to Microsoft Studios corporate VP Phil Spencer.Tellem's last post was with CBS, where she served as entertainment president. Her first goal is to put together a team who will start production on exclusive series for Xbox, content that will reach "a very broad range of consumers," she hopes. "We're going to reach out to a very broad range of consumers. When I first got to CBS we looked at what the core audience was and built from there, and that's just what I'm going to do again."The types of content she'll help produce aren't set in stone right now – it could be long-form content or more short-form independent pieces. "What's so exciting about this opportunity is we're looking at the next iteration of television," Tellem told LA Times. "We're starting from scratch and we'll be looking at linear and interactive content, both longer-form, like television, and shorter form."

Gather around the iPad Trekkies, have we got a treat for you -- CBS Interactive has just unleashed the Star Trek PADD App. At its core is a deep database of information about the shows and movies, including cast and character data, details about planets that populate the universe, and an episode guide. Best of all, the whole experience is presented in the classic LCARS interface that should be familiar to any fan of The Next Generation (or TNG as the cool kids are calling it). In addition to serving as a reference for all things Trek, the app pulls in feeds from the official Facebook and Twitter pages. You can get grab it, in all its black and pastel-colored glory, for $5 at the source link and check out the gallery below. %Gallery-128200%

Visit CBS.com from your iPad right now and all you'll get is a full episode of Survivor and clips from various other shows. By the start of the Fall season, however, CBS Interactive SVP Anthony Soohoo is promising content parity between its Flash-based website and HTML5-compliant iPad portal. While on the subject, he also notes that the video strategy will be entirely web-based, with no plans for an app à la ABC Player. Flash isn't being subjected to a veritable slapsgiving, however, as it'll remain the desktop technology of choice. Soohoo notes HTML5's toolset for measurement and encryption isn't quite at the same level yet. Full video interview after the break, and iPad users? This fall, expect something quite legen -- oh, you know where we're going with this, but still we'll pause for dramatic effect -- dary.
