Well well well. Well. What do we have here? Apparently the cats and kittens over at T-Mobile have something special planned on Tuesday, April 21st. We've just gotten a very brief email letting us know that something was going down, but without any other detail. Obviously our gadget-alarms started clanging, and the way we see it we've only got a few things to get excited about. Will we see the launch of Cupcake? Could this be the official US unveiling of the Magic? Or perhaps we'll finally get to see the new Sidekick which just hit the FCC. Look -- anything is possible, but whatever happens, we'll be there. What do you guys think is in store?

  • Huawei's enigmatic Android phone bound for T-Mobile in Q3?

Take this with some skepticism, but according to tmonews.com a "trusted source" has revealed an Android-based Huawei phone is currently being tested and heading to T-Mobile in Q3, a timeframe we heard about at MWC. Specs reportedly include a 5 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, WiFi, and Cupcake, naturally. No word on UMA, but the site claims that a certain Mr. Blurrycam is dropping off photos and more dtails in next few weeks, so we'll keep our eyes on that.

  • Latest Cupcake build flaunted on video, still no closer to retail G1s

I f we can't will an official OTA update from T-Mobile into existence with the combined powers of our love, we suppose the next best thing is watching lucky jerks with Dev Phone 1s get their Cupcake on from afar. To that end, Android dev Joey Sochacki has decided to fire up a series of videos he's calling "Cupcake Sundays," where he'll be downloading and installing the latest and greatest Cupcake code from the official repository every week for a public tour. The inaugural video in the series here doesn't show anything particularly mind-blowing -- and some of this stuff, like the three-dimensional world time globe, we've seen before -- but the Live Folders and on-screen keyboard tours are must-sees for anyone curious what's coming down the pike for G1s, Dreams, and Magics of the world. The Android team also appears to be touting the new black-and-white viewfinder in the camera app as a "feature," even though it's really a downgrade designed to boost refresh rate -- but hey, if this is the price we have to pay to get a whole slew of new goodies, send it along, T-Mobile. Seriously. Follow the break for the full video.

Well, after weeks of speculations and false alarms, it looks like T-Mobile's officially saying the "Cupcake" Android update will hit the G1 sometime next month. That's at least the word according to the T-Mo spokeperson Pocket-lint got hold of -- who went out of his way to disclaim any connection with the upcoming launch of the HTC Magic. In any event, we're hoping all this bake time has fixed some of those bugs and lag problems, but we'll see in a few weeks.[Via Talk Android]

The gang over at Surveyor Robotics have introduced SRV-1 Console, an open source Android app for operating robots based on the company's camera board and firmware. Using the G1's WiFi capabilities, the operator can access a live video feed from the robot and control the device using the handset's touchscreen and accelerometer. So far the app's been demonstrated with several robots, including the SRV-1 Blackfin, the YARB Robotic Blimp, and last but not least, our old friend Forknife. We have all the robots in action via Youtube video after the break.[Via Linux Devices]

  • Android Dev Phone 1 gets in on the Cupcake action early, deemed to be a little undercooked

Admit it, you want some Cupcake, but you're afraid of ditching the physical keyboard altogether. Good news for those of you who've snagged an Android Dev Phone 1, because your wish may be our command. The guys at Make have the lowdown on how to flash Cupcake to the device and experience that on-screen keyboard in all its glory. The hacked OS certainly wasn't ready for primetime, and that hotly-anticipated soft keyboard was still a little buggy -- but there is some hope for using the phone with one hand. We'll bet Google / T-Mobile keep this one in the oven a bit longer until it's ready to take on the masses, but at least we're seeing some fresh baked goodness on something other than the Magic. There's video of the Macguyver'd OS in action after the break. [Via Geek.com]

We can already tell that this naming thing is getting out of hand, but for all intents and purposes, the handset you see above is the same HTC G2 we've seen hosted up in T-Mobile documentation and those gnarly in the wild snaps. Now, according to some very believable Vodafone snippets, we're being told that this here handset will launch exclusively on the aforesaid carrier as the Magic, bringing with it a 3.2 megapixel camera, HSPA, WiFi and GPS. Also of note, Cupcake will be loaded on from day one, though there's no word on pricing and availability just yet.

Eagerly awaiting your opportunity to try out Cupcake on your G1 or other Android-powered device? Sadly we still don't know exactly when you'll get your chance, but we can at least give you an opportunity to check it out emu-style. Nullwire has the links, files, and instructions you'll need to get the current revision Android emulator up and running on your home computer, plus the freshly-frosted binaries you'll want to get a taste of some Cupcake action. We verified everything does work, so hit the read link if you want to take a bite yourself, or, if you're just looking for a guilt-free glimpse, take a look in the gallery. It has freshly baked screens of the new notepad app, the global time globe, and of course the delectable virtual keyboard. %Gallery-43253%

  • Android Cupcake in all its keyboard-having glory, T-Mobile plays dumb

It's anybody's guess when we're going to get this stuff in the G1, so we may as well torture ourselves in the meanwhile with some visuals, right? IntoMobile has posted a handful of Cupcake screen grabs, showing scintillating features like a task manager (minus the "manager" part since you can only see what's running, not kill processes), a work-in-progress world clock, new controls for transition effects and visuals, and -- of course -- the all-important virtual keyboard. It's good stuff all around, and realistically, it's stuff that should've found its way into the shipping build. On a related note, we got an official statement from T-Mobile regarding Cupcake's release on the G1 today, and it's every bit as vague and unhelpful as we'd expect it to be: "According to the Android team, 'Cupcake,' which is the code name for an Android software build, is still a work in progress that is considered to be a development branch and not for general availability. We will update you as T-Mobile G1 software updates are made available to T-Mobile customers." In other words, this could be out tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year, but considering the totally varied completeness of different Cupcake features, we wouldn't be surprised to see it doled out in bite-sized increments over multiple over-the-air updates.[Via Talk Android]

  • What's the deal with Cupcake on the G1?

We pretty much know Cupcake's coming to the G1 at some point, but when? Hard to say -- we won't know for sure until the first batch of lucky sons of guns gets that OTA update message -- but Google And Blog claims that the next window for an update to go down will be at the end of January after a mid-January release was apparently missed (gee, that never happens). The first release to incorporate Cupcake features will apparently be RC31, and, if it's any consolation, it's said that strong positive reaction to Cupcake's features has caused T-Mobile has doubled its efforts to get this stuff out of the door. So yeah -- we wish we could report that we've heard stories of RC31 in the wild, but hey, at least they're still trying to get us this jazz before the month's out.[Via TmoNews]

It's not just running Android -- it's running Cupcake! That alone should make it the envy of every G1 owner, though Koolu's custom-loaded FreeRunner lacks 3G and a physical keyboard (which, when you think about it, pretty much makes Cupcake a must anyway so you can type stuff). Ultimately, your average Joe still isn't going to want to use a FreeRunner day in and day out -- regardless of what operating system it's running -- but it's really awesome to see that the right hardware and software platforms are now out there and readily available for quick 'n easy hacking.%Gallery-41528%

  • HTC believes Cupcake will come to the T-Mobile G1

    12.30.2008

We've already seen it go down unofficially, but we've received word from HTC today that Android's coveted "Cupcake" branch of updates and fixes -- or at least a majority of it -- will likely be making it to the G1 in the future as a legitimate over-the-air push. HTC isn't involved in deciding what updates get pushed to the G1 or when, but given the update cadence so far and the G1's support for Cupcake's capabilities, the company believes that it's just a matter of time before T-Mobile makes it happen. The timing is still a big question -- HTC's more or less out of the loop on the schedule, and it's up to Google and T-Mobile to figure out how it's going to play out. We'll keep you updated as we find out more!Update: We pressed HTC spokespeople to give us a little more to go on, but got the standard "we can't comment on rumors or speculation" line. T-Mobile, Google, your move -- you've got plenty of folks waiting. A belated Festivus gift, perhaps?

We already found that the Cupcake branch of Android made available a software keyboard on Nokia's line of Internet Tablets, and now that very functionality is being showcased on a bona fide T-Mobile G1. We can't say how stoked we are to see a real deal on-screen keyboard on the handset, and we're even more jazzed about the eventual release of these caloric goodies to the masses. Have a look yourself at the vid just after the break.[Thanks, TareX]

It has been but a matter of hours since we first heard of the Cupcake branch of Android, but the tweaked-for-the-better operating system has apparently already made its way onto Nokia's Internet Tablets. The latest port of NITdroid is chock full of those sweet, highly fattening Cupcake goodies, and honestly, this whole development makes us cautiously optimistic about where all this is headed. Anyone care to give their N810 somethin' new to run on? Let us know how it works out.

  • Google secretly crafts Android codename "cupcake," fixes and features aplenty

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/software/Google_secretly_crafts_Android_codename_cupcake'; Okay, so right here: this is where Android starts to get awesome. The platform is being hacked and developed at a blistering pace that closed operating systems can only dream of, and to top it all off, Google's now gifted the world with a bunch of changes it had been developing in secrecy in a private branch called "cupcake." Why "cupcake," you ask? We're not sure, but given the list of fixes and additions we're seeing here, we can only assume it has something to do with how tasty it's going to be once it gets rolled into a shipping firmware. For starters, it rolls in circa-November WebKit code and significantly boosts browsing performance, fixes a novel's worth of issues with the email app, and -- wait for it -- adds support for stereo Bluetooth. Of course, we're at the mercy of T-Mobile and HTC for getting this onto retail G1s, so it really makes a strong case for picking up a Dev Phone 1, doesn't it?[Via Android Community, thanks Ben F.]
