Is it weird that Shovel Knight is now a playable character in Road Redemption, the spiritual successor to Road Rash? Like, really weird? Yes, of course it is. It is also, however, kind of awesome to see our beloved, blue-suited hero smacking people with a shovel at unlawful speeds. If Croaker were around, he might call the whole situation a cycle of violence. Road Redemption is currently available via Steam Early Access. [Image: Dark Seas Games]

As a spiritual successor to classic motorcycle combat game Road Rash, Road Redemption includes all manner of violent implements to splatter your fellow racers across the asphalt - including a borderline-cruel grenade launcher. You can see the explosive ordinance in the footage above alongside the newly revealed uzi, though keep in mind the game is still in the relatively early stages of development. Far from an actual trailer for Road Redemption, that clip was issued to backers of the game's successful Kickstarter campaign to demonstrate the development team's progress so far. If you like what you see, you can pre-order Road Redemption from developer Dark Seas Games. Pricing options range from $15 to $500, depending on how much bonus swag you're interested in. There is currently no official release date for Road Redemption, though the game's Kickstarter page estimates an August 2014 debut.

Down to its final nine days, the Road Redemption Kickstarter campaign is hoping to entice the rest of its needed financing by announcing some stretch goals. If developer Dark Seas Games secures $178,000, the developer says a Xbox Live Arcade port is possible; $198,000 will guarantee Oculus Rift support. Road Redemption is the spiritual successor to Road Rash developed by fans of the franchise, centered around motorcycle gangs fighting over drug distribution routes. Built with Unity, Road Redemption will launch on Mac OSX, PC, Linux and Wii U should the Kickstarter campaign yield the $160,000 needed in funding. At the time of publishing, the project sits at under $100,000.
