Game studios normally bend over backwards to discourage pirates and keep titles off of any piracy sites, but don't tell that to Acid Wizard. When the studio saw that a young player asked for a refund for its horror game Darkwood out of a fear that his parents wouldn't like the cost of the game, it decided to offer a safe, unprotected copy of the game on The Pirate Bay. It wants to offer you a chance to play Darkwood if money's simply too tight. There are only two requests: think about buying the game when you can, and don't buy it through key resellers like G2A.

You can't play Darkwood until it shines a light on Early Access on July 24, but you can make a pivotal decision in an adventurer's life: fight or flight? Don't fret too much about your choice – the survival horror game will show you equally-unsettling things either way. [Image: Acid Wizard Studio]

Following a successful crowdfunding campaign, developer Acid Wizard Studio has announced plans to bring its unorthodox survival horror game Darkwood to Steam Early Access. As Richard mentioned, Darkwood differentiates itself from the legions of other spooky games via procedurally generated horror. Each time you step into the gloomy, Soviet Bloc landscape, the world around you is created anew, offering more replayability than one would expect from simply glancing at Darkwood's relatively rudimentary top-down, pixel art graphics. What's more, Darkwood also features RPG-esque character progression and crafting mechanics, which lend additional layers of complexity to the superficially simple frightfest. Unfortunately lacking from Acid Wizard's announcement is any word on when exactly Darkwood might reach Steam Early Access. The developer claims it simply wanted to keep would-be players abreast of the situation - plus, the announcement provides a handy excuse to debut the teaser you see above. • Darkwood: Not just your average 2D roguelike survival horror game

As video games have always taught us, you don't need fancy graphics and surround sound to build a convincing atmosphere. Enter Darkwood, a survival horror experience played from a top-down 2D perspective. Developed by Acid Wizard, Darkwood takes place in a procedurally generated world, featuring permadeath, RPG elements and a crafting system (can't block out the horrors of the night without building some barricades). Darkwood seems to place heavy emphasis on light and dark, limiting the player's field of view to ratchet up the tension. The visuals may be simple, but if the trailer is any indication, the final product looks extra creepy. Example: Why is the generator talking? Darkwood is looking for funding on IndieGoGo, hoping to raise $40,000. As of this writing it's only a few hundred dollars away with seven days to go. It's planned for release on PC, Mac and Linux. If you're into survival horror, check it out.
