This time of year, you can count on two things: long lines anywhere you can purchase goods and/or services outside of your home, and sales at those capitals of consumerism. Sega's hitching itself to the sales star now by slashing prices on its digital wares across PSN, XBLA and iOS starting this week. PSN's lineup includes healthily discounted classics, added savings for PlayStation Plus subscribers and a smattering of newer stuff on the cheap until January 3: Daytona USA, Sega Rally Arcade, Sonic Adventure, Renegade Ops and more. On the iOS side, classic titles make up the majority of what's on sale for $0.99; Golden Axe 2 and 3, Chu Chu Rocket, Streets of Rage 2 and 3, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, and Sega's newest iOS game, Brick People, are on sale until January 9. Xbox Live Arcade users get the least amount of variety -- only Renegade Ops and After Burner Climax are on sale. You can download each at their reduced price of 800 MS Points ($10) and 400 MS Points ($5) respectively until January 2.

Our review of War of the Worlds will be coming up soon, which leaves us just two titles for XBLA in Brief this week. First up is Daytona USA, Sega's classic arcade racer. Next is Zombie Apocalypse: Never Die Alone, a sequel to Zombie Apocalypse that adds bigger levels, an upgrade system and some annoying new characters. There are new Xbox Live Arcade games released every week. We realize that our readers are busy, attractive people, and may not have time to download and examine each and every new XBLA game. You've got busy, attractive person stuff to do, after all. Not to worry though, because we've done the work for you, downloading every single trial game and giving you a taste of what to expect. Watch XBLA in Brief every week to see which games deserve a closer look. When you have the time, of course.

  • Daytona USA coming to PSN, XBLA in late October

Way back in 1993, you braved suspiciously dim lighting and an unpleasant, smoky aroma to see Sega's "Model 2" chipset in action at your local arcade. Its first game, Daytona USA, looped you in with its fancy textures, blistering 60 frames-per-second graphics and oh my god there is a giant Sonic the Hedgehog carved into the mountain. Years after arcade-perfect ports provided the ultimate incentive to get a console, Sega is bringing the "original" Daytona USA to the North American PlayStation Network on October 25th, and to Xbox Live Arcade the following day. Europe will see it in "late November," Sega says. Ten bucks gets you "classic retro graphics" presented in HD, widescreen format, steering wheel support (all wheels for Xbox 360, and only Logitech GT Driving Force on PS3) and eight-player online racing. Oh, and this version of Dayyyyytoooonnaaa helps you entertain guests with the game's wonderful, unbearable soundtrack in Karaoke Mode ... it says here. "Let's go away," indeed.

In recent weeks, what appeared to be a promotional flyer for a new Sega AM2 arcade game, Sega Racing Classic, has been making the rounds. Its inclusion of imagery closely matching that of Daytona USA lead many to believe there might finally be a new sequel to the, er, racing classic. As it turns out, coin-op industry site Highway Games has obtained an official rundown on the game, and it's ... an HD remake of the original Daytona USA, sans the name.According to the site -- which also has pictures of the sit-down cabinet -- Sega Racing Classic is "a revamped version of Sega's smash hit Daytona USA, featuring the original tracks and heart pumping action with all new high definition graphics." Specifically, the machine sports a 32" widescreen LCD display and the game runs at 1280x720 (720p) resolution. As suggested by the aforementioned flyer, SRC is powered by Sega's latest arcade hardware, Ringwide.Since Sega no longer has the rights to the "Daytona" name, it's likely that the game's title won't be the only change. There's the little issue of the attract sequence music, with its enchanting repetition of the word "Daytona" along with the lyrics "let's fly away." Still, whatever the name, Sega's classic racer in HD is a welcome surprise. We imagine some of you have already started online petitions to bring the game to PSN and XBLA before even finishing this post.[Via Arcade Heroes]

  • Wii Warm Up: Daytonaaaaaaaaaa

Doot do doot do doot do doot do DOOOT DOOOOOOOOOOO! Good or bad awesome, the theme to Daytona USA is extremely memorable. So memorable, that it defines not only arcade racing, but also sort of defines the entire Sega Saturn platform (for us anyway, even despite the game being nowhere near arcade perfect). We haven't found any music in a Wii game that does the same thing. In fact, there doesn't seem to be any standout music in a Wii game so far, except for maybe the pleasant little jingle in the Everybody Votes Channel, which kind of sounds like something from Super Monkey Ball 2. What do you think? Do you know of any Wii games with timeless music? Let's go away to the comments!
