  • Capcom asks: how about Dead Rising 2?

With Dead Rising only a week old, Capcom is already breaking out the age-old question: how about a sequel? Eight questions into a survey on the title, Capcom poses the following question:If a sequel to this game were to be released, would you buy it? I would even buy a new console to play a sequel on if I had to. I would buy it if it came out on a console I own. I would wait and see how it is received first. I would want to play it, but wouldn't want to buy it. I wouldn't buy it. Don't take this to mean they are already working on a sequel, because this is just a standard query. However, with the positive reviews it's received (harnessed mostly by a gripes of stringent story structure and save system) and the brisk sales we predict it will have, Dead Rising 2 is inevitable. If you take the survey, be sure to ask for online co-op. We'd love to see it.[via 1UP]

  • Dead Rising creator fends off fans at mall

You could say a lot of things about Capcom's Keiji Inafune ("he looks youthful"), but you can't say he's without a sense of humor. Why else would the creator of a video game about a man trapped in a shopping mall fending off swarms of brain-hungry zombies trap himself in a shopping mall to fend off swarms of autograph-hungry fans? Despite the veiled insult, fans lined up for a chance to get some of Inafune's brain droppings scribbled on various things. Fans like Joystiq VIP Philip Palermo, creator of the super limited-edition Joystiq-zilla tee. Philip managed to make it out alive, but not before taking some great snaps of the mayhem, Frank West-style, and sending us in his observations of the event.

The summer gaming slump shuffles on, slowly, lifelessly, with vacant eyes, targeting the pile of grey meat residing in your skull. It's been a tough summer, and Capcom's new zombie-killing/shopping simulator aims to spread (through a post brain-chomp exchange of bodily fluids) its unique brand of humor and action throughout the 360 nation. So, will Dead Rising take its place in the zombie gaming pantheon next to Capcom's Resident Evil series? Gamespot (84/100) - points out the repetition elephant in the innovation room: "As a departure from the zombie games of old, Dead Rising is a great success, wonderfully blending campy undertones and visceral, zombie-killing action into something highly playable. It suffers from structural faults, and the game does find itself leaning heavier on repetition than you'd probably like, but Dead Rising overcomes these shortcomings by being a lot of fun to play. 1UP (80/100) - also praises the title's inventiveness while noting the "typical" problems , writing, "Dead Rising brings to mind memories of other ambitious games that tried to expand the survival-horror genre (like Blue Stinger on Dreamcast back in the day). It has all the hallmarks -- new play styles, a decidedly different pace from the Resident Evil franchise, and (in theory at least) next-generation graphics. And while it suffers from some typical early-generation pitfalls, it's a feverishly inventive game that triumphs over the very shortcomings that threaten to hold it back." IGN (83/100) - reiterates the fun factor, and credits said fun with saving the game from its other problems: "With a better save system, more intelligent NPCs, a more forgiving story progression, and tighter controls, Dead Rising could have been even more fun than it already is. Even despite those issues, after several times through it's impossible to deny the appeal inherent in slaughtering Willamette's zombified shoppers." Sounds like we have a game where you kill zombies over and over and over and over and, despite being repetitive, manages to be inventive and ambitious all at the same time. Killing hoards of zombies in a shopping mall is pure fun? Who'da thunk?See Also: Joystiq MetareviewsRead - MetacriticRead - Game Rankings

  • Swarm Dead Rising producer at signing tomorrow

Despite his name, Keiji Inafune clearly isn't the wary type, opting to appear in public tomorrow and openly inviting gamers to inundate him with requests to sign their copies of Dead Rising. The esteemed developer's latest game, yet another entry into the zombie-ridden shopping mall sim genre, has already generated a great deal of buzz, possibly because it allows you to beat undead cretons to a pulp with baseball bats, benches and finely matured wheels of cheese. If you plan on attending the signing event tomorrow, here's what you need to know: Date: Tuesday, August 8, 2006 Time: 4:00PM - 6:00PM Location: EB Games, Redmond Town Center16495 NE 74th StreetRedmond, Washington 98052 (Tel. 425-895-8331) Demeanor: Approachable, but may unexpectedly and infrequently lunge And don't forget, you'll actually have to purchase a copy of the game in order to have it signed. There will be plenty of free Xbox t-shirts, however, no doubt meant to distract the crowd's inherent urge to tear Mr. Inafune limb from limb and devour his brain.

  • Dead Rising demo here, Gears demo not coming

You know what time it is, don't you? It's time to clear out your 360 hard drive, swollen from demo after demo, turgid and bloated. We've got yet another (Friday) demo, this time Capcom's new zombie-killing title, and she's a big girl. Weighing in at 1014MB, the demo might appear large, but with a 15-minute time limit, it's really just supposed to whet your appetite for zombie gore (just a taste, you're not supposed to swallow it). That's the good news. The bad news: all that room we cleared out for yesterday's "BIG" announcement is gonna be used for the Dead Rising demo. Emergence Day was it, folks. There won't be any face-melting Gears of War demo coming out prior to the retail launch Emergence Day, so says Epic's resident party pooper, Mark Rein: "I don't see any way we could do a demo before the game comes out. We've said that before. Demos take a long time to create and polish and we can't afford to get derailled like that if we want to have the game in stores by Thanksgiving."What about that super-polished E3 multiplayer demo everyone keeps gabbing about? We'd settle for that, y'know. [Thanks for all the tips!]Read - Dead Rising demo on XBLMRead - No Gears demo pre-release

  • Dead Rising not banned, facing unique 'unrated' status in Germany

Over on his blog, Xbox Live Germany's Boris Schneider-Johne breaks down the peculiar circumstances surrounding Dead Rising's status in Germany. Earlier this week, reports suggested that Germany's software rating organization, USK, had outright banned the title. Schneider-Johne explains that it's more complicated than that.In Germany, a game can't be banned until it's released. And it's not USK that bans the game, it's Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien (a.k.a. Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons) -- or 'BPjM' for short. But BPjM can't ban a game that's rated, so, in order for a game to be banned, USK must decide not to rate it. In other words, only 'unrated' games can be banned. But again, banning can't be applied until a game is released, and BPjM will only consider banning a title after a youth organization has applied for the ban. However, even if a game is banned, retailers can still sell it legally to adults, they just can't advertise the game. The catch is, Microsoft will not permit 'unrated' games to be published because it undermines the Xbox 360's built-in parental control system. So ... Schneider-Johne concludes, "Dead Rising could be legally sold in Germany, but won't be published." Confused yet?

Gaming Bits reports that Germany's software rating organization, the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK), would not approve Capcom's upcoming zombie hack-n-slasher Dead Rising. If upheld, this would mark the first instance in which an Xbox 360 game has been banned in any territory/region.As of this post's publishing time, Dead Rising is still listed on the German version of Xbox.com, although the release date (or 'Veröffentlichungsdatum') has been changed to "TBD."
