Toby "Tobuscus" Turner's literal adaptations of trailers are both hilarious and impressive. His latest effort is no different: a Dead Space 2 TV ad combining his parodying skills with the ad's song, Smashing Pumpkins' 1995 hit, "Bullet with Butterfly Wings."

  • PSA: Dead Space 2 DLC workaround for non-Gold members

If you're an Xbox Live "free" member ready to "strategically dismember" bits of EA because you can't redeem the DLC included in the Dead Space 2 "Collector's Edition", just go ahead and put away the plasma cutter. The redemption card (pictured) gives instructions that won't work for those who aren't Gold members -- but there is a workaround. An EA rep tells Joystiq that Live free members should go to the "Extras" menu and input the code in the "redeem code" section. This will unlock the single-player Zealot Suit and Zealot Force Gun without the need for a Gold membership. The problem with going through the Online Pass screen is that it's used for multiplayer, which you can't access without a Gold membership. This isn't the first (and likely not the last) time that DLC insert cards have caused confusion. [Thanks, Dayton W.]

Dead Space 2's scares aren't dependent only on space monsters and creepy noises. You also have to see what's going on, or, at least, see the eerie shadow of what's going on. This developer diary introduces DS2's dedicated lighting team -- and shows lots of atmospherically lit in-game shots.

You're at work. The boss is really getting on your nerves. Dead Space 2 is out today ... but it'll be at least six hours before you manage to extract yourself from the sprawl (of cubicles). You could strategically dismember your coworkers, sure, but that's not only difficult, it's illegal. Instead, we're going to recommend that you download Dead Space for your iPhone/iPod Touch or iPad and get down to the Dead Space-ing. Use stasis to freeze an enemy, switch to the plasma cutter, orient it vertically, sever his arm and then use kinesis to pick it up and shoot it through his torso. Having spent some hours with the game already, we can promise you this: Dead Space on iOS is a surprisingly competent mobile approximation of Dead Space. We'll have a full review later this week, but you've still got half a work-day to kill.

  • Dead Space 2 DLC 'Severed' adds two single-player chapters, brings back DSG

While Dead Space 2 has only been on retail shelves for about ... oh, a couple hours, that hasn't stopped EA from announcing more Dead Space 2 in the form of "an all-new digital download pack that extends the Dead Space 2 story with the addition of two standalone chapters in the single-player game." Most notably, "Dead Space 2: Severed" features the return of some nobody named Gabe Weller and ... Lexine "Dead Space Girl" Murdoch! Some of you may recall a certain blog's fondness for DSG ... we still remember seeing her for the first time (and haven't gotten her out of our heads since). The only other details we have on Severed include a release window of "soon" for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. And yes, PC gamers, we realize that means your platform of choice isn't included and, since we wouldn't want anyone to miss out on an opportunity to be reunited with Ms. Murdoch, we've asked the publisher to clarify what's going on. [Update: An EA rep got back to VG247 and said, simply, "Dead Space 2: Severed will not be available on the PC." So, we guess that's that?]

  • Dead Space 2 review: Isaac Clarke's terrifying world

I died within the first thirty seconds of Dead Space 2. That should immediately impart an idea of what kind of horror experience to expect. Dead Space 2 is not a slow-burn, psychological thriller that kept me up at night, playing on my natural fear of the unknown. It is an action title that rarely slowed long enough to let me soak in the atmosphere or take stock of the horrors around me. That's unfortunate, because the few moments when things do slow down are genuinely creepy. More often, Dead Space 2 -- like its predecessor -- leans on quick shocks, rote horror tricks, plenty of gore and, more importantly, murdering lots of monsters in interesting ways. %Gallery-114830%

If our preview of the PS3 version of Dead Space Extraction was too stationary for you, PlayStation Blog has posted a new video interview with producer Zach Mumbach. The interview briefly touches on the improved visuals, which Mumbach notes are now "full HD." It also explains the new Move controls, which obviate the need for the Wii version's Nunchuk, leaving your other hand free to recoil in terror. Head over to PlayStation Blog to see it for yourself.

  • Dead Space 2 includes code for 'Ser Isaac of Clarke' armor in Dragon Age 2

EA has announced that early copies of Dead Space 2 (due out next Tuesday, January 25) will include a code to unlock special "Ser Isaac of Clarke" armor in Dragon Age 2, which arrives March 8. As you can see in the video after the break, the armor is a little more, well, medieval than Clarke's rig in Dead Space, but the resemblance is certainly there. And it's not just purty -- the armor's got rune slots in it; requires high dexterity and cunning skills to wear; and adds bonuses to armor and crit damage. According to the fine print, it seems like Xbox 360 and PC codes will be sharable across platforms, but the PS3 code from Dead Space 2 will only unlock the armor in the PS3 version of Dragon Age 2. If Isaac Clarke's career as an alien-slicing space-gineer never works out, maybe he can just stick with video game cameos -- he's already got quite the resumé.

Marketing agencies rarely want to promote their product as "an atrocity." However, a new ad campaign by EA does exactly that. "Your Mom Hates Dead Space 2" subjects focus group participants, comprised entirely of older females, to experience footage from Visceral's upcoming survival horror game.

We've heard Isaac Clarke's voice, and it's deeper than you'd expect. It's also got an edge of fear that simply didn't manifest as he stomped through the Ishimura, saving the day with nary a whisper or whimper. If you're worried that a talkative Isaac Clarke might ruin Dead Space 2, though, you shouldn't be. "In terms of how much he talks, last game, zero," said executive producer Steve Papoutsis. "This game, he's somewhere between a two and a half and a three. He's not really wordy, he's not shooting off a bunch of one-liners, he's just speaking when it makes sense for the story." %Gallery-112697%

  • Dead Space save file unlocks original plasma cutter in Dead Space 2

Here's a nice bonus for fans of the original Dead Space. If you have any save file -- completed or not -- from the first title, you'll unlock the original plasma cutter right off the bat for use in the upcoming sequel. Hardcore players should be more than familiar with the gun, thanks to an Achievement that forces players to complete an entire playthrough using only that gun. But don't expect the plasma cutter to give you much of an advantage at the beginning of the Dead Space 2 campaign. Although you'll get access to the gun, Visceral Games' Louis Gascoigne told us that the upgrades you purchased for the weapon won't carry over into the sequel. Isaac Clarke just can't get a break, can he?

EA has announced a release date for the upcoming Dead Space Aftermath animated movie. The film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 24 in Europe, and January 25 in the US. MSRP is $34.99, but some outlets (including Amazon at the moment) are selling it for even cheaper than that already. The film will also come bundled in a double pack with 2008's animated tie-in, Dead Space Downfall. The film will supposedly serve as a prequel to Dead Space 2, about a group sent by the Government to the Aegis VII disaster from the first animated film, in order to "test" the "effects" of Marker shards. Sounds like a recipe for "trouble" (and some gory scares). Between this release next month and the demo later on this month, the Dead Space franchise is about to get a whole lot livelier.

You'd think life on a space station would be pretty neat. Pristine walkways, star-filled views and, of course, all the replicated food you can eat. Unfortunately, life on the Sprawl is about to get brutish, terrifying, and kind of gross. See what we mean in the latest trailer for Dead Space 2.

  • EA's Gibeau: Single-player game model is 'finished,' online is the future

    by

EA Games president Frank Gibeau's philosophy about the future of the games industry will probably come as a disappointment to everyone waiting on bated breath for Mirror's Edge 2: Even Edgier. Gibeau recently explained to Develop that EA is "very comfortable moving the discussion towards how we make connected gameplay – be it co-operative or multiplayer or online services – as opposed to fire-and-forget, packaged goods only, single-player, 25-hours-and you're out." He added, "I think that model is finished." This philosophy is reflected in the multiplayer-equipped Dead Space 2, which still looks great, but ... it's still kind of a bummer, isn't it? Like, that EA-published, big-budget adventure game about tax auditors we've always dreamed about? It feels like we missed our window on that one.
