Imagine our delight when we had a brown envelope from Hudson sitting on our doorstep Friday afternoon. As we opened the parcel up, we found the above items: a preview copy of Deca Sports and this sweet little wristband. Huzzah! But, woe was us for we would not be able to just play and selfishly enjoy the four available sports on the demo disc by our lonesome (or with some friends). Oh no, we have a job and have to let our readers know what we think. So that's what we did. But, we didn't just settle for playing the included sports and writing up a preview. No, instead we decided that we'd do a nice little video for you. And for all of you who enjoy reading things, we wrote up our opinions as well.So head on past the break for our hands-on look at Deca Sports for the Wii!%Gallery-7109%

  • Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 4/7-4/13

It looks like just the same old stuff for Wii sales in Japan last week. Wait a minute -- what's that, you say? Mario Kart Wii dominated Japan? Sure enough, sitting pretty at the top of the charts is Nintendo's famous kart racer, with almost half a million copies sold in its first week.Despite the Mario Kart bump, the Wii only took third place in hardware. Considering that Japanese gamers love them some handhelds, though, that's not too much of a surprise. One little observation that may floor you, on the other hand, is that Brawl was already overtaken by Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G in total sales.See it to believe it after the break.

Last week was once again all about Sony. Although Nintendo still had a good showing in the top thirty, there were only five Wii games in the software chart. Wii Fit continues to be the system's best-seller, but Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Deca Sports also made appearances in the top ten.As for hardware, the Wii once again trails behind the handhelds, but leads the pack in home consoles.Hardware: PSP: 120,964 Nintendo DS: 55,190 Wii: 44,618 PlayStation 3: 11,303 PlayStation 2: 10,423 Xbox 360: 1,452 More numbers can be seen after the break!

For the first time in a long time, the Wii is down to having only five games in Japan's top thirty. As House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return fell of the charts in its second week and Everyone's General Knowledge Training TV disappeared after having a good run, only the regulars remain.Deca Sports is the exception, being the only Wii title on the charts without either "Wii" or "Smash Bros." in its name, but even that is showing early signs of fatigue. While the game managed to nab the eighth spot and sell 29,000 copies, its Nintendo counterpart, Wii Sports, is nipping at its heels in spot twelve. This may seem insignificant, but keep in mind that Wii Sports has been out for around seventeen months, wheras Deca Sports has only been out for two weeks. In the hardware department, the Wii got a beat down from the handhelds (especially the PSP), but still continues to do better than any other console in Japan. This week, for example, the Wii sold over four times the amount of PS3s, its closest console competitor.Of course, you can just take a look at all the numbers for yourself by clicking past the break.

Hudson is being smart about the company's new sports game, Deca Sports, which will hit North American Wiis on May 13th. Since the little white console already comes bundled with Nintendo's game, the bigwigs at Hudson probably knew they couldn't price Deca Sports too highly. That's why we were pleased to hear of the title's $29.99 price tag. Just ten dollars higher and we would have been a lot more hesitant about this game, but $30 hits our sweet spot.Where's your sweet spot on this title, though? Do you still wish it cost less, or would you have payed even more to try out Hudson's sporting events?%Gallery-7109%[Via press release]

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Wii_Fanboy_interviews_Hudson_console_division_head'; As you all know, we've had our eye on Deca Sports for quite some time. It really looks like a fun compilation of sports. But, to sway any doubt about the game's excellence that we may have had lingering around in our mind, Mike Samachisa, the head of Hudson Entertainment's console division, answered some of our questions regarding the game. Why wasn't Wi-Fi support added? What made them go with this collection of sports? What sports did they have to cut? Which is better: Wii Sports or Deca Sports? Head on past the break to get a better idea for what the present and future holds for Hudson's Deca Sports game.%Gallery-7109%

Goodbye, Family Ski and Winning Eleven: Play Maker 2008 -- we hardly knew ye. While Family Ski enjoyed a seven-week run in the top thirty, Wining Eleven (aka Pro Evolution Soccer) only lasted for four. It's no coincidence that they fell off this week, though, as fifteen spots were taken up by new releases. The big Wii dog in town was not Brawl (which ended up 7th), and not even Wii Fit (which ended up 5th), but new release Deca Sports. We can't help but wonder if the appearance of Deca Sports will have an effect on that other sports game for the Wii. Is there room for both on the charts? (We think so.) And will Deca Sports have the same longevity as Wii Sports? (Probably not, but we're sure the game will do well for itself.) It's also worth noting that Deca Sports had the third highest third-party sales debut for the Wiil, following only Dragon Quest: Swords and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles.

Actually, it's two spots for Deca Sporta (Deca Sports for everyone else), fresh from Japan. As with most Japanese ads, there is quite the amount of shouting. But, that's okay, because we get to check out some gameplay. We can't be the only one impressed with the amount of different sports in this game? What we're pondering really, though, is whether or not this game will have a sport that can topple Wii Sports: Bowling as the ultimate go-to game for anyone that enjoys Wii or has had yet to experience it? Perhaps others enjoy the Wii Sports: Tennis more, but our experience has been that everyone loves Bowling, while only some have liked the Tennis.Hit up the break for the other TV spot.%Gallery-7109%

Hudson sent us an update today, letting us know more screens for their upcoming Deca Sports were available for download. Now, we would usually just toss them into our gallery, point you there and say "have fun," but these images give us a chance to try out some of our new gallery features. On top of the usual gameplay screens, they also had some character renders available. And they're huge. So, if you have a decent connection, try out the hi res and low res versions of those renders. Pretty cool how it automatically resizes, eh?Okay, maybe it isn't that great, but we're just glad that someone still knows we're alive over here at Nintendo Fanboy HQ.%Gallery-7109%

Some fresh, albeit kind of small, screens for Hudson's upcoming take on the whole Wii Sports thing, Deca Sports, have hit the net. And, we're hoping this game manages to be as fun as Wii Sports, because the overall package looks to have nothing but "win" written all over it. There's a ton of sports included in the game, some mainstream and some not so much (we can't wait to try the curling), so if you find yourself interested, hit up the gallery below for the new screens.%Gallery-7109%

Hudson's decathlon-themed, Adidastic minigame collection, Deca Sporta, was recently announced for Europe with the totally personality-free title of Sports Island. We were surprised, then, and pleased to hear that (most of) the original title will be used for the American release of the game, Deca Sports. The Wii audience has proved that they enjoy sports-based minigames, so if this is any good and is marketed at all, it could be one of the biggest games of 2008. We've updated our gallery with some new images from the game, which is due out in the summer -- the perfect time for, well, some of the featured sports. We've also posted the press release announcing the localized version after the break.%Gallery-7109%

  • Deca Sports: more minigames heading to the Wii, thanks Hudson

With the princess saved and the galaxy once again at peace, it's back to the status quo for the Wii, as Hudson has kicked off the new year by confirming plans to bring Deca Sports – a new "casual sports" title that promises to use the Wii remote in "unique yet accessible ways" – to the States this summer. The minigame comp will include ten different sporting events "for players and sports fans of all ages," which no doubt means casual gamers or those simply looking for a reason – any reason – to play the Wii.Deca Sports'' laundry list of events reads like the developers dropped a bunch of activities into a hat and pulled them out at random, with beach volleyball and archery sharing space with snowboarding, soccer, and super cross. Other events include badminton, basketball, curling and figure skating. The game even includes kart racing, making this collection, if nothing else, eclectic. Still, while this sort of offering worked great as a console pack-in, now, more than a year after the Wii first seduced us with its sultry waggle, we can't help but feel that it's time for something meatier.
