  • Diablo 3 Transmog Outfits for WoW: Deckard Cain, Leah, Witch Doctor, Barbarian

In honor of the release of Diablo III earlier this week, I've decided to dedicate my next two transmogrification articles to recreating the cast of the game. We'll start with the barbarian first -- but before we dive in, I have to tell you a quick story. I used to know a mage who wore an enchanted Chef's Hat during raids. The first day he wore it to raid, someone asked him to take it off, but he wouldn't; it was his new favorite hat and he intended to wear it. This annoyed several people in the raid, who repeatedly told him to take the hat off, so the mage told them this: "When someone does more damage than me, I will put my other helm back on." That day never came, so the hat stayed until he got bored of it. I mention this story because you'd think with all the plate bikinis and mail hot pants in WoW, the task of assembling a barbarian's costume for a warrior or paladin would be simple. Alas, loincloths don't seem to be that popular with plate wearers, so you'll either have to put on some pants or convince your raid leader that you don't need pants to do your job.

  • April Fools: Blizzard announces Blackthorne 2, Queen's Quest, Snuggie

There's really no point in writing up other April Fools' Day jokes after this one -- Blizzard pretty regularly knocks this holiday out of the park. For instance, the company's recently added mobile page has announced two new titles for cell phones: Blackthorne 2: Thorne Harder, which will feature an "epic hard rock soundtrack" and "some sort of arbitrary Twitter and Facebook integration," and Queen's Quest, an old-school text adventure starring Starcraft's Queen of Blades, which plays host to a "revolutionary Digital Rights Management (DRM) scheme." That's not all -- three new items will soon (not) be added to the Blizzard storefront: a Deckard Cain Snuggie, a Diablo 3 body pillow and a Deckard Cain GPS voice module. Also, World of Warcraft announced a new "Equipment Potency EquivalencE Number" (E-PEEN) for comparing players' weapons and armor, and a $15,000 "Battle.net Neural Interface" peripheral. See, other companies? Don't try to roll up here with your fake expansions and announcements of romance novels based on your game's protagonist. Blizzard's putting you to shame.

  • WoW Moviewatch: The Rumpus Machine

One of the mainstays at BlizzCon is the machinima contest – talented artists submit their movie ahead of the convention in hopes of winning fame and prizes. This year's BlizzCon is no different, and we're sure to see some great videos during the largest gathering of WoW players outside of Azeroth. Over the next few days let's take a look back at some of the winners and runner ups of last year's movie competition. We'll begin with the winner in last year's comedy category, The Rumpus Machine by Oblivious Films. The short film is about a Gnomish box that can do whatever it wants, thanks to some handy quantum manipulation. (Note: This movie and its acknowledgement by Blizzard proves WoW has a Heisenberg compensator built into the game. Be afraid. Be very afraid.) The box can summon dancing Blood Elves, teleport the group to Old Ironforge, and even make some Braaaains. The movie runs a little long for my tastes, but I'm sure some of you are okay with that. It has a certain Adult Swim feel to it; not terribly "lol" funny, but more humor that makes you chuckle and has a few moments of intelligent absurdity. The voice acting is good for the most part. The main Gnome character is done wonderfully, and the Dwarf fills his role. I wasn't very fond of the Human, however. He seemed bland and lacked inflection compared to the others. Regular people don't talk in a flat voice most of the time. Of course the real positive with the voice acting comes in a special appearance by Deckard Cain of Diablo fame, voiced by the original actor. That adds a lot to the film, and the dialog and plot involving him works wonders for the movie. I can see why it was selected as the winner in the comedy category for this reasons alone.

  • Mythos gets Crunched, levels 1-10

Just in case you missed it earlier this week, MMOCrunch attacked the first 10 levels of the Mythos beta and posted their main thoughts about the game so far -- which seem very positive. My own brief impressions: when people say it's similar to Diablo, they're really not exaggerating! Mythos is Diablo 2, except free, online-only, with better, brighter graphics, and most pretenses of story discarded. Plus no Deckard Cain. You could argue that's a major list of improvements, actually. If you want better images of how Mythos looks in-game, check the official site or the Massively Gallery from Akela Talamasca's first impressions of Mythos last month.Beta accounts are still flying out, so the wait is minimal if you sign up for one. Though, be warned if you're on an outdated operating system -- Mythos won't work on anything less recent than Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Vista.
