The Deus Ex: Human Defiance news teased by Eidos Montreal yesterday turned out to be an appeal for fan support for a pseudo-8-bit sequel, which uses the greatly reduced budget required for graphics to add two new cities, Montreal and Moscow. This is clearly an April Fools' Day joke – and the winky-face Facebook response makes that even clearer – but it resulted in some real news. "Deus Ex: Human Defiance" was trademarked by Square Enix Europe, and related domains were registered by CBS Films, but the developer revealed in a comment on its Facebook page that "the Human Defiance name was registered on the off-chance it we might need it, but it was decided later that it wouldn't be used." Thus, it was repurposed for this joke.

The official Deus Ex Facebook page announced a "world's first look" at Deus Ex: Human Defiance tomorrow, disclosing in the comments the property is in fact a game, and not a movie. Square Enix trademarked the name last month, but registered web domains by CBS Films pointed towards the Deus Ex film currently in production.Of course, this should be tempered by tomorrow being none other than April Fools' Day, although a false alarm for what sounds like a follow-up to Deus Ex: Human Revolution would be quite the stunt to pull. Either way, tomorrow just got a little more interesting.

Square Enix trademarked and registered domains for something called 'Deus Ex: The Fall' this week, adding to the speculation of what's up next for the franchise. Meanwhile, it's emerged Deus Ex: Human Defiance, which the publisher trademarked last week, is likely the name of the film in production; after associated domains were registered by CBS Films. In the case of Deus Ex: The Fall, however, Square Enix Europe filed both the trademark and the domain registrations. Square Enix hasn't announced a sequel to Human Revolution, while developer Eidos Montreal, who unveiled the Thief reboot this week, is working on an unannounced third project alongside the Deus Ex and Thief franchises.

Square Enix trademarked the name 'Deus Ex: Human Defiance' yesterday, suggesting a follow-up to 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Square Enix Europe filed the trademark, and the list of goods associated with it heavily indicates a game in development.Square Enix hasn't announced a sequel, and Human Revolution developer Eidos Montreal is understood to be working on an unannounced third project that's "alongside" the Deus Ex and Thief franchises. Straight Right, the Mass Effect 3 developer for Wii U, is reportedly porting a major Square Enix game to the Nintendo console, and if that's accurate Human Revolution is a contender and Human Defiance may relate to that.At this moment, however, Square Enix has kept any upcoming entries in the Deus Ex franchise as stealthily hidden as Adam Jensen in an air vent - perhaps until now, that is. We've reached out to the company for comment.Update: A company representative tells us, "Square Enix does not comment on rumor and speculation."
