Digita to build Flash-OFDM wireless broadband across Finland
Remember Flash-OFDM? Yeah, us neither. Well, it looks like the little wireless broadband standard is going to get a big push in Finland from Digita, who has just announced a nationwide network rollout. Digita is teaming up with Siemens for construction, and they've got some 450MHz frequency to work with, and are planning to launch on April 1st of 2007 with the early stages of the network covering most of Finnish Lapland and urban southern Finland. According to Digita: "The goal is to make Finland world's first country with a wireless broadband network covering the whole nation," which is a bit of a dubious claim in light of Japanese and Korean accomplishments in that realm, but 1.5mbps speeds aren't nothing to sneeze at. We're sure the Netgear folks are happy for the news.
Canon may quit film camera business
Canon, a company long associated with all kinds of photography, may become the next player to abandon the shrinking film photo business. While Canon says it has yet to make a firm decision, a spokesman said the company is considering whether it makes sense to continue producing cameras for the film market. Canon's potential withdrawal from the film business would follow a similar decision by arch-rival Nikon, which dropped production of all but one of its film cameras earlier this year. For now Canon says it will continue to support existing models, but you may just want to stock up on glass for that EOS before they change their mind.
Nokia and Digita Oy team-up to deliver DVB-H in Finland
You've heard of Nokia's DVB-H handsets (N92 to right) for months, but did you know they're also a major player behind the scenes? Nokia just inked a deal in their native Finland to supply Digita Oy with their MBS 3.0 service management platform for DVB-H mobile TV services. Nokia's MBS delivers consumer necessities such as an interface for searching services, an EPG, and the ability to set alerts for upcoming programs in addition to packing-in industry faves like OMA DRM 2.0 to protect content which can be offered within flexible pricing schemes. Digita, which already purchased those precious broadcast frequencies earlier this year, will operate the network and offer-up broadcast services to the likes of cellphone operators. Mobile TV services are expected launch later this year reaching 29% of the Finnish population by the end of 2006. So next time you hear Nokia slaggin' off DMB or Qualcomm's technically superior FLO mobile TV standards, well, now you know why. [Via Textually.org]
