From today through 5:59 p.m. EDT on Sunday, May 23, Battlefield Heroes players can input the following code to earn double the XP they normally would for playing: 5RH4-G9WR-MVV2-Q4E7. Just enter the code on this page, then it's off to the races -- er, the battlefield, rather. You've got to give it up to DICE, who has managed to keep its free-to-play shooter fresh through steady content updates -- the latest of which includes a new map and mode centered around jetpacks. And that, folks, is how you enlist over three million players. [Via Big Download]

  • See DICE's unfinshed Genesis shooter, 'Hardcore'

In 1994, before being canceled at the very last minute by publisher Psygnosis (the ailing Sony Liverpool, these days), DICE Studios was one bug squash away from completing sidescrolling shooter "Hardcore" for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis). When Psygnosis realized that the Mega Drive wouldn't be around for much longer, it canceled "13 games in an afternoon meeting," including Hardcore. As explained by DICE co-founders Andreas Axelsson and Olof Gustafsson in the YouTube video found after the break (filmed at the DATASTORM 2010 party in early February), Hardcore is currently owned by Sony and Psygnosis, and as such, DICE has been unable to release the game into the public domain (though Axelsson claims to be "working on that"). The game is said to have originally been developed with the Amiga in mind, then brought over to the Mega Drive. Axelsson and Gustafsson reveal that it was "99 percent finished" before being canceled. Given our love for sidescrolling shooters, we're hoping that Axelsson's intention to release the game publicly eventually pans out. Whaddya say, Sony/Psygnosis? How about you folks get together and work out all this legal mumbo jumbo. For us. [Via GameSetWatch]

  • Battlefield Heroes still isn't out ... so play this Flash game instead

Although EA promised the world would be in the middle of a cartoon-shaded war by now, it looks like Battlefield Heroes isn't going to hit the planned Q1 '09 release. If you're one of the unfortunate many who haven't been invited into the party, EA has a quick game that may hold you over. The official Battlefield Heroes website has released a Flash version of the game to help pass the time before the open beta begins. In the Battlefield Heroes Flash Game players have 60 seconds to shoot as many "Nationals" as they can, who each pop into frame Wack-A-Mole style and await a bullet sandwich. It isn't as sexy as playing the real game, but ... yeah, we got nothing.[Via BigDownload]

  • Mirror's Edge video gets a slower, more analytical version

This video of Mirror's Edge is the same as the one shown at SCEE's PlayStation Day, except completely different. You get a slow analysis of all the motions, the gameplay elements, and even descriptions of street signs, shoe brands, and the mystery of the game's logo revealed. It's very interesting and has a pretty cool song to go with it. Feels very Digital Devil Saga at times with slow, overdriven guitars, but then again, we're slightly insane. Check out the video -- it makes the game seem that much more interesting!

Described as an action-adventure in first-person, Mirror's Edge is the latest game from the developers of the acclaimed Battlefield series that has seen much success on the PC. The devs seem to be moving in a new direction with this latest project, as the focus of the game isn't on the shooting, but rather on the movement, a la Assassin's Creed with . The folks over at 1up got a preview with the game, and it appears well on the way to something different (and hopefully) special. The game's plot is a fairly typical futuristic affair and is in place mainly to have a good reason for the gameplay. The gameplay itself does sound good though, as it's meshes freerunning/parkour with melee style attacks and limited shooting. For now the control scheme is simple, but contextual, the sticks are typical FPS fair, but two of the face buttons control "up" and "down" motions to climb/duck or jump/slide. There is talk of a limited amount of slow-time powers, as well as wall-running, but they were in their early phases. All in all, this looks like a title to watch, and it's well worth reading the 1up impressions and checking out the gallery. %Gallery-17292%[Via 1up]

  • Digital Illusions reveal Mirror's Edge, a console-only shooter

Shooters! They're everywhere, like a hail of bullets aimed straight for your wallet. Most of them suffer from the "well, we're best on PC" virus, so getting word of a new shooter that has its crosshairs exclusively locked onto consoles is always fantastic news. Developers of the Battlefield titles, Digital Illusions, revealed a console-only (PS3 and 360) FPS titled Mirror's Edge that is supposedly going to shake up the genre. Supposedly, it's going to have a cyberpunk design to it. In anime terms, think Lain except replace all philosophical and existential mumbo jumbo with explosions. If that doesn't do it for you, then maybe the anime Texhnolyze would be a better comparison. There aren't many cyberpunk movies out there besides the Matrix. So, from Digital Illusions, we'll have Battlefield: Bad Company and the futuristic Mirror's Edge to choose from. Pick your poison, or bullet.
