Heroes. Villains. Homebrewers. Pirates. The hackers behind some of the most significant PSP security breaches to date have been called many things. A new BBC report does little to settle the ethical debate, but does demystify a pair of thorns in Sony's side.Fanjita, best known for his GTA: LCS eLoader exploit, is none other than mild-mannered David Court, a 34-year-old professional programmer who writes server software for telecommunications companies. Court, who spends an hour or so each night tinkering with his PSP, resides in Edinburgh, Scotland with his wife. He is also a martial arts enthusiast. In recent months, Fanjita's celebrity has been eclipsed by hacker Dark Alex, whose custom firmware has opened the PSP wide open. A student from Spain by day, Dark Alex derives his moniker from his real name Alejandro. He favors all things goth and finds comfort in manga and cats. "I think it is up to users to make the correct decisions about how to use my software," says Alejandro. "I believe in the presumption of innocence, unlike the media companies." [Thanks, Brian]

Being able to play homebrew on firmware 2.80 is an amazing accomplishment. However, most people that have firmware 2.80 probably don't know the very basics of running homebrew on their system. While there have been guides created in the past, a new one has popped up on the PlayStation boards. Shamoo teaches you the steps necessary to run fan-favorite DDR clone, PSP Revolution, on your system. Download the eLoader on your computer. Connect your PSP to your computer via USB. Install the eLoader. Make sure you choose this kind of installation: "TIFF, Installatron + Xloader - RECOMMENDED" Ensure the following options are checked: "TIFF, xLoader (for 2.80), Installatron, emenu" You're done installing the eLoader. Now, it's time to get homebrew programs. The full tutorial shows you how to download and install PSP Revolution on your system. It's not complicated at all--it just involves moving some folders into your PSP's GAME directory, and a few more steps. Of course, with firmware 3.0 on the horizon, what choice will you make? Stick with homebrew, or keep advancing with Sony's official upgrades?

As per tradition, Fanjita's latest PSP homebrew eLoader has been named after beer, this time 'Kriek,' a Belgian concoction brewed from fermented sour cherries. Kriek (v0.995) marks the first eLoader release for firmware 2.80 (not 2.81 or 2.82) and features xLoader, which can launch homebrew from XMB. The Install-o-tron application is also bundled with the download.Beware, Kriek is currently less stable than older eLoader versions. Use caution if and when you upgrade.[Via PSP Fanboy]

The newest version of noobz's popular eLoader, strangely called "Kriek," now supports 2.80 firmware, for those of you that upgraded, but now want to go back into the world of homebrew. This software allows you to run most new games and demos and homebrew at the same time. Another bonus for this release is the xLoader, which allows you to launch homebrew applications directly from the XMB interface. The Install-o-tron is also included so that "in principle, you may never need to manually install any homebrew ever again."Very impressive, noobz! It looks like the homebrew community is making those all-important steps to being as easy and user-friendly as possible. To download, visit noobz's site now.[Thanks, jamie!][Update 1: I guess I had too much to drink of that stuff over to the right. Yeah........ Anyways, everything should be corrected.]

While you're waiting for our Tokyo Game Show coverage to start, here's a bit of absolutely fantastic news for you to chew on. A new version of Fanjita and Ditlew's eLoader has come out today, and it now supports 2.70 and 2.71. What's an eLoader you ask? It's the application you need in order to run homebrew on your PSP. With this new eLoader, an even larger audience of PSP fans can enjoy homebrew without having to downgrade.Check it out at DCEmu.[Thanks, wraggster]See also:No GTA or downgrading needed to run homebrew

  • New PSP hack gets downgrader, e-Loader

The PSP homebrew community continues to work with blazing speed to add new features to Sony's portable. Since last week's revelation that allowed homebrew code to be run without a UMD on firmware up to version 2.8, hackers have released a firmware downgrader (that works on firmware up to version 2.71) and an e-Loader (for firmware up to version 2.6). These exploits allow PSP users to run a wide variety of tools, homebrew games and emulators on systems with more recent firmware. Be careful, though, the downgrader has been known to brick PSPs if the detailed process is not followed exactly.

PSP owners are getting even more and more choices every day. People with older PSPs could emulate newer ones. People with newer PSPs could downgrade to older ones. For those that want to have fairly new firmware for new games, and also have the ability to run homebrew on one machine without too many confusing steps now have an alternative: simply running homebrew on PSPs, up to version 2.60. Ditlew and Fanjita have released a new eLoader called "Porter" that lets you run homebrew apps on your PSP. In order to use it, you'll have to download the appropriate files, and then run it on your system before using homebrew. While this may sound complicated, it's a lot better than the previous method, which involved having a copy of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. The hard-working team of coders won't stop there. They're already working on getting PSPs 2.80 to work, and eventually... a way to run homebrew directly from the XMB without even having to use the eLoader. Wow.[Via DCEmu, Thanks craig!]
