Frontier has released its Beta 1 build of Elite: Dangerous. It "covers a greatly expanded 38,000 cubic light-year volume of Elite: Dangerous' accurately modeled Milky Way galaxy centered around the Boötes constellation." Beta 1 also introduces new features including fuel consumption, player communication, docking computers, mission system functionality, and friend management/matchmaking capability. There's more, including a new trailer, which is embedded along with the official press release after the break. [Source: Frontier press release]

In space, no one can hear you scream, but funnily enough they can hear explosions, laser blasts, and engine noise. Which is fantastic, of course, particularly in the case of the latest Elite: Dangerous trailer. The two-minute-and-44-second symphony of sci-fi destruction also features a spiffy orchestral soundtrack by composer Erasmus Talbot. In fact, the video itself was used as part of Frontier's composer selection process, while the newly minted trailer track was part of Talbot's pitch for the job. Frontier's YouTube verbiage says that the video also serves as a development tool for things like the game's GUI layout, special effects, and ship materials. Have a look -- and a listen -- after the break.

UK-based Frontier has released the first Elite: Dangerous teaser trailer as its crowdfunding project nears the two-weeks-remaining mark. Eurogamer reports that Elite needs approximately £30,000 per day for the next 15 days in order to meet its £1.25 million goal. The company has also added a PayPal option to Elite's Kickstarter page. As for the trailer, it's an atmospheric in-engine look at Elite's profession possibilities. The clip plays up the opportunity to be a trader, bounty hunter, pirate, or explorer over the course of its brief running time. View it after the cut.
