Toshiba's inaugural 3.5-inch external HDD is exactly what you think it is
Good old Tosh is putting a little more heft on its drives, unveiling what the company cites as its first ever 3.5-inch external hard drive. It spins at 5400RPM, features USB 2.0 and eSATA output, and an aesthetic that's easy on the eyes. Not much else to say about this space saver, but you can be sure it's just the first of many that are in the pipeline. The presser says it's available now, but we've been looking and have yet to find it on Toshiba's retail site or other online retailers like Amazon. Samsung Mini S2 portable HDD graced with colors that perfectly match your tacky beach gear
Sammy's done it again. The company, known to have a penchant for pink products, has unveiled two new eye-catching colors for its Mini S2 portable HDD series. Joining the already available Snow White are Ocean Blue and Sweet Pink, pictured -- and yep, if you look closely enough, that's a sea of hearts lining the case on the right. All other options appear to be the same as when Samsung first unveiled the 2.5-inch drive, with capacity options ranging from 160GB all the way up to 500GB, and it's current status is "coming soon" in Korea, with options to import likely to follow shortly after. Catering / pandering to the female audience? You betcha, and if this pic's not proof enough, hit up the break for an image that's decidedly more in line with the device's initial inspiration / concept art. [Via Engadget Spanish]
World of Warcraft hard drive by Transcend
I swear I came up with this idea yesterday -- my hard drive has been having problems with World of Warcraft, and the thought occurred to me to buy an external USB hard drive and get WoW and all of my addons loaded on it. That way, I could not only avoid the errors on my current hard drive, but I could also take my installation with me whereever I went. I wasn't sure it would work (and after a few repairs and a reinstallation, I appear to have WoW working again), so I haven't followed it up.But a company called Transcend was way ahead of me. In Asia, they're selling a hard drive preloaded with a working Wrath installation on it. So all you need to do to play Warcraft on any computer with a USB hookup is plug in and run. You'd likely have to adjust the graphics settings depending on which computer you plugged into, but it's a great idea. Available sizes run from 160gb to 500gb, so I'd assume as well that you can use the rest of the drive as normal.It looks official as well, but you never know -- it could be the The9, the company that runs Warcraft in Asia, has approved it, or Transcend could just be doing this on their own. Either way, this wouldn't be too hard to make yourself here in the states -- buy an HD, install WoW, and there you go.
New My Book external HDs from WD
I wouldn't normally post on a new external hard drive, but I have to mention that my favorite Western Digital My Book drives have just been redesigned and are shipping today (besides as Ask TUAW man it's an opportunity to remind you that you should be backing up!). I can't say that I've tested a large variety of drives, but of the external drives I've owned the My Book series has been by far the quietest, most attractive, and most reliable. Gone is the ring of light from the old models replaced by a light strip that functions as a capacity gauge. The new model comes in three models: a USB only Essential Edition, USB + FireWire + eSATA Home Edition, and an unfortunately Windows-focused Office Edition. I can't help but think one of these shiny piano black beauts would look great with one of those new Samsung printers next to a new iMac.[via electronista]
