Ubisoft has sent out a few more images of Far Cry 3 for Gamescom. The foliage exhibits a healthier, more inviting color compared to Africa, but the locals still don't like you very much. Have you tried using a less intimidating gun?

Sure, said assassins, rabbids, and future soldiers will arrive in video game form, but there's at least an air of danger in Ubisoft's Gamescom lineup. The French publisher revealed its German cavalry this week, saying that all titles will be available either in hands-on versions or hands-off presentations. From Dust (released on consoles thus far), Far Cry 3, Might & Magic Heroes VI, and Rayman Origins will be on site. Ubi will also hold a roundtable discussion titled, "Is Online Gaming Changing How We Create?" and featuring "creative leaders from Ubisoft's online teams. It'll be open to press, Ubisoft partners and the show's trade visitors. It's not necessarily bad news for you, Joe Public. While we're busy watching the roundtable, you could be jamming on some Anno 2070!

This "alternate" version of Far Cry 3's public E3 demo is the one they showed to press behind closed doors, which we previewed. It's the same opening sequence, played with less stabby-stab and more bang-bang, with zip line pew-pewing.

First and foremost, if you haven't played Far Cry 2, you're a monster. Let's just get that out of the way up front. I note as much because it's with my deep-seated love of Far Cry 2 that I approached today's hands-off presentation of Far Cry 3 ... and came away kinda worried. To be clear, the game is early. As in, "It's coming out some time next year" and that's all we know. Additionally, the demo shown off was actually just what was demoed during Ubisoft's press conference yesterday, albeit steered by Ubisoft game designer Andrea Zanini. So, given that, I haven't seen all that much more than what you saw yesterday. What troubled me, however, was the conversation I had with narrative lead Jason VandenBerghe post demo.%Gallery-125540%

Remember that Far Cry 3 trailer we were all excited about from Ubisoft's E3 2011 press conference? It turns out that, ahead of Ubisoft officially releasing it, one intrepid YouTuber has snagged it and thrown it online. Thankfully, it wasn't tied to a rock before being thrown into the internet.

Okay, okay, we've had a pretty exciting day. But Far Cry 3? That's pretty damn exciting. The game was revealed during Ubisoft's E3 press conference this afternoon, featuring a thrilling few minutes of murderous gameplay, and confirming a mess of hints that the game is in development. The gameplay demo kicked off with the game's main character being thrown down a murder well, attached to a rock, and presumed dead. Rather than simply giving in, he struggles free, only to fight through a couple dozen more lackeys on his way to hijacking a helicopter. On the way, he sneaks up and shanks a handful of bad dudes, as well as taking cover behind various bullet sponges. Frankly, it looks like fantastic madness. Beyond an amorphous 2012 release date, no other details were provided, unfortunately. Update: Ubisoft sent over the official press release on Far Cry 3, which outs the game as an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC title. It also details the game's main character, Jason Brody, and his desperate struggle for survival on a desert island gone crazy. FC3 is being developed again by Ubisoft Montreal, though this time around the studio will get some extra help from Ubisoft Shanghai and Ubisoft Massive. Head past the break for all the official details.%Gallery-125540%

  • Far Cry 3 leaps from stuntmen's resumes

Far Cry 3 has appeared on resumes, nearly three years after it was first mentioned, leading to speculation of an E3 reveal. Internet super-sleuth Superannuation points to several resumes that reference the title. The clearest indications are two stuntmen who've done motion capture work on "Far Cry 3." The last time the sequel popped up on our GPS proximity sensor was back in 2009, when one of the game's writers told OPM UK that the title was in development at Ubi Montreal. It was previously mentioned that the game would keep the African setting, but a lot can happen in three years -- you know, like several core Assassin's Creed games and spin-offs. It's worth noting that Far Cry 2 creative director Clint Hocking – tasked with reinventing the franchise following the Crytek-developed original – left the company a year ago yesterday and landed at LucasArts last August. It's unknown if Hocking was involved with Far Cry 3 at all before his departure, but we'll find out who's in charge of it now soon enough.

Kevin Shortt, master wordsmith at Ubisoft Montreal, has allegedly confirmed to Official PlayStation Magazine UK (via CVG) that Far Cry 3 is in development at the Canadian super-studio. Most of you know that we had no problem heaping copious amounts of praise upon Far Cry 2, one of our Top 10 games of 2008, so a third installment is most certainly welcome in these parts. Sadly, Shortt didn't say whether Ubisoft has decided to go with Africa again for the setting, but offered that what he's seen of the game looks "pretty exciting." So ... that's pretty exciting, right?

  • Far Cry 3 probably sticking with African setting

Far Cry 2's Narrative Designer Patrick Redding informs VG247 that Ubisoft Montreal has started work on the next Far Cry game. He tells the site that Africa still has a "huge amount of promise" and there are still things they'd like to do with the setting, but he hedges it all by saying that the team is still in "preliminary stages" of development.Redding expresses that the Far Cry 2 engine could be used to make other locales, but that to save time the team will probably build on the sequel's African setting. He wants to stick with the series' exotic settings, but feels that jungle islands aren't as exciting as when the original Far Cry released four years ago.
