In case you missed out on the UMD releases of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy 2 (or if you have a PSP Go), Square Enix is giving you the chance to get them from the comfort of your own, European hotspot. The Square Enix France Facebook page has announced that the two games will be released on the European PSN for €9.99 each -- a significant discount over what Square Enix tried to get away with for the UMD versions. Final Fantasy will be available to download next Wednesday, February 16, and Final Fantasy 2 will follow on March 2. In addition, a coupon included with Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy will reduce the price of the first Final Fantasy by half. A coupon for Final Fantasy 2 at half-price will come included with The 3rd Birthday. Square Enix hasn't announced this offer nor the downloadable releases for North America, though odds are good it won't pass up the opportunity to sell the first two Final Fantasies again.

Sure, you could play Final Fantasy XIII on PS3 and Xbox 360 this week, but you could also buy a Final Fantasy game whose quality isn't under any debate -- partly because it's really good, and partly because Final Fantasy II for SNES was released in 1991 and the debate has pretty much elapsed by now. Or you could bypass that whole Final Fantasy thing and play a cute game about a kid and his amazing drawing ability. %Gallery-86446%

  • iPhone It In: Final Fantasy I and II

I won't bother to review Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II on iPhone in terms of the content of the games. Chances are, you've encountered at least the first Final Fantasy, or at the very least you have an idea of the kind of early turn-based RPG it is. (Final Fantasy II, which never made it outside of Japan until 2002, is a bit of a different story. It's old-school, but also really weird.) The gameplay is pure NES vintage, the stories are as barebones as ever, and the graphics are identical to the recent PSP remakes. What is important to review for the iPhone port of any console game is the interface. And Final Fantasy is the rare console game that can make the transition to an iPhone control scheme intact. Not only that, the new interface is actually pleasant to interact with.

Final Fantasy I and II will finally be summoned to the iPhone this Thursday, February 25 in the UK. Both titles will be sold separately and are based on the updated PSP versions -- except with touch controls, obviously. We're currently following up with Square Enix regarding price for the two epics, as there is currently none listed. We've also requested confirmation of the North American release date, which the publisher tells us isn't official yet. Now we just keep hope alive that later Final Fantasy titles are converted for the mobile device. Update: Final Fantasy I & II are now available on the App Store for $9 apiece. [Thanks, Zach]

We're totally sold on the idea of playing Final Fantasy I and II on the iPhone -- and the gameplay-infused trailer posted above just solidifies our desire. However, as faithful as this adaptation looks, we're worried about the platform itself derailing the games' narrative. For example: You're facing off against Chaos; your four-hero outfit has been honed into a lethal fighting force; the fate of the world hangs in the balance. As your stock of HP dwindles, you summon all your strength for one last -- Text message from Eric: "yo man wat up u tryin to get drunk 2nite hit me back and let me know peace ez"

Yes, according to Square Enix's Facebook page, the iPhone will soon be the latest platform to carry the first two installations in the long-running Final Fantasy franchise. We found this to be very exciting news -- in fact, we're a little surprised Square Enix would simply abandon the announcement in the middle of the night on Facebook, placing it reticently between pictures of our estranged family members and our daily Farmville updates. Oh, well! No harm done. No details or a release window were provided in the announcement, but a few screens were delivered. Looks like the timeless "Fight, Magic, Defend, Item, Run" command menu has been replaced with a more efficient, illustrated touch menu. You've come a long, long way in 23 years, old friend. [Thanks, Isaac!]

As expected, Square Enix is continuing its roll-out of Final Fantasy classics on the PlayStation Network. In addition to Final Fantasy VII and the original Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II can now be found on the Japanese PlayStation Store. Just like before, this archived re-release is based on the PS1 version of the game and can be played on both the PS3 and PSP.At the rate that Square Enix has been releasing these games onto the PSN, we can expect the first nine Final Fantasy games as downloads before year's end. We wonder how long it'll take for Square Enix USA to announce localized versions of these downloads ...

This week, Japanese gamers will be able to download the new multiplayer Pokemon brawler (which is such a great idea!), but they'll have to pay for it. We admit to gasping a bit when we saw the 1,500-point price tag on Ransen! Pokemon Scramble, but we suspect we'll be spending that many of our American-style Wii Points soon enough. Pokemon Scramble is joined on WiiWare by a tambourine-based music game, and a cute-looking puzzle game about rotating objects to allow little creatures to move into a goal.On the Virtual Console, Square Enix delivers the second Final Fantasy game in as many months. Final Fantasy II was designed by Akitoshi Kawazu, who we just happen to have spoken to at E3! The other VC game is Wonder Momo, a cutesy side-scrolling brawler from Namco that presents itself as a stage play. We're a little embarrassed about liking it.Virtual Console Final Fantasy II (Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Wonder Momo (Arcade, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) WiiWare Fantagic Tambourine (1 player, 800 Wii Points) Anata ga Mawashite Sukuu Puzzle Mochi Mochi Q (1 player, 800 Wii Points) Melee! With a game like Final Fantasy, you don't really need to have a good advertising campaign. At least, that's what we think Square Enix is thinking with their commercial for Final Fantasy II. It appears that the same much-too-overenthusiastic woman from the first ad continues to be the series spokesperson, and this time, she's moved to tears by Final Fantasy II's epic storyline. Get her some tissues, stat! Final Fantasy II will hit America this July. %Gallery-3239%

The incredible PSP remakes of Final Fantasy I and II are heading to the Americas this June. Although they'll cost you a pretty penny ($30 each), the revamped visuals and presentation certainly are a noticeable step up from its NES roots. What? The US finally gets better box art than Japan? Final Fantasy III on Nintendo DS launched with some spectacular box art in Japan, but American gamers received boring white box art that looked worse than most Chinatown bootlegs. PSP gamers need not worry about the packaging for the upcoming Final Fantasy remakes. We're delighted to present these two glorious packages made for US audiences.Let's hope that Square Enix continues bringing us some love: we want our copies of Final Fantasy Tactics to launch with the Japanese box art. What do you think a remake of a decades-old RPG should cost? $5? $10? How about $20? Well, Square Enix has a surprise for you. The Final Fantasy remakes are heading to the US for a whopping $30 each. Final Fantasy, rated E10+, will ship to retailers on June 26, 2007. Final Fantasy II, rated T, will ship to retailers on July 24, 2007.Executive Producer Shinji Hashimoto states in the latest press release: "It is amazing to see how far Final Fantasy has come in the past twenty years, and we cannot wait to continue bringing fans more Final Fantasy titles in the next 20 years." Of course, if Square Enix continues to price games this way, gamers may not be able to afford their games. Remember the original Final Fantasy I & II collection on Game Boy Advance? Each individual UMD costs the same as that cartridge from years ago. This really is a shame, Square.Gallery: Final Fantasy I (PSP)Gallery: Final Fantasy II (PSP)

While reading Destructoid, I came across a reference to new screens for Final Fantasy II Anniversary Edition at Famitsu. While we've seen plenty of screens for Final Fantasy I, there haven't been many of II. That's some nice looking 2D up there. I especially like the look of the monster. He looks scarier than a male Sailor Moon cosplayer. Is one of these Final Fantasy titles your favorite or is your fav Final Fantasy still not announced for PSP yet?

It looks like EGM's Rumor Mill is starting to develop into truth. "Square Enix is whipping up a wild lineup for PSP this year ... These guys are serious too! I'm talking new games, remakes of old classics, and an all-new, unexpected Final Fantasy spinoff that will make the fanboys flip."Well, we can check off "remakes of old classics" off the list: Square Enix just announced their "20th Anniversary Series," which will be heading to PSP. First two games on the table? Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition and Final Fantasy II Anniversary Edition. Both games will feature the enhancements of the Nintendo-published Final Fantasy I & II Advance: Dawn of Souls, and also include new CG movies and "further enhancements."While these aren't the games we've been clamoring for, I guess it's a step in the right direction. Any support from Square Enix is better than none, right? As it stands now, I'd much rather wait for Crisis Core than these remakes of remakes. Hopefully, we'll see the rest of the "wild lineup" that EGM hinted at.[Thanks, zaki! Via The Magic Box][Update 1: Scans are available at Jeux-France.]
