Hudson's Fishing Master World Tour on Wii caught our eye, and now the game is being adapted for the DS, exchanging motion-based controls for the stylus and touch screen. As big fans of Animal Crossing: Wild World, we've enjoyed quite a bit of fishing on our DS. Although AC's fishing is a bit more on the tranquil side, Hudson's offering looks to be a bit more intense. Don't worry: Hudson presents Super X-Treme Bass Fishing sponsored by Mountain Dew this is not.Hudson's Fishing Master DS (Mezase! Tsuri Master DS) is due for release in Japan on April 23.%Gallery-43511%

At first, we weren't even sure if this was a new trailer for Fishing Master: World Tour. The first ten seconds or so are completely identical to the previous trailer in every way, from the music to the shot of the spinning globe on the captain's desk. But unlike the previous trailer, which briefly showed off the game's locations, this one demonstrates gameplay, with controller diagrams and in-game footage. And man, does it make fishing look exciting. All the flashy screen effects, anime-style character portraits popping up, and combo displays make Fishing Master look more like a fighting game than the normal waiting game. That kid totally performed a Super Combo on that boss.%Gallery-37518%[Via press release]

If Animal Crossing: City Folk has whetted your appetite for motion-based fishing, Hudson would like to remind you that they have, like, a whole game coming out about just that. A second one, in fact! Fishing Master: World Tour has a bit more in-depth fishing, as you would expect, and interesting backdrops to stare at while you're failing to catch anything. There's a longer trailer over at the official website, as well as video footage featuring each of the game's fishing venues. Keep practicing catching sea bass in Animal Crossing (or the first Fishing Master, we guess), and maybe you'll be able to hit the leaderboards when World Tour.%Gallery-37518%

  • E308: Hudson USA reels in two fish games [update]

This week, Hudson Soft announced two new games for North American Wiis, both with distinctly aquatic themes, though viewed from fairly different perspectives. The Fishing Master sequel, Mezase!! Tsuri Master Sekai ni Challenge!, is coming out this winter in Q1 2009 under the title Fishing Master World Tour. The controls have been made a bit more representative than in the previous title (there's less holding of buttons and more just motion), and the backdrops now include exotic locations around the world. Like one might see on a tour of the world. It's also got boss battles and leaderboards. I played it briefly at E3 and found it pretty easy to operate (but really hard to successfully entice a fish in).The other nautical game takes place underwater, and in much smaller bodies of water. The WiiWare aquarium thing Blue Oasis will be released at an undetermined time under the title My Aquarium. The official North American website launched this week.[Update: the release date for Fishing Master was apparently in error.]

Just a few short days ago, we "predicted" (by reading Hudson's web site) that a sequel to Fishing Master would be on the way soon. It turns out we're totally psychic (that's what it is when you can predict the present, right?), as the first screens of Fishing Master: World Challenge have been revealed. World Challenge takes players on a boat tour around the world. You'll get to see some of the most beautiful and distinctive landmarks of the world -- in the distance, as you sit by a nearby body of water and fish! There will be over 200 varieties of fish, although most of them will fit into the category of "fish you almost caught."

A new listing on Hudson's website reveals a planned Japanese release of Mezase!! Tsuri Master Sekai ni Challenge!, which translates to Fishing Master World Challenge. This could mean that the sequel to Fishing Master challenges the player to hook the entire globe with his fishing line, reeling it in impossibly (and dunking himself in the process), or it could mean that you fish in a bunch of different locations. According to the page, Fishing Master 2 will be released in Japan in July. No U.S. release has been announced yet. The first Fishing Master game got middling reviews, but did come out at $30 in the U.S., to its credit.[Via NeoGAF]

  • Joystiq hands-on: Fishing Master (Wii)

I grew up fishing and still sometimes make it out on to a lake, river, or ocean to try to hook a meal. I attended Camp Fish. I know how to cut a herring so that it rolls in tune with a salmon's appetite. And I've been waiting for a good Wii fishing simulation, an obvious game idea, given the rod-like Remote. Fishing Master is not that simulation.Instead, Fishing Master is a more casual title that glosses over many parts of real fishing technique. Real fish are attracted to different colors of bait depending on the weather conditions, but Fishing Master has seasons and no other weather patterns. Rod position plays the most important role in keeping a fish on, but like most fishing games, Fishing Master uses the reeling-too-hard-or-not-hard-enough-meter to decide if a fish gets away. But I understand these design decisions and still had fun with a recent version of the game. With its projected September U.S. release from the recent Japan-only launch, casual anglers and gamers may be hooked.

At a designed-to-be-informal blogger get together today, Hudson announced the Japan-only Wii game, Fishing Master, will be localized and released in the U.S. later this year. The game isn't the fishing simulation real-world anglers have been hoping for, but its waggling controls may still appeal in-part to those players. Instead, Fishing Master is a decidedly Japanese game -- your dog barks to help identify strikes -- that hopes to find an international audience of casual players. All other Japanese features, like the kinds of bait, types of fish, and locations based on prefectures, will remain intact for the rest of us. Hudson hopes to ship the game in September. Stay tuned for our hands-on impressions of the game.
