  • New games this week: Orange Box edition

See, these are the weeks that picking the top release is easy. The Orange Box looks to be one of the best games of the year, but, more importantly, it looks to be one of the best gaming values. And we're all about the value here on Joystiq. We'd clip coupons, if our hands weren't already horribly misshapen and arthritis-ridden from decades of clipping coupons. Yeah ... we're pretty hardcore. PS3 is getting an interesting release too, with Folklore. Check out all the releases after the break.%Gallery-1634%

Happy Folklore week! Sure, Japan has had it for a couple of months now but since then we've been waiting patiently for the localisation process to be completed. This week our waiting pays off. But Folklore isn't the only big hitter to be released this week. Here's the full release list:US Games FIFA 08 Folklore Sega Rally Revo European Games Skate NBA 08 Folklore Asian Games NBA Live 08 Rise From Lair The Godfather: The Don's edition Not a bad haul. We're really pleased to see that Folklore is being released in the same week in Europe and America. We're also happy to see Skate finally get its PS3 release over in Europe. As for Asia, we're intrigued to see how well Lair (named Rise From Lair over there) sells, considering its critical acclaim. Don't forget, if there's a game on the list that looks interesting to you then feel free to order it, regardless of territory. Your PS3 loves games from other regions. Release dates are subject to constant change, so make sure you check with your local store before venturing out of the house.

  • Sony wants you to design a Folklore character

It's not too often gamers are afforded the opportunity to have a direct impact on a video game ... like actually getting to create a character, but once again, Sony's giving you that very chance in the Create a Folk contest for Folklore. Currently, there are more than 100 Folks in Folklore, but Sony needs just one more.Developer Game Republic will turn the winner's artwork into an in-game character that will be downloadable from the PlayStation Store. Even more exciting is that entries will be judged by a panel that includes Yoshiki Okamoto of Resident Evil and Devil May Cry fame. The competition just kicked off and will run through Oct. 22. To create an entry, you must provide an illustration of your character, his name, a detailed description and a unique attack the player can absorb from him. You can post entries here or e-mail them here.[Thanks, Kspraydad]

Click for high-resolution image. Here it is, the US box art for the upcoming PS3 adventure game, Folklore. It does a great job of giving players a glance at both main characters, Keats and Ellen, and a handful of the Folks they'll collect in the game. The US version of the game will be available October 9th.

  • A triumviate of Folklore vids for your pleasure

Because there are three videos for you to watch today, we've got two hidden after the jump in addition to the Cernunnos Battle video we've slapped above. The other two videos are, respectively, the Faery Lord text adventure and a video on capturing Ids. If you've gotten all the videos from the PS Store and still want to watch these, you might just be looking forward to this game. We are, too, so don't feel bad about that. This is probably the only game Sony has pushed this hard -- it's already got multiple videos, multiple demos, and downloadable packs in the pipeline. They must think it's something special, but we have to ask, do you?

  • Amazon will not honour "incorrect prices" on Lair and Folklore orders

    by

    08.30.2007

What started out as a simple deal of the day has turned into an ugly battle between Amazon and some of its customers. Lair and Folklore were listed for £14.95 each, an incredible deal by anyone's standards. Because of this, both games shot to the top of the Amazon bestseller's list for Video Games. Some of our more paranoid commenters emailed Amazon about whether the price was correct and whether they would honour it if it turned out to be an error. At least one person apparently got an email stating that the prices were correct and that they should expect no price change. As the old saying goes, "just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you." Amazon yesterday started sending out emails stating that people's Lair and Folklore orders had been cancelled due to a pricing mistake. It seems weird to us that two games were priced wrongly for exactly the same amount of time and at exactly the same price. What are your thoughts?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Deal of Yesterday: Lair and Folklore back at full price at Amazon

    08.28.2007

Amazon's amazing deal on Lair and Folklore yesterday seems to have unceremoniously come to an end. The price for each game has risen to £34.99, more than double the "sale" price. Was it a sale though? We're not sure. It didn't take long for both games to hit the number 1 and number 2 spot on the bestsellers list for Video Games. We're sure Amazon themselves would have noticed the amount of attention the games were getting if it was a mistake. We don't know whether yesterday's prices will be honoured for those that pre-ordered the games, but are looking into it. If you've been in contact with Amazon about it, please let us know.

  • Deal of the Day: Lair and Folklore for 15 each at Amazon

    08.27.2007

Despite there being no retail releases in Europe this week, Amazon are keeping people happy with two potentially great games available for £15 each. Lair and Folklore have both received the less-than-half-price treatment and are now firmly at the top of the bestsellers list for Video Games. This seemingly random deal has no explanation attached, nor an indication of when it might end. So if you fancy getting two PS3 exclusives for this incredibly cheap price, then do it now. Both titles promise to be excellent fun and we've thoroughly enjoyed our hands on time with both of them. The only problem now is, do you import Lair and pay full price, but get it a month early? Or order it from Amazon for less than half price and wait until mid October? Decisions, decisions ...[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Nope, still no Everyday Shooter. Instead, this week's PSN update is bloated with video content, including a preview of Metal Gear Solid 4's beastly bosses (RAGE!!) and another installment of the Heavenly Sword anime ad (building hype for a game that one early review seems to suggest is just that, hype). And, if you didn't lift it from the Japanese Store months ago, an expanded localized version of the Folklore demo (still without voice-overs 'cept in FMVs) is also available: Folklore "Sneak Preview" demo Heavenly Sword "Making of" No. 3 Heavenly Sword Anime No. 3 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots "Beast Corp" trailer Haze trailer TimeShift trailer Movie trailers: Things we Lost in the Fire, Vantage Point, National Treasure: Book of Secrets [Via press release]%Gallery-3178%

We've updated our Folklore gallery with a load more images that really show off the great art style of this game. For those of you who don't find screenshots too exciting, take a look regardless. Monster designs, concept art and the final boxart are included. Just six of the game's monster designs are shown below, but rest assured that all 100+ are as creepy as stylish as the ones you see here. We have some more interesting information about this title that we gleaned from our time at 3Rooms yesterday. Here they are in handy bullet point form. 100+ monsters to catch and abilities to learn The game takes advantage of the internet by allowing user created dungeons, online leaderboards and Quest Packs The game includes seven different regions (read: levels): Hell Realm, Faery Realm, Warcadia, Endless Corridor, Netherworld Cave, Undersea City Ellen's costumes each correspond to one of the above regions You can start the game as either Ellen or Keats. You then play as that character for five chapters, before being able to switch between them at will during the final two chapters. %Gallery-3196%

  • Folklore will get some life on the PSP

If you were upset because you wouldn't be able to collect the monsters from Folklore on the PS3, fear not! Sony has confirmed a PSP version of the title is in the works. The game probably won't be exactly the same (graphically obvious, plotline will also probably differ), but the interesting thing to note is the involvement of Kouji Okada. You may know Okada as the creator of the always-critically-acclaimed Shin Megami Tensei titles. What does this mean? You're going to get a badass PSP game. While our speculation leads us to believe this PSP title will be set in the same universe but tell a different story, there's nothing to confirm that. Sony has remained quiet on the issue. We aren't even aware of any link-up between the PSP and PS3 game for extra content, monsters, etc. Even if there is none, we know the title will be worthy of following up on, so expect to hear more in the coming weeks!

  • Six quest packs planned for Folklore

During the Folklore presentation by the game's designer Yoshiki Okamoto at Sony's PR space, 3Rooms, some details on planned downloadable content were shown. Six download packs, or "Quest Packs", have been planned. Each pack will contain the following: 4 new quests 1 new costume 1 new monster At the moment there is something that looks suspiciously like the first Quest Pack on the Japanese PSN Store. It weighs in at about 24MB and is downloadable for free. We obviously love the idea of these packs being free. Unlike some downloadable content. We also caught a glimpse of the concept designs for Ellen's costumes and they look great. There's one for each of the seven areas of the game, with an extra one being added with each of the six Quest Packs.

  • Wednesday to bring new content, Folklore demo to the EU PSN

PS3 Fanboy's trip to Sony alcove 3Rooms today wasn't all waving of hands and flipping of cards, they also managed to walk away with the news that the EU PlayStation Store would be getting a hearty update on Wednesday. The new content (including several trailers) will arrive in conjunction with Sony's press conference from Leipzig and will be topped off with a new demo for Folklore, the upcoming action-adventure set in a small Irish village.Sony told the PS3 Fanboy gang that the demo will be coming to the US soon, they're just not sure exactly when. Europeans will want to act fast, though, because the demo will only be available for a limited time before it disappears again into the mist. (If you're wondering, this would, in fact, be a perfect place for a Brigadoon reference. Unfortunately, that's set in Scotland. We know, we were disappointed too.)

  • EU PSN update due on Wednesday; Folklore demo included

The EU PSN store is in a sorry state, wouldn't you say? Don't worry, we've already said it for you. Don't worry though, while we were at Sony's 3Rooms today, we were told that Wednesday night will see a large update straight from Leipzig. Why Wednesday? Because that's when the Sony Press Conference is, of course. The update will contain lots of trailers from the show as well as an English language Folklore demo. Don't go being tardy about downloading it, however. The demo will only be available for a limited time before being pulled down again. We're not entirely sure why, but we're warning you regardless. If you didn't play the Japanese demo (or if you did and got stuck, what with it being in Japanese and all) then get it downloaded. Folklore is unique in its aesthetic style as well as its gameplay and has been shamefully overlooked. It's like playing a Japanese Tim Burton film.

If you haven't been exposed to much Folklore, this trailer should give you a nice overview of the game's look and feel, as well as an opportunity to meet the two main protagonists: Ellen, a girl who's searching for her mother and Keats, a journalist who's (wait for it) ... searching for the truth. After watching the trailer, we're sure you're curious if all writers are like Keats, but, of course, they are not. Here at Joystiq, for instance, our coats are much longer than that and our accents are much thicker ... and sexier. Also, when we transform into a pale man-beast, we have to leave our glasses on, because our astigmatism is much worse.

While we wait for the Folklore demo to hit US shores, it appears that 1UP has net an exclusive trailer for this upcoming PS3 action adventure. As we mentioned at E3, the game revolves around controlling two different characters as they travel back and forth from the Faery World. After watching this new trailer, do you share the same excitement as one unnamed British blogger?
