Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn earns Emmy nomination
Halo 4 live-action web-series Forward Unto Dawn is up for an Emmy - no, not a tech Emmy, the real primetime deal. It's going up against the likes of HBO's The Newsroom and CBS' Elementary for this year's Main Title Design honor. The Main Title Design category rewards work that goes into title sequences, so we should doff our cap towards German 3D animator Polynoid, who collaborated with Halo 4 dev 343 industries on the intros for the five Forward Unto Dawn episodes. Machinima and Microsoft first released the series on YouTube last year, leading into the launch of Halo 4, before bringing it to Blu-ray and Netflix. If you've not seen it and you've got 90 or so minutes to spare, we'd say it's worth the watch, and not just for the titles. As for the Emmy, the winner will be revealed at this year's ceremony on September 22.
Forward Unto Dawn and staying true to Halo
You might think that the biggest challenge in creating Halo 4's Forward Unto Dawn series was translating one of gaming's most beloved franchises into a live-action film that was not only true to the source material, but also worth watching. You'd be right, of course, but for fans the biggest challenge was in making sure Master Chief sounded right.During the Forward Unto Dawn postmortem at GDC, 343 Industries franchise development director Frank O'Connor noted that the casting of Master Chief was "a source of much consternation" for series fans. "We did a couple of tests using the actor who plays Master Chief in the game, and he's an older guy," said O'Connor. The ending of Forward Unto Dawn reveals that the superhuman Spartan soldiers are just as young as the film's UNSC cadets, so giving Master Chief the gravelly voice we all know and love would be out of place. "He can't sound like he's 50," said O'Connor, "and so we had to find a young actor whose voice sounded like his voice might eventually grow into the Chief's."
Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn DVD/Blu-ray bundle coming to Europe
A region two Blu-ray / DVD combo of the Halo 4 miniseries Forward Unto Dawn has been spotted on Amazon UK. In addition to Blu-ray and DVD copies of the film, the deluxe edition will also feature several extras, including a poster, art cards and over 100 minutes of bonus content. The Forward Unto Dawn Deluxe Edition is slated for a May 27 release in Europe. Amazon UK currently has it listed for 18.70 ($27.80). We've contacted Microsoft to find out if the set will also be released in North America.
Final Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn vignette debuts squad
The final installment of the Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn vignette series debuts the Hastati squad from the Corbulo Academy of Military Science, which fight for a cause they don't seem to believe in. The live-action mini-series kicks off on Halo Waypoint and Machinima Prime on October 5.
Halo 4 'Forward Unto Dawn' vignette takes us on Joyride
What would you do if you had a real Warthog, Halo's iconic vehicle of choice? The answer for most of us should be pretty obvious: whatever you could get away with. Fishtails, donuts, you name it. Just hope your CO isn't watching.
Latest Halo 4 'Forward Unto Dawn' episode waxes philosophical about cryo-sleep
If we've taken anything away from the latest Halo 4 "Forward Unto Dawn" short above, its that being an enlistee at Corbulo Academy means two things. First, students are apparently locked into their rooms at lights out like some kind of military prison barracks, and secondly, cryo-sleep is both commonplace and, apparently, terrifying. Most sleepers report having strange dreams during cryo, but not the blonde in today's short. "For me, it's like dying," she says, "and then waking up again. Sweet dreams." At that moment, Master Chief and a human version of Cortana (given life and physical form by 282 Reality Circuit) burst through the ceiling and tell our young heroes that they're needed, and time is short.... Okay maybe we made up that last part, but wouldn't that have been awesome?
Move further 'Unto Dawn' with the latest Halo 4 live-action short
The latest Halo 4 short – sans Master Chief, but with a whole bunch of tough-looking dudes no less – focuses on the psychology of UNSC rookie troopers. Not just any UNSC troopers, but the ones we'll be getting up close and personal with when 343 Industries and Microsoft Studios finally drop the full live-action "Forward Unto Dawn" video prequel to Halo 4.And yes, the Chief will also be part of that. Quit worrying.
Behind-the-visor of Forward Unto Dawn's Warthog scene
Our first taste of Halo 4's live-action tie-in Forward Unto Dawn gave us a glimpse at what to expect from the live-action series, but a behind-the-scenes trailer issued today promises that we'll eventually see one epic Warthog action sequence.
You can almost see Master Chief in this Halo 4 live action teaser
The Chief is in there, no doubt, but Halo 4's "Forward Unto Dawn" live action marketing campaign has yet to really kick off. As such, the teaser above offers little more than a brief glimpse at Master Chief's super tall, super armored silhouette.
