GameTap adds a pair of dark tales this week for subscribers. American McGee's Grimm keeps "improving" childhood classics with the addition of The Devil and His Three Golden Hairs (remember, it's free to everyone for the first 24 hours). Also, the dynamic duo of Kane & Lynch get all violent up in the joint. Grimm: The Devil and His Three Golden Hairs (Windows) - Much like Harry Potter, it just keeps getting darker. Kane & Lynch: Dead Men (Windows) - You think we're going to put some Gerstmann-gate crack in here, don't you? Well, we're not! We aren't going to mention it at all. Once again, there aren't any additions to GameTap's free games list this week. The full list of free-to-play titles can be found after the break.

American McGee's Grimm continues on GameTap this week with The Girl Without Hands -- yup, it's getting darker. Same as every week, the episode is free to non-subscribers for the first 24 hours after release. The service also gets into the drug trade by adding the addictive Puzzle Quest. Grimm: The Girl Without Hands (Windows) - Katamari Grimm-acy do your thing! Puzzle Quest: Challenge of Warlords (Windows) - It's time to finally play this game if you've somehow missed out on it. There aren't any additions to GameTap's gratis games lineup this week, but the full list of free-to-play titles can be found after the break.

    08.21.2008

This week American McGee's Grimm retells the story (in Grimm's special way) of the anthropomorphic Puss in Boots. The episode is free for everyone the first 24 hours after release and will be available only to GameTap subscribers after that time. Grimm: Puss In Boots (Windows) - Cats are evil and Puss is no exception. Dogs rule! Patrician III (Windows) - How to describe ... how to describe? Oh, it's like playing "Medieval Tycoon." There are no new additions to GameTap's free games lineup this week. As always, though, the full list of free-to-play titles can be found after the break.

    08.14.2008

Katamari Grimm-acy rolls on this week as American McGee's Grimm tells the tale of The Fisherman and His Wife. Remember each episode is available for free to all for the first 24 hours after release, after which it becomes available to GameTap subscribers only. Grimm: The Fisherman and His Wife (Windows) - Greedy wife is bound to get what she deserves! Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones (Windows) - The final chapter in the Sands of Time trilogy brings back some of the first game's charm and cuts out a lot of the second title's emo. There are no new additions to GameTap's free games lineup this week. If you still haven't tried the first episode of Grimm, it's available to play for free and doesn't require a huge time commitment.

    08.07.2008

Despite some awkward news today that parent company Turner is trying to unload GameTap, the show must go on. With that said, American McGee's Grimm adds a new episode this week, Little Red Riding Hood, which will be available to everyone -- not just subscribers -- for the first 24 hours after release. Grimm (Windows) - The ornery dwarf meets the naïve girl in the red coat. There are no new additions to GameTap's free games lineup this week. There should still be plenty of goodies on there to try for the freeloaders.

    07.31.2008

This week's GameTap update un-Disney-fies fairy tales with the addition of American McGee's Grimm. Play as the crude title character in the first set of eight episodes over the coming weeks (schedule posted after the break). The game buffet also adds one other title for subscribers this week. Remember, the first episode of Grimm is free to play for all and all future episodes are free for the first 24 hours after release. Grimm (Windows) - One angry dwarf is bringing everything back to basics. Alien Stars (Windows) - A top-down shmup. So, pew, pew-pew, pew, pew-pew-pew, away. Grimm is this week's addition to the GameTap gratis lineup. The full list of free ad-supported titles on the service can be found after the break.

All you need to know about this week's GameTap update is encapsulated in one word: Fallout. There, we've said our bit. No word yet when Fallout 2 will make it onto the smorgasbord. Fallout (Windows) - "A post nuclear role playing game." Aveyond 2 (Windows) - A relatively new RPG that looks like an old-school Squaresoft game. Battle Chess (Windows) - Play chess, but watch the pieces on the board beat the pixels out of each other. Oh, how we long for an HD remake of this game. Knights of the Round gets added to GameTap's selection of gratis games this week. The full list of free ad-supported titles from the service can be found after the break.

The feel-good post-nuclear-apocalypse game about finding a Water Chip, Fallout, joins GameTap this Thursday. There are still no details about when Fallout 2 will make an appearance on the service, but when GameTap originally announced Fallout was coming, the company did say it would be adding the "series." For those with some patience, the original Fallout should be available on GameTap's free service at some point in the future.[Thanks Joshua]

    07.10.2008

This week GameTap adds some new titles that might be worth trying after you've gotten through the last few weeks of excellent additions to the service. Aveyond (Windows) - The sequel to this RPG, Aveyond 2: Ean's Quest, will join the service in two weeks. ClayFighter (Windows) - The ubiquitous fighter genre in the '90s took a considerably strange turn with the addition of this title. Once again, GameTap doesn't add any new free games this week, but there's still plenty to check out in the list after the break.

    07.03.2008

As we slowly prepare for the long weekend here in the States, hunkering down for some game playing with a grill right next to us, it's probably worth mentioning that GameTap's selection of free games (which we've listed after the break) won't cost you a dime or, more importantly, gas money getting to the mall. All that cash can be spent on some extra meat for the barbecue. But first, let's look at the new subscription games this week. Descent: Freespace (Windows) - If you liked Wing Commander: Prophecy and miss that whole space pilot genre, definitely check out Freespace. Off-road Redneck Racing (Windows) - Oh boy, do we have to write something here? Umm, Rednecks go racing ... it's slightly less offensive than Redneck Rampage. GameTap's free games list doesn't get any new additions this week, but if you haven't played Tomb Raider: Legend or Deus Ex, what are you waiting for?

    06.26.2008

Some more Interplay titles return to GameTap this week, but the really nice addition is that of Civilization IV's expansion, Warlords. It added several new elements to the excellent turn-based strategy game, like the Great General unit, vassal states and unique buildings for each nation. Civilization IV: Warlords (Windows) - The expansion to Civ IV. There are also several scenarios in Warlords to try out if you're not looking for the full-blown world conquering experience. Descent 3 (Windows) - Shoot everything in 360 degrees of blasting awesomeness (for a third time). American Deer Hunting (Windows) - PETA will thank you for playing this game instead of being a real man and killing yourself a big ol' buck. GameTap's free games list gets several new additions this week. We've placed the full list after the break and bolded the new titles for easy reference.

  • GameTap Thursday: MDK, Cosmic Osmo and Descent II

    06.19.2008

The Interplay titles keep returning to GameTap as Descent II and MDK rejoin the service. We know that everyone's waiting for Fallout, but MDK is a pretty sweet game. Of course, the whole reason for playing it is to see the bizarre music video at the end of the game, which even today is still fantastically jarring. Cosmic Osmo (Windows) - There's some vague memory of having played this on a Mac way back in the day. Descent II (Windows) - Shoot everything in 360 degrees of blasting awesomeness. MDK (Windows) - If you can cope with the weirdness, there's a fun third-person shooter in there. This week GameTap's list of free games welcomes Dracula Twins (never invite a vampire in!) and Five Card Deluxe. We also received an image from GameTap with the release schedule for the company's upcoming original game Grimm. We've placed the free games list and the Grimm release image after the break.

    06.12.2008

After re-acquiring the rights to many Interplay titles last month, GameTap welcomes the return of several Earthworm Jim games with this week's update. Other titles expected in the future from the Interplay deal are MDK and Fallout. Earthworm Jim (Genesis) - An invertebrate finds a special suit -- action ensues. Earthworm Jim 2 (Genesis) - Bigger, badder and wormier than the original. Earthworm Jim 3D (Windows) - The transition to 3D was not kind on the hero. Earthwo ... Sacred Gold - A Baldur's Gate/Diablo-style game that stood out from the glut of clones based on the aforementioned titles. GameTap's list of free games can be found after the break. This week, arcade classic Burger Time joins the lineup. If you've never played, you'll never turn your back on eggs or sausage again without fearing it's trying to kill you.

    06.05.2008

GameTap's big news this week was that Fallout would be showing up sometime in the near future, but that future isn't now. This week's new additions for gold members are a pretty standard puzzle game and shoot 'em up; however, freeloaders should take full advantage of Deus Ex joining GameTap's gratis lineup. Astro Fury (Windows) - Arcade style top-down shoot 'em up with vibrant colors. Cradle of Rome (Windows) - A puzzle game. Due to an overzealous spam filter or something, we didn't receive the updated list of free titles for the service this upcoming week, and therefore can't place the list after the break. For now, feel free to browse through the free section of GameTap's site and we'll add our list as soon as we get it.Update: This week's free games list can now be found after the break.

  • GameTap Thursday: Tortuga Pirates in the Ducati World Championship

    05.29.2008

We take a moment this week in our GameTap Thursday post to remember the men and women who made up the editorial team over at the service. Their employment was cut tragically short this week due to shortsighted management decisions. So, we raise a glass to our fellow scribes and toast to the words of Eddie Valiant, "Here's to the pencil pushers. May they all get lead poisoning." Ducati World Championship (Windows) - It's sort of, but totally not, like Gran Turismo with bikes. Tortuga Pirates of the New World (Windows) - Pirates! or Tropico are much better games. If you're really looking for something different to play (and probably learn), Brian Lara Cricket 2007 joins GameTap's free lineup this week.

    05.22.2008

Let's just focus on the good GameTap news from yesterday that Interplay and Take-Two have made new deals with the service. This week's new titles sure do show that the online buffet could really use an adrenaline shot to the heart for the weekly updates. Of course, it's unfair to look at things that way, considering if we take the whole library into account there's plenty of options to last us from now until the Zombie Apocalypse. It's coming ... just wait. Dangerous Waters (Windows) - Hardcore submarine simulator. The Chosen (Windows) - A budget title Diablo II clone. Metal Slug 2 joins the gratis GameTap lineup listed after the break.

  • GameTap Thursday: Playing Five Card Deluxe at Outpost Kaloki

    05.15.2008

GameTap does a little better than last week with the addition of Outpost Kaloki to the subscription lineup. With Kaloki's addition, this is a good time to mention GameTap's indies section, where subscribers can peruse all the games which don't come from big evil publishers keeping the little man down. Yeah, like, la vie boheme, man. Five Card Deluxe (Windows) - Poker-themed solitaire. Sure, it sounds lonely, but isn't it supposed to be? Outpost Kaloki (Windows) - A "tycoon" game where players create a space station to stand the test of time and keep aliens happy. GameTap's list of free games can be found after the break. The Battle of Europe flight-sim joins the free lineup this week for your Luftwaffe-destroying pleasure.

    05.08.2008

Um, so, this week GameTap doesn't necessarily scrape the bottom of the barrel, but sort of skims the goo that's formed atop the stagnant water over the weeks. Really nothing to see here, but if we want to get optimistic, the good news is Deus Ex will be added to the service next week. Alpha Prime (Windows) - A first-person shooter we've never heard of, but reviewers didn't like it much. Chameleon Games (Windows) - A Zuma clone. Flip Words 2 (Windows) A casual game where you make words. GameTap's list of free games can be found after the break. This week adds Morning's Wrath ... a Diablo clone. This week is just painful all around.Update: It's true, Deus Ex has been on the service for a while. That link he have in the first paragraph definitely went to an announcement that the game was being added next week (you can even tell by the pull-quote used on the GameTap page). Ninjas have swooped in and made changes.

    04.24.2008

GameTap goes on an intergalactic mission this week with space-smuggler sim Darkstar One. The service also adds another title which, at first glance, may confuse a few people into thinking it's a completely different game. Darkstar One (Windows) - A semi-precious gem from a couple years ago that's inspired by the great space-sim shooters of the '90s and doesn't take itself too seriously in the commerce department. Great Journey (Windows) - No, it's not The Longest Journey ... not by the longest shot. It's actually an E-rated game about stopping polluters in Antarctica. Get ready to hadouken as GameTap's free games adds Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers this week. Find the full free games list, presented in Chun-Li Thunder-Thigh-O-Vision, after the break (Thunder-Thigh-O-Vision may not be available on some browsers).

  • GameTap Thursday: Dracula Twins tend to a Dark Matter with Alien Shooter Vengeance

    04.17.2008

This week, GameTap adds some titles from the land of random to its service following last week's Sam & Max season two finale. Alien Shooter Vengeance (Windows) - Shoot everything that moves. Dark Matter (Windows) - Shoot everything that moves some more. Dracula Twins (Windows) - Shoot everything that moves ... sorry, was getting into a rhythm. Play as Drac's kids and save the old man from some obnoxious vampire hunters. Added to the list of GameTap's free games this week is X2: The Threat, a space trading and combat sim which has absolutely nothing to do with the X-Men whatsoever. The full list of free games can be found after the break.
