APB's Dave Jones said he expected mediocre reviews from the media immediately after launch. Be that as it may, the Realtime Worlds team obviously feels that the game is a success, according to today's press release. The press release announced that the APB staff will increase, and Realtime Worlds will actually be pulling resources from an unnamed second project as well in order to give full support to APB. This will mean 24/7 live support, more content updates, and generally a more active future for the game. CEO Gary Dale explained that the decision is a reflection of the game's successful launch and Realtime's expectation of continued success in the future: "APB experienced a very smooth launch for an online dedicated game along with a great reception from consumers and we're immensely proud of the game the team has produced. We now have to focus our efforts and resources on running APB as a 24/7 online live operation, creating new content and services for the future and ensuring the best possible experience for the players." Check out the press release for all the details.

Only one week out from the game's official release, APB development house Realtime Worlds confirmed today (via Develop) that "a small number of staff will be made redundant, and a second unnamed project will be downscaled." Oddly enough, the studio also announced that it's still hiring. Rather than commenting on specifics of the layoffs, Realtime CEO Gary Dale noted: "We now have to focus our efforts and resources on running APB as a 24 / 7 online live operations, creating new content and services for the future and ensuring the best possible experience for players." Dale also assured that the restructuring doesn't have to do with the reception of the new MMO at retail, saying, "APB experienced a very smooth launch for an online dedicated game along with a great reception from consumers and we're immensely proud of the game the team has produced." We've followed up with RTW for more specifics, and we'd like to offer our consolences to anyone at the studio that lost their job.

If you're chomping at the bit for some virtual crime, we're here to let you know that the wait to get your fix is almost over: Realtime Worlds CEO Gary Dale confirmed (via GI.biz) that a beta for the PC version of APB is currently on the docket for next week -- a beta which Realtime Worlds began taking applications for mid-August. If you haven't yet applied to be in the beta, you should probably get on that. Not sure if you're interested? Did you know the game is part GTA, part San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing?

All Points Bulletin from Realtime Worlds is eagerly anticipated by the GTA and Saints Row set, bringing much greater online interaction to the urban crime game genre. All Points Bulletin has been accepting beta applications and, according to Gamesindustry.biz, the beta will begin next week. They report that Realtime Worlds CEO Gary Dale mentioned the beta going live during Tech Media Invest 2009 in London. If all goes as planned, this is certainly good news for those of you who applied as beta testers. APB video podcast 10 is also out, and shows us a continuation of the GamesCom 2009 footage from last month. In fact, this video quite literally picks up where the previous footage left off, showing off a bit of the Last.fm integration into All Points Bulletin, and how the unobtrusive heads-up display guides you to mission locations. We've got an HD embed of the video for you, so stick with us past the jump for a closer look at APB's gameplay.

  • Missing the memo: Realtime Worlds hiring

Realtime Worlds plans to hire another 50 staff by early 2010 and has already taken out an additional 8,000 square feet of space to accommodate. CEO Gary Dale says the team has been energized by the "countless plaudits" (what is that, a sparkly button?) it received for APB during E3.Realtime's vocal need for talent probably has a little something to do with the fact that it's in a talent acquisition race with the neighbors at Ruffian Games, who are currently working on Crackdown 2. As we recently learned, the Scotland-based studios are skimming talent from a relatively shallow pool.

Realtime Worlds put out an APB (get it, like the game it's making?) for a new CEO and now Gary Dale has answered the call. If Dale's name is familiar to you, it's likely thanks to his previous job: Chief operating officer of Take-Two, though he also served as the European managing director of Capcom. We'd like to humbly suggest that Dale's first official act should be putting higher-res pictures of himself on the internet for bloggers to put funny captions on when they write about him. Ask Mike Gallagher, it's totally worth it.

Friday 16 January 150-something lbs. Feeling like I could be on the cover of a magazine. Food consumed today: 2 Apples. May have snuck something else in, but I'm too busy to recall. Early in the day. New York: my office. Ugh. Gary Dale, my chief operating officer at Take-Two. You know, my "Gar Bear." Well, he told me he's leaving the company. His day-to-day duties are just done. I think I'm pretty bummed about this, but I'm feeling too good after my workout this morning to get hung up on it. Anyway, Gary became my COO last year after holding the same position over with those cash cows at Rockstar. We haven't talked publicly about why he's leaving ... sorry, Diary, I can't even tell you. Gar Bear will be officially done with the company on April 15. He's got this thing where it takes him a really long time to say goodbye.

Right about now Take-Two exec Gary Dale is likely placing an order to change the plaque on his office door. The publisher sent word this afternoon that the executive VP has been promoted to the position of chief operating officer, a role with which he should be intimately familiar, having previously served as Rockstar's COO during 2007. Currently the scope of Dale's new responsibilities remain vague, Take-Two noting only that he will continue to oversee the company's sales, international footprint, and business development, while keeping a watchful eye on the firm's various publishing labels. Take-Two CEO Ben Feder also emphasized Dale's role in the publisher's continuing growth, something we imagine will put the exec on the front lines, defending Take-Two from EA's insatiable hunger.
