It seems that God of War movie still exists on some nebulous, astral plane of pre-production. The screenplay originally penned by executive producer David Self is now being rewritten by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, according to The Hollywood Reporter.Melton and Dunstan come from a primarily horror-based background, with their resumes consisting of such classics as Saw IV, V and VI, as well as Feast, Feast II: Sloppy Seconds and Feast III: The Happy Finish. Considering how eloquent the dialogue generally is in a God of War game, they're probably the perfect choices.

  • Rumor: God of War movie script leaked

CC2K claims to have read an advance script of the God of War movie, written by David Self. We can't really judge the validity of the claim. The plot is an adaptation of the first game, and it's pretty easy to come across plot details from the game, by, you know, playing the game. The good news (well, good news if you like God of War's story), then, is that if this purported script is real (and it doesn't get rewritten to pieces, which it most certainly will, because it doesn't have any car chases or wisecracking sidekicks in it), it sticks to the game's material closely. One notable exception: the ending is different. We don't want to spoil the (possibly fake) ending of this movie that doesn't actually exist yet, so we'll leave it to you to see how Self left an opening for a sequel with a different story than what the game's sequel had.[Thanks, Graeme Heron]

Members of the Kratos Fan Club, you may now officially stop holding your breath: Brett Ratner is not directing the God of War movie. Please pass the word on to members without internet access. We wouldn't want anyone turning purple, now would we? According to Production Weekly (via Worst Previews), Ratner, who confirmed he was pursuing a green light on the picture in September 2008, has put God of War aside to instead make Trump Heist. The film is set to star Chris Tucker and Eddie Murphy, and tells the story of employees robbing the residents of the Trump Towers.Trump Heist sounds a bit more appropriate for the man behind X-Men: The Last Stand. That movie was hilarious.[Via Kotaku]

Despite most video game movies being of pretty low quality, we actually think the God of War movie has the potential to be incredibly awesome. And thankfully, series' creator David Jaffe has just given us an update on his blog after he recently had lunch with the movie's producer."Some big news could be coming on that front soon but nothing set in stone yet," he wrote. "But yeah, the project is still alive! And looking strong!"While that's not much to go on, it's just great to know that work is still ongoing, and we can't wait to hear what kind of big news is on its way.[Via 1up]
