Sega once made a game now legendary in arcades -- Golden Axe. In the age of 2D side-scrolling brawlers, it reigned supreme. Arguably. Way back in last May, Sega announced plans to bring Golden Axe to the newest generation of consoles but have been silent ever since. They have been working on a lot of other things, so we imagined the title fell by the wayside. Seems that at long last, Sega is making progress. We present these screenshots to you for your inspection. All the weird fantasy elements are there, but we've no idea how the game will play. So until then, get your cosplay on.

  • The VC Advantage: Ax Battler

The Internet has made it easy to find cheats for games, but we miss the tips pages from game magazines, when the discovery of a new code could inspire you to go back to an old game. These codes aren't exactly new, but oldness is the essence of the Virtual Console! We're bringing back the classic codes every week on The VC Advantage. Golden Axe has some weird inconsistencies regarding names. First, the name Golden Axe implies that there would be some kind of golden axe in the game. But the axe-wielding character's axe is silver. And, more confusingly, the axe-carrying warrior is not the guy named "Ax Battler"-- he uses a sword. We don't care if people don't like the Golden Axe games anymore. We still love playing them. We love riding chicken monsters as a huge cat-guy. We love the "bleah" sound all the enemies make when they die in Golden Axe II. Golden Axe (GEN)More Continues: At the character selection screen, hold down-left, A, and C. Release all the buttons and press Start. You'll have nine continues, which should help make up for all the jerks hitting you in the back while you're in the middle of a combo. Also the jerks running and jumping into you when you're trying to ride the chicken monster. The hard part is releasing the buttons at the appropriate time to choose your character (Gilius Thunderhead, of course) since holding down-left causes you to cycle through characters.Golden Axe II (GEN)Tons of magic: This glitch requires a little bit of inconvenience, but it's totally worth it. When the boss music starts to play in one of the first four levels, hold the A button and don't release it until the screen turns black. During the bonus stage, don't press any buttons at all. When the next stage starts, you'll have 255 magic points. If you try to use more than your character's maximum in one spell, you'll freeze the game. Altered Beast (GEN)Beast select: There don't seem to be any cheats for the once Japan-and-Sega Channel-exclusive Golden Axe III, so we decided to sub in another Genesis game that features anthropomorphic monster guys. This code will let you play as any of the game's beasts, including the rolling bear guy! At the title screen, hold all three buttons, then press Start. You'll be taken to a menu in which you can choose the beast transformation for each of the game's five stages!

  • Sonic and Golden Axe speed to Xbox Live Arcade

This week's Xbox Live Arcade titles are Golden Axe and, finally, Sonic the Hedgehog. Both cost a mere 400 Microsoft Points, with Golden Axe allowing for co-operative play on Live and locally. The Achievements for both titles were made available yesterday, and led us to believe that at the very least, GA was coming today. Fortunately, we were only half right, as Sonic finally made its debut under the Sega Vintage Collection line of titles. With any luck, we'll see Ecco and Sonic 2 follow suit.

  • Sonic, Golden Axe achievements, GA this week?

We've got a double whammy of Xbox Live Arcade news today. First of all, the achievements for both Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Axe have been uncovered. This has in turn spurred the rumor that Microsoft will unveil Golden Axe as tomorrow's XBLA release. Some are comparing this to last year's surprise release of DOOM during X06. Golden Axe is definitely a classic title, but we were hoping for something a little more exciting, like, say, Marathon. At any rate, we at least have confirmation of one more Sega classic on XBLA. Take that for what it's worth.Read -- Golden Axe coming this weekRead -- Sonic and Golden Axe achievements[Thanks, Scott]

  • This week on the Japanese Virtual Console: Golden Kung Fu Adventures

Hey, a Japanese Virtual Console update we don't have to be jealous of! Usually, Japan gets all kinds of great stuff, and we get, at best, Japan's great stuff from a month ago. This week: nothing to fret about, really. Front Line (Famicom, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) Adventures of Lolo (Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Golden Axe II (Mega Drive, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points) The Kung Fu (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points) We like Golden Axe II, but we feel confident it'll be here soon. We already know we're getting The Kung Fu this month (as China Warrior). We've never played Front Line, but it looks very ... proto-NES. That leaves Lolo, which, as a HAL Laboratory title and an okay game, is no doubt the subject of a lot of frothing demand. It'll come out here eventually!

We've previously seen Afterburner and Lemmings re-tooled, to make them suitable for our favorite portable. While both of those titles are enjoyable, there is still a ton of gold to be mined from the past, then reshaped into something grand and new. With that in mind, I thought it we'd do a public service, and remind publishers of some of those titles. Here they are in no particular order: Bionic Commando Contra Lunar Streets of Rage Splatter House Bonk Strider Double Dribble Golden Axe Shinobi Out of this World Zombie Ate My Neighbors Those are a few of the titles we'd like to see. But what does our opinion matter? Let us know what games we missed, or what classics you'd like to see resurrected on the PSP.

Fans of Sega, this is your week. Golden Axe and Ecco the Dolphin are available for play on the Virtual Console and we couldn't be happier. Well, we smile mostly for Golden Axe. You can't beat getting potions and spells by kicking a gnome. If you are looking to hack 'n' slash your way to victory while riding strange dinosaur creatures, look no further. Or, if one day you get the urge to be a cute little dolphin that swims around and does cute things, Nintendo can help for 800 points each. Hopefully we will see more and more Sega games get carried over to the VC. C'mon Eternal Champions! [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

A recent search of the ESRB website turned up some scintillating results. Though not confirmed for launch or any specific timeframe, the names of seven Sega greats are listed on ESRB as coming to the Wii virtual console...and holy hell, can they pick 'em. Check it out: Altered Beast Columns Ecco the Dolphin Golden Axe Ristar Sonic the Hedgehog Toe Jam & Earl You might recognize these games as being utter classics, some of the very best the Genesis had to offer. Most have at least a cult following, and they're sure to add a huge boost to the VC's popularity. Oh, how we long to echo-locate once more... [via Joystiq]

While PS2 and PSP users won't be getting the under-appreciated classic Toe Jam and Earl as part of a recently announced Genesis collection, it looks like Wii owners might get the game on their virtual consoles. The ESRB lists these seven classics when you search for Sega games for Nintendo's upcoming system: Altered Beast Columns Ecco the Dolphin Golden Axe Ristar Sonic the Hedgehog Toe Jam & Earl Each game got an E rating, with descriptors for comic mischief, animated violence and animated blood thrown in for good measure. While this isn't an official confirmation that the games are Wii-bound, it does seem to confirm that they have at least been submitted for ESRB rating, a logical first step. We can only hope that we'll be able to spend hundreds of dollars on new hardware just to relive the joy that is the Toe Jam rap.[Thanks, SuicidalMuskrat]

Joystiq had a post about some blurry next gen Golden Axe screens a few days ago. Turns out that SEGA actually released some very nice non-blurry character art during E3. Readers, meet Tyris. Tyris, readers. Check out one more shot after the jump (safe for work, but that doesn't mean your co-workers won't think you're a perv).

Close to a year ago, Sega announced a partnership with Secret Level that would revive a classic Sega franchise. A few guesses about what that franchise might be were tossed around over the months, and then, during this year's E3, Sega quietly announced that Golden Axe would be the series receiving the next-gen makeover.A trailer for the new Golden Axe was previewed behind closed doors at Sega's E3 booth. For whatever reason, the video has been slow to turn up on the internet. Retroplayer.tv recently posted 20 -- extremely blurry -- still frames. Anyone else have a link to a better reproduction?
