Killzone 2's presence on the PlayStation Blog continues to ramp up as we approach the game's release. A live chat with Seb Downey of Guerilla Games will take place on the Blog on February 18th at 12:00pm PST. So if you fancy getting some Killzone 2 info straight from the horse's mouth, you'd better turn up. We're not sure how much more there is to reveal about the game itself, but hopefully Downey will talk about some more upcoming Killzone.com features. We'll see you there.

  • Killzone 2 is GameFly's most wanted title

According to GamerDeals, Killzone 2 has topped GameFly's "Most Queued" list, making it the most popular title on the online rental service. This moment is marked also by the fact that this is the first time a PS3 title has held the top spot. The first-party, first-person shooter from Guerrilla Games has beaten out multiplatform games like Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5. For the full top ten list, be sure to have a look past the break. Now, there's one last inkling left on our minds. Seeing as Killzone 2 is the most sought after rental, we wonder if that implies anything about interest in buying the game? It'll be interesting to see what goes down when the game releases worldwide later this month.

  • Guerrilla warns early Killzone 2 copies won't work online

Think you're pretty slick picking up an overpriced promo disc from eBay, don't you? Well then, you won't feel so smooth after reading this. Guerrilla says those promotional copies of Killzone 2 lack a vital component of the game: its online features. For those who can't do the math, that's half a game for four times the price. That equals ... not such a good deal after all. If you want to play the game early, it's you might want to download the free demo from the European PlayStation Store instead. Just saying. [Via CVG]

It seems Killzone 2 will be synchronizing with the game's official website, Killzone.com, when it launches later this month. We've previously seen this sort of thing happen with Resistance 2 and MyResistance.net, but the developers at Guerilla Games are looking to reward in-game intel collectors with online prizes. These prizes will apparently come in "various shapes and sizes," including hi-res printable versions of in-game posters and even Killzone 2 papercraft, like the one seen above. Awesome. The PlayStation Blog post that reveals this game-website interactivity also hints at future synchronisation. At the moment the "My Killzone" section of the website is looking a bit empty, but no doubt all of this functionality will be rolled out by the game's launch later this month.

  • Europe goes preorder mad for Killzone 2

Europe has done it again. Killzone 2 has gone platinum in the region three weeks before it has even been released. UK newspaper The Guardian broke the news in an interview with SCEE president David Reeves; 1.1 million copies of Killzone 2 have already been preordered in Europe. Judging from the review scores, it's easy to see why. We certainly had very favorable things to say about the game in our review. You don't have long to wait before you can try it out yourself. The demo will be out on the PSN store later today. With three weeks left to the game's release, that number is sure to increase, especially when Sony launches its £2m advertising campaign later this month.

Killzone 2 doesn't come with a gimmick. It couldn't be easier on the eyes, but if you're looking for something outside of aesthetics that quickly sets it apart from the bevy of other first-person shooters on the market, you're not going to find it.In its first few hours, in terms of weapons, enemies and narrative, Killzone 2 designer Guerilla Games seems as if it's constantly making the most generic choice possible, and honestly, it was enough to put me off at first. Nearly every Helghast is the same perambulating black blob with red eyes and every weapon feels like something you've played with before. But, as I would discover in the following hours, what it lacks in bionic arms and guns that shoot portals, Killzone 2 makes up for with expertly refined shooting action that's likely to shame most of the genre's titles you'll put in your console this year.%Gallery-4719%

  • Metareview -- Killzone 2

    by

Ignore the fact that we still have about a month to go before Killzone 2 actually releases ... who's up for some reviews? The North American embargo for online media is up Monday (coincidentally, the very same day we're publishing our pretentious, non-numerical review), but Europe, print mags and IGN (sorry gang, not a world exclusive -- but close enough) have already doled out their numbers, thumbs-up and high-fives for the PS3-exclusive FPS and promptly moved on.Whether or not it was a good idea for reviews to hit this early is debatable (we may have to consider a second metareview closer to the late February launch), but at least the first critics appear to have positive things to say about Killzone 2: GamePro (100/100): "It took a long time for Killzone 2 to finally come out, but after diving head first into the game, there's no doubt in my mind that it lives up to the hype and is a must-play for FPS fans." IGN (94/100): "The single-player experience is a truly enjoyable campaign across the Helghast home world that will test your skills, particularly on the higher difficulty levels, and the game simply looks phenomenal for a console shooter. But perhaps the strongest segment of the game is the extremely deep multiplayer, which gives seven basic classes with which you can create your own customized super-soldier after performing your class-specific duties." IGN AU (90/100): "End line, Killzone 2 is, by IGN's definition, outstanding. It is consistent in every respect and is testament to the talents of the developer as well as the power of the PS3 in the hands of a team that knows how to use the hardware -- and who have the full support of Sony behind them. In the same stroke, it is not the be all and end all of console shooters, or even shooters on the PS3 - but if you've read this far and you're one of the Killzone devout, you probably won't care anyway. You can rest easy knowing it was ultimately worth the wait." Eurogamer (90/100): "This is a methodical shooter that makes few concessions to those not already interested in its single-minded approach to cover-based military action. I've compared it to Rainbow Six in the past, but it also calls to mind F.E.A.R, another tough tactical effort that was often misunderstood by those expecting a frag-happy spook hunt. Killzone 2 is a taut and muscular game, a shooter that gives back more than you put in, provided you have the intestinal fortitude. It may take its time revealing its true depths and pleasures, but the journey is well worth taking." Curious about Killzone 2? Sony finally saw fit to confirm that Killzone 2 will begin its retail assault on Europe the week of February 25. "PAL regions" will receive the game on Feb. 25, while the UK and Ireland can get in the zone two days later -- same as North America. As Eurogamer points out, the Feb. dates have been listed by retail for a while, but we all know it's never official until the fat lady -- about to experience serious liposuction -- sings.Killzone 2 will also receive a special PS3 bundle in the region. Now, how about that European demo date? Curious about Killzone 2? Perhaps by now you've decided whether you've wanted to board the Killzone 2 hype-train or not. If you have, then you'll have seen the gameplay videos, prepared for the release day, and read up on everything you'll ever need to know. The game's now just one month away, though that wait may seem unbearable. There's only one thing which can abate that feeling of longing and that's perhaps to have a taste of one of the first things you'll ever see upon putting in that mint new disc. We're talking about the opening cinematic scene to Killzone 2. Watch it right here after the break if you've got to purge that urge; however, don't, if you want to keep the whole experience fresh on February 27. [Thanks T-e-X!]

The UK will receive its umpteenth PS3 bundle with the release of Killzone 2. The package will cost £300 ($416) and be available ... actually, Europe still doesn't have a confirmed release date for the title. If this bundle were released in North America -- and that seems unlikely -- it would hit alongside the game on February 27. Hopefully, Sony Europe will see fit to announce a launch date sometime soon. Curious about Killzone 2? Word on da street is that a Killzone 2 bundle is headed for Europe -- there's even a picture of the bundle to accompany the rumor. From the looks of it, the bundle will include an 80GB PS3, a single DualShock 3 controller and a copy of the PS3 exclusive first-person shooter. No release date was given, but we are assuming it will be around the same time as the release date for the game, February 25th.If this proves to be true, we think US gamers can officially be jealous of gamers on the Old Continent. Spoiler alert. These videos contain many things from Killzone 2, including story points and gameplay from the later parts of the game. Of course, these are totally awesome story points and gameplay, so if you don't mind the game losing a little mystery, you're in for a treat. Having said that, the first video is both spoiler-free and the best of the bunch. Entitled "Ballet of Death," it shows off the game's detailed and bloody death animations, put to a classical music soundtrack. Nice. Check out all the videos after the break.

Sometimes when Sony refuses to comment on something, there are others who will be happy to do so. In the case of release dates, retailers are the best people to turn to and, as Eurogamer have found out, tend to know when high profile games are likely to be released. Like Killzone 2 hitting the UK on February 27th, two days after certain other European territories. It's unconfirmed by SCEE, but these are the dates certain retailers have been "advised to expect" the launch. This falls in line with the American release date, which is also February 27th. A demo is also expected to hit sometime before the game launches.

  • Killzone 2 musical score is 90 minutes long, soundtrack album is a possibility

Joris de Man is the man behind the music of all the Killzone games, including the new one which hits PS3 next month. Music4Games caught up with de Man during the KZ2 score recordings at Abbey Road Studios back in November, and have gotten quite a few interesting tidbits out of him regarding the game's composition.Said de Man, "In total there is around 60 minutes of interactive in-game music (the music adapts its intensity to the gameplay), which was done with midi, and 28 minutes of orchestral music for the front-end and cutscenes, which is being recorded here at Abbey Road." All of that will be new music, but that doesn't mean some old tunes won't appear. Lovers of the original "Helghast Theme" from the first Killzone will be excited to know that it'll still be around in KZ2 but with "a new variation."Another part of the interview which tickled our interest is the possibility of a separate soundtrack album release. While gaming soundtrack albums are all too common in Japan, Western titles have yet to truly pick up on the trend -- GTA and its myriad of radio station compilations don't count. De Man said "it's something we're looking into with Sony Music."

Ready to jump aboard the Killzone 2 hype train? Sony has announced that Guerilla Games' much-hyped PS3 shooter will infiltrate North America retailers on Friday, February 27, 2009 (via G4), where it will face fierce competition from pretty much no one. As for our friends living across the pond, a Sony UK spokesperson has told Video Gamer that the company is "targeting a similar timeframe for the release of Killzone 2 in the PAL regions." With 84 days until the North America launch, we anticipate a marketing blitz to commence just after the new year.%Gallery-4719%

  • What's it like to go hands on with Killzone 2 multiplayer?

It's funny you should ask, because Joystiq just posted a hands-on report of Killzone 2's Multiplayer from Leipzig. So if you're as intrigued by this game as we are we suggest you check it out and see what they thought. By which, we mean us. All this third-person talk is starting to get a little confusing, so just click the link and be done with it.Killzone 2 is shaping up to be an incredible game, and not just graphically. While we didn't originally expect the multiplayer to be a big draw for the game, it's definitely now the most exciting aspect. If Guerilla Games succeeds in giving us an awesome single player campaign too, Resistance 2 will have to make the most of its few months head start, because Killzone 2 has the potential to flatten it.

Killzone 2's multiplayer gameplay was shown off behind closed doors at the Leipzig Game Convention this week and we were there to get our hands well and truly on. As is customary for these breakdown sessions, we were given a short presentation by members of the development team. We were told about the Squad system, which allows players to form 4-man groups mid-game. Doing so will show your squadmates' health bars, allow you a private headset channel and let you use the squad leader as a spawn point, keeping you together constantly. Setting up squads is easily done in the spawn menu. When a player receives a squad invite, they will receive a flashing notification. Accepting or declining takes only a couple of button presses from that point, making sure you're kept in the game at all times.Guerilla Games also ran through the extensive community features found in the game. Full clan support, featuring 64 players each, 16 vs 16 clan challenges, four separate leaderboards, a mind-boggling array of stats being tracked and a clan currency system. "Valor" is wagered by each clan at the start of inter-clan skirmishes, with the total being awarded to the winner. Earning valor will propel you up the leaderboards and the intention is to host official clan tournaments, made up of 256 clans, with the entire valor pot going to the overall winner.%Gallery-30087%

After watching the Killzone 2 multiplayer trailer, we wondered how much more fun the game's online mode would be without your typical multiplayer douche. Well, now we can find out! The upcoming FPS will, indeed, feature bots. These will be fully customizable difficulty-wise, and can fill in for players either online or offline, allowing any Billy-No-Mates to enjoy a friendly match every once in a while.Additionally, vehicles are currently only available in the single player mode. Multiplayer vehicles will be patched in after the game is released. Also being patched post-launch is a co-op mode for the story. Whether this will be online or not, we're not entirely certain. Considering the long delay Killzone has suffered enjoyed, we're surprised this won't be included from the get-go. Perhaps we'll have to pay for it, but we're used to that by now, right? Be sure to check out our full Killzone 2 hands-on impressions, coming soon.Update: Guerrilla has a history of making free DLC with Killzone: Liberation (PSP). It released an Infrastructure multiplayer mode and an extra single-player level months after the game's release.

The fine bunch of gaming journos at Electronic Gaming Monthly have themselves quite a cover this month. It's covered in Helghast, and that can only mean one thing: oodles of Killzone 2 coverage. The game hasn't been seen for over a month now, and, even then, it was a lot of what we'd already seen in video form ... only playable. With E3 just around the corner, EGM is taking the wraps off more of the game, promising to divulge "everything you need to know about PS3's killer app." More killer than Metal Gear Solid 4?
