Sony continues to follow the time-tested formula for reaching out to females: belittle their intelligence, turn them into stereotypes, and color a product pink -- or in this case, lilac. In addition to launching the Limited Edition Hannah Montana PSP Entertainment Pack today, SCEA is introducing its "Girlz Play Too" initiative which shows how Sony is "committed to bringing a steady stream of female-friendly content to consumers.""The gaming world has traditionally been a male domain, but today we're seeing more and more female gamers, particularly on portable devices," says John Koller, SCEA's Director of Hardware Marketing. "While SCEA has a broad range of PSP owners from under 12 to over 45 years old, we saw a tremendous opportunity for us to connect with the female and 'tween' demographic and create a PSP system that girls will love." Changing the color from black to an off-purple tone was exactly what girls were waiting for.The "Girlz Play Too" website lets girlz (not girls, mind you) explore the features of the PSP system, customize a virtual PSP and take a quiz to find out which game character they are. This blogger? "You are So LocoRoco!" TOTALLY!

SCEA is showing a new initiative to cater to young girls at its Destination Playstation event today. The company has announced a new PSP bundle to be released in July, containing a PSP system in a new Lilac color. The bundle comes with a Hannah Montana rhythm game, a UMD of episodes from the series, a 2 GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, and some stickers! In addition, Ubisoft's Petz line is headed to PSP in North America later this year, allowing players to "create and care for cute, furry pets chosen from many different breeds of dogs, cats, horses, hamsters, dolphins, tigers and bunnies." The likely first release: GameStop shows Petz Saddle Club coming this September. This series may help enhance young players' impressions of the PSP, by reminding them of the Nintendo DS.

  • Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus 3D coming to Starz HD July 26

Put fears of missing the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour debut on Disney Channel July 26 at 8 p.m. aside as Starz has announced it will also air the flick, an hour later in SD & HD. Disney hasn't mentioned if the concert will be in HD on its high definition network, so this may give fans (we know you're out there) a chance to check it out before the Blu-ray disc hits shelves in August. It looks like anaglyph (red/blue) technology is what's bringing the 3D, for the necessary goofy looking glasses, either pick them up in a Wal-mart while supplies last or make your own following instructions on the Starz website.

Worry no more, the biggest 3D movie ever is making a HD first, when it hits Blu-ray August 19 it will include 2D and 3D viewing options. No word if it will come with requisite glasses or anything else necessary to get that extra D With a movie that did unprecedented numbers at the box office, this is sure to be one of the year's biggest releases and with never-before-seen options, might be a good reason to share the home theater with your favorite 'tween.

With the game's impending release in Europe, a new trailer for Hannah Montana: Music Jam is circulating. We're reminded of our naive, unexpected interest in the title before its American release. We were impressed by the multiple instrument simulations, thinking we had stumbled upon a Jam Sessions killer. We found out later that we had not. Even just considering the guitar/bass/drum gameplay, it's a miss due to the sound quality. If nothing else, this trailer demonstrates the most effective method of having fun with Hannah Montana: Music Jam: appearing in commercials for Hannah Montana: Music Jam. That was our mistake -- we tried playing the game instead.

  • The best and worst (that we've reviewed)

2007 is almost over, and the end of the year brings joyous tidings of List Season. It's the time for taking stock of the last 12 months of gaming, and trying to make sense of it by putting things in numerical order. Join DS Fanboy for our best-ofs, worst-ofs, and other categories-ofs.We cranked up our review quotient in 2007 (and hope to do even more in 2008!), but we still can't review everything that comes out, to our chagrin. We wouldn't have time for anything else! However, we did try to hit a wide variety of titles this year, from the biggies like Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and Phantom Hourglass, to some smaller titles, like WordJong and Duck Amuck. We even worked to review some more off-the-wall things, like the Nintendo Fan Network at Safeco Field -- you know, in case you happened to find yourself in the Northwest with a hankering for a day of DS and baseball.

Gaming sites are inundated with holiday gift guides at the end of the year, listing the best and most popular games that everyone pretty much already has (or knows about). Well, we're not going in for that this year. Our gift guide will help you find the best gifts in categories the other sites won't cover -- because we just made them up.Do you just love handing out the most horrific holiday gifts? If you're the kind of person who actually tucks sticks and coal into the stocking of a loved one on Christmas Eve, then this list is for you. It's all about the worst of the worst, the bottom of the barrel -- the games you would shudder to find on your own shelf, or worse, tainting your DS. Before you ask -- yes, we do love to see you cringe and suffer at the horrors we spring on you. Aren't we sweet?

  • DS Fanboy Review: Hannah Montana: Music Jam

    by

I've never tried to review a game that was as obviously, emphatically Not for Me as Hannah Montana: Music Jam. The game is pretty clearly targeted at fans of the Disney Channel series, a category to which I, sadly, do not belong. More broadly, the game is targeted at little girls, a larger group that still does not include me. Disney Channel games are a completely different world of gaming with which most of us have no experience. They are a mystery that, for the most part, we don't care to solve. But Hannah Montana: Music Jam showed signs of quality that shocked us in initial screenshots. As moony as we were over Ubisoft's Jam Sessions, here was a game that seemed to do all that Jam Sessions could do and more, buried under a poisonous license. In the end, Music Jam doesn't hold up to that excellent product, but, provided you are in the target audience, it isn't as exploitively, lazily terrible as we imagine most licensed children's games to be. Parts of it are pretty good. But in the end, there are so many great kid-friendly games on the DS that lack the license but are just better.

We're not ashamed to admit that we're somewhat excited about Hannah Montana: Music Jam. Oh, not because of Hannah herself or anything, but because this very random little title just looks like it could put Jam Sessions to shame. You thinking of at least renting it? It's okay to admit it. We won't tell. If not, there's plenty more to choose from this week: Avatar: The Last Airbender -- The Burning Earth The Bee Game Disney Princess: Magical Jewels Fish Tycoon Flash Focus: Vision Training in Minutes a Day Fullmetal Alchemist: Trading Card Game Hannah Montana: Music Jam Power Rangers: Super Legends Prism: Light the Way Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure Tony Hawk's Proving Ground And for the GBA: Avatar: The Last Airbender -- The Burning Earth Check out the rest of the world's major markets after the jump.

  • Disney unloads a barrage of tween-centric consumer electronics

Worried your kids haven't been completely indoctrinated with the Disney universe and its philosophy of watch, buy, and buy? Well fear not, parents, because the cartoon-kingpin has got your back (and your pocketbook). If your tweens have been looking for something to do, and playing stickball just ain't cuttin' the mustard, maybe they need the $99.99 Disney Flix Video Camera (pictured), a tween-targeted digital video camera that comes bundled with Disney Director software, which lets the little rapscallions star in their own Disney movies. The company is also offering LCD TVs, such as the $299.99, 15-inch High School Musical model, which resembles a locker and sports 1024 x 768 resolution (the displays also come in Disney Princess, Hannah Montana, and Pirates of the Caribbean motifs). Additionally, the cartoon-factory is offering docks for use with your iPod, selling for $69.99, which feature alarm clocks and AM/FM tuners, though the Hannah Montana version does double duty as a guitar amp -- presumably to use with your Disney guitar. All the products will be available sometime this Fall, but good luck getting your kids to wait patiently.[Via StockHouse]

  • DS Daily: The Suite Life of Zack & Cody & You

We were just wondering how much our awesome DS Fanboy audience crossed over with the "mainstream" audience. And by that we mean people who pick up the Disney Channel tie-in games. We're not making fun here; we aren't judging or anything. We are genuinely interested. Who among us has played The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, or Hannah Montana, or That's So Raven: Psychic on the Scene? We usually pay no attention at all to this stuff, so we'd actually like to hear impressions of it from our commenting friends. Are they bland? Are any of them surprisingly playable? Or hilariously, lovably awful?

If you're in the market for a particular gadget and you're unable to find a Disney-themed version, well, you're just not looking hard enough. Second only to Hello Kitty as shameless animated shills for cheap electronics, Mickey and friends have just released yet another portable DVD player -- now with 10% less explosions! -- along with a digital photo viewer, Princess and Cars swag to go along with yesterday's Pirates of the Caribbean silliness, and new skins for nearly all of its five million MixPixMaxClixStix devices. The Dual-Screen Mobile DVD System, as it's known, features two seven-inch LCDs that hook onto the back of both front seat headrests; the kiddies still have to watch the same movie, but now there's less of a chance that they'll give each other concussions fighting for the best viewing angle. As for the Show Pix photo frame, you're getting a keychain-sized, um, keychain with a 1.1-inch LCD that can store 50 of Junior's best in-class pics of his teacher slowly being tormented into insanity from all this Disney crap. Finally, the Mix Max PMP, Mix Stix and Mix Clip DAPs, and Pix Micro, Pix Click, and Pix Max digital cameras (try saying that even two times fast) are all getting hot new looks courtesy of Pirates and undercover pop star Hannah Montana (pictured, and we swear we had to look that up). Available immediately, the DVD system bundled with a sampler disc is going for $180, the Show Pix will run you $40 apiece, and the gazillion other models cost the same as they always did.[Via PMP Today]

  • DS games pepper Next-Gen's top 100 games of 2006

    by

    02.13.2007

Where can you find Hannah Montana hanging out with FFIII? No, not on a shelf at your local GameStop -- in Next Generation's list of the top 100 best-selling games in North America in 2006. But you get more than just a regular ol' list; they also broke the games down by average critical rating, and it's pretty interesting to compare sales with review ratings. More signs that the review system could use an overhaul? Or just an indication that critics and gamers often look for different things? Some interesting things we noticed while perusing the list: Bratz outsold a lot of very good DS games, including Tetris. We can only guess that Games 4 Girls campaign worked. Also, we're now certain that Bratz dolls should be banned, due to the fact that they're obviously both evil and insidious. People really dig Cars. DS games started to get fewer and further apart as the list wound down. We suspect that's simply because there are too many great DS games for people to buy. Our wallets hurt. Really. But we're not complaining. Nintendogs barely made it into the top 50. We're surprised. The highest ranked DS exclusive: New Super Mario Bros., which came in at number 5.
