Snail Games has officially announced the fourth expansion for its strategy game Heroes of Gaia. Ascension allows players to rise to five new levels of fame, access new cooperative instances, hire temporary mercenaries for castle sieges, and adopt three new command styles for castle development. However, HoG is not done expanding. As Snail Games USA Director of Operations Mark Hill explains in a resent press release, "This is only the first of two major expansions we have planned for Heroes of Gaia. We have an extremely dedicated group of players on HoG, and we are proud to offer them these new and exciting ways to experience the game." Let's get real: Who hasn't wanted to own a castle? Now you can, and with the new Ascension expansion, the developers have redesigned the tutorial and an adjusted novice gift pack, which will allow a new player to gain the skills and equipment he needs to compete with more veteran players. Check out all the latest on this and future expansions for Heroes of Gaia on the official website... and have fun storming the castle!

Good news everyone! It's Friday, and you know what that means? It means Sera has a reason to give stuff away! (Even though, technically, I have a reason to give stuff away every day.) This week we're running a contest for 10 special in-game prize packs in Heroes of Gaia, a browser-based MMORTS that we've been following for some time now. Heroes of Gaia is, as you would expect, a free-to-play game, so if you've been looking for something that's a bit more strategic, then you certainly can give this game a go. To make the pot a little sweeter, we've teamed up with Snail Games USA to provide ten in-game item packs for 10 lucky commenters. Awesome? Yes. Easy to win? Of course! However, you only have a single day to enter! Therein lies "the catch" as they say. Interested to know how to enter? It's as simple as dropping off a comment after the break, so continue reading for complete instructions! [Update: The contest is now closed! Thank you everyone for entering, we'll post the winners shortly!]

  • Heroes of Gaia's newest expansion now live

The second expansion for free-to-play MMO Heroes of Gaia went live last night. The expansion is titled Rise of the Guilds, a name that seems to be awfully popular these days. This one brings new content for all levels of player: "...a new Guild Battle system which will create a deep Guild-versus-Guild competition element, along with personal rankings, equipment forging, a number of new high-level NPCs, and a multitude of new functional and vanity items in the HoG Shop." The Heroes of Gaia team is expecting a fair number of new players thanks to the expansion, and has opened a new server to accommodate them. The Nemesis server is available now, and will be the site of some special bonus events, prizes, and gift packages available for purchases in the cash shop. Check out the Heroes of Gaia site for details on Rise of the Guilds.

  • Heroes of Gaia tops 1,000,000 players

It's a rare feat when an MMO tops one million users these days. Even the big titles with big marketing budgets struggle to land several hundred thousand players due to the glut of games crowding the market. Heroes of Gaia has done just that, as the browser-based free-to-play MMORTS from Snail Games USA announced today that their monthly active-user population has topped 1,000,000 worldwide for the ongoing open beta. "Many browser-game developers and publishers claim traffic numbers which are based upon 'total lifetime accounts,'" said Michael Chan, Vice President of Global Business for Snail Games USA. "And this can be highly deceptive because many of those accounts are inactive. Our one million plus Heroes of Gaia users are unique accounts who have logged in during the past 30 days." Heroes of Gaia players can select one of four fantasy factions and use their hero to build castles, complete quests, and summon armies, all in the name of real-time strategic combat.

Heroes of Gaia, the free-to-play, browser-based MMO from Snail Game, launched its first expansion today. Heroes of Gaia launched back in October, and the BABEL expansion adds quite a bit of new content to the game on both the PvP and PvE sides. Updates to the PvE side begin with the Tower of Babel, a 40-level tower with progressively more difficult guardians (and better rewards!) on each level. The Tower of Babel can be attempted once per day, but fight carefully, because a defeat will expel you from the tower empty handed. The tower isn't the only new challenge facing players, though. Three times a day 20 minions will appear on your world map, each defending a powerful boss monster in an instanced challenge. PvP has gotten a nice facelift as well, with the addition of new Arena rules, new military ranks, and a very generous list of new military equipment. The full list, as well as all the new additions that came with the BABEL expansion, can be seen on the official site.

For being in beta and being a browser based MMORTS, Heroes of Gaia is making a splash by garnering over 600,000 active monthly accounts worldwide for their beta -- a number that's nothing to sneeze at. Heroes of Gaia is a browser-based 2D isometric strategy game, where you build a persistent kingdom and armies to both defend your land and steal it from other unsuspecting players. The game is currently in an open beta phase right now, but is looking forward to their first major update, entitled Babel, which will implement many of the requests of the player base. If you think raising and army and conducting RTS combat is your thing, then you should jump on over to their main website and give the game a glance. It's free and run on an item shop, so there's not much to lose except a few minutes of your time.
