While most people are probably satisfied to send their photos from iPhoto through their Gmail accounts using Mail, some people would rather have a more direct option. For example, sending large files through Mail seems to be no problem for me, yet from the same network with exactly the same settings, my wife's Mail chokes and spits and frequently fails when she tries to send a bunch (or even a few) pictures from iPhoto. Tired of playing with her SMTP settings and getting everything working for one message, just to have it fail on the next one, I finally went in search of a more direct approach. My wife and I are both "switchers," and back in Windows we were used to Picasa, which has the ability to send photos via a Gmail account built-in. Makes sense, since Google owns Picasa, but that's exactly what I was looking hoping to get iPhoto to do. In my searches I came across an iPhoto plugin called iPhoto2Gmail. When I tried it last week, it hung my iPhoto instance every time I tried it and I had to force quit iPhoto. I gave up on iPhoto2Gmail, but couldn't find anything else. In desperation, I went back to have another look at iPhoto2Gmail and discovered that it had been updated to version 1.0. Crossing my fingers, I gave it a try, and... it works great! Though I don't need it on my machine, I really like the direct simplicity of sending my photos from right inside iPhoto, and I think I'll continue to use iPhoto2Gmail. If you've been struggling with sending photos through a Gmail account, this might be a useful option for you.

If you love Aperture (or iPhoto) like we do, then you know that there are some nice plug-ins that allow you to export pictures to differing photo sites (i.e. Flickr, etc.). However, if you use Gmail's web based e-mail service, then you are out of luck ... until now! Aperture2Gmail (or iPhoto2Gmail) allows you to export your photos in a new e-mail directly to Gmail. You can also resize on-the-fly, just like you can in Mail.app. So, no more exporting from Aperture or iPhoto and uploading to Gmail one by one. Aperture2Gmail and iPhoto2Gmail is available from the developer's website as donationware.

You know that handy feature in iPhoto where you click the Email button and it launches your default email client and attaches a perfectly-sized pic for you to share with whomever you wish? If you use Mail.app or Entourage or Eudora or even AOL that feature works great. But what if you use Gmail as your default email client? You're out of luck... Until now! Juan Leon has whipped up an iPhoto plugin that lets you use Gmail to send photos directly from iPhoto. Once installed you'll use the Export menu dialog to access it. The only catch, and hopefully this will change further along in the development process, is you lose the spiffy resizing options that the built-in iPhoto Email handler uses. Instead, if your pic is already smaller than 800x600, you just send it "full size." If it's larger than 800x600, then select the "Send Scaled" option and it will shrink it to 800x600, which is generally small enough for you to send to most people. iPhoto2Gmail works with iPhoto 5 and iPhoto 6 and it's Universal Binary. It's also donationware, so if you use it, consider tipping the developer.Juan says "I used this as an excuse to get my feet wet with Cocoa and all the neat new Xcode features. This is the result... so far. It is still a very early piece of software, probably has many bugs, and is rough around the edges. I hope to improve on it and that it will be useful to some folks."I tested it. It works as expected. Makes my life easier. I don't ask for much more than that.[via Hawk Wings]
