Sony Ericsson's Acro leaked, shows up its older brother
Whoa there, Mister Clickety-click, contain that check-box excitement just a tick. Thanks to a keen set of eyes (and an overly-eager Sony Ericsson employee), we present SE's latest unreleased Xperia, the Acro -- a refinement to its recent Gingerbread-wielding Arc that you most certainly weren't meant to see. Duplicating the core specs of its sibling, Sony's future stuntman takes it a step further, performing infrared and NFC communication, while also showcasing its DTV reception skills -- you know, so the locals can get their fill of zany game shows on the commute. Like its kin, the Arc features a 1GHz Snapdragon MSM8255, 4.2-inch display and an 8.1 megapixel Exmor R sensor, just like the one you may or may not see in future iPhones. Even though the TV function is decidedly intriguing, we know you're just considering beaming bits of IrDA glory to your graphing calculator. Hey, there's no shame in that. Sharp IS01 Snapdragon-powered 3G MID introduces AU to Android
After Softbank announced the HTC Desire and DoCoMo began pushing its very first Android smartphone (Xperia X10), Japan had big hopes for AU's press event today. An EVO perhaps, or maybe something more from this once proud home of the original superphones? Unfortunately, Engadget Japanese let out a collective meh in response to a 5-inch IS01 handheld from Sharp running Android 1.6 on a Snapdragon processor and measuring 83 × 149 × 17.9mm and 227g. While it looks like the classic Japanese eDictionary, the IS01 is meant to be used as a general purpose MID with a 5-row QWERTY, Sharp-built "New Mobile ASV" multi-touch capacitive display pushing a 960 x 480 pixel resolution and a 5.27 megapixel auto focus camera on back with a 0.43 megapixel jobbie up front for video calls. Rounding out the specs are 802.11 b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, microSD slot, 1Seg mobile TV tuner, IrDA, 4GB of internal storage, and Qualcomm 3G CDMA data. Look for it to ship in October while a developer friendly version (JN-DK01) should be available in May.
KDDI touts speedy upgrade to IR transfer technology
We're going to hazard a guess that it's been a while since most of you used good 'ol IrDA to transfer any data to your cellphone, but it looks like the folks at KDDI have got themselves on an old school kick, and they're now looking to bring the technology back to some of its former glory. To that end, the company recently revealed its progress on a new form of the technology that upgrades transfer speeds to a full 1Gbps, or about 250 times faster than the previous limit. That's apparently possible by replacing the standard LED with a new speedy new semiconductor laser, which gets paired with some nonvolatile memory to ensure that burst of data doesn't get lost along the way. Of course, all this is still in the early stages, and KDDI doesn't even seem to be offering so much as a hint as to when we might actually see it put to use.[Via The Boy Genius Report]
Samsung E428 aims for the mobile-minded princess
We're not exactly sure how many princesses these days actually carry cellphones, but this handset may be just the phone for the young female royalty-wannabe set. Or at least that's what Samsung is hoping for with its latest model, the E428. This newcomer brings an elegant white case with lace-like designs on the front cover, sports a camera (we've got conflicting info on whether it's a 0.3 or a 3.0 megapixel version), and shines with a 65,000-color OLED 1.8-inch screen that supports 128 x 160, GPRS and IrDA. That's the good news; the bad news is we're not sure what upstanding, self-respecting woman would want to have a phone without Bluetooth, but perhaps there's something about royalty that we don't understand.
