Someone over at IslandOfRhodes.org finally got around to tacking the "r" and "us" onto "God of Wa: Chains of Olymp," setting in motion a cataclysmic series of events that has unearthed this trailer and unleashed a mail-order UMD demo (Sony, you know the PSP can like totally do that WiFi thing and download stuff, right?). So, did we mention the demo is only available while supplies last? That means the dude who read this a second ago is already clicking away. What are you waiting for ... a bigger price cut?[Via PSP Fanboy]

The Island of Rhodes continues to tease us. The countdown has been extended yet again, as more and more of this mysterious God of War title gets revealed. Justin McElroy from Joystiq spent hours trying to get past that silly block-sliding puzzle hidden on the site to unearth God of War: Chains of Olymp--. There's only two days until we find out the truth, and we pray to the Gods that the full revelation will be something PSP fans can truly celebrate.

We care about you here at Joystiq, and in a lot of subtle ways that you probably don't always appreciate. Like see that screenshot up above? That says "God of Wa: Chains of Olymp" which we assume is most of the title of the God of War PSP game. It's set to complete its display in a couple of days when we hope it will say God of War: Chains of Olympics 2008: Kratos & Mario & Sonic. But it will probably say God of War: Chains of Olympus, because that's just the way life works. You know what else? We're not going to tell you how we found it. We'll just say it's the latest addition to IslandOfRhodes.org, which has become a veritable cornucopia of GoW secrets, and leave it at that. If you're interested in tracking this title down, we're sure that you can find that sort of info, but you're not getting it from us. Trust us, it's an hour of random clicking that you're just not going to get back, and by keeping it from you, we have given you the gift of an hour of your life. Now go, and please ... pay it forward.[Thanks, Daniel]

  • IslandofRhodes.org hides God of War 2' 'HD Mode' and countdown

We admit it. We were disappointed to learn there wasn't an announcement attached to the super-secret God of War-themed IslandofRhodes.org viral site we first spotted last month. Turns out, first impressions can be deceiving. Through beating the site's puzzles, dedicated gamers (like the ones at GameFAQs) can find out how to enable the ditched-at-the-last-minute "HD mode" on God of War 2. Note: "this is NOT 720p. Its actually 480p with FULL SIZE buffers, in other words 640*448 resolution." We're not really sure what "full size buffers" are either, but a brief test using a PS3 and an HD monitor didn't provide a very noticeable increase (except in page tearing). If you want to test for yourself, follow the instructions pasted after the break. Also hidden at the site was yet another countdown! This one is set to go off in just over eleven days time. What's going to happen then? We imagine it'll be something besides a developer commentary site and the little sliver above seems to hint at a phrase beginning with "G." Gout of War, anybody?[Thanks, Wreckhart & ranova; via Kotaku]

  • God of War's IslandofRhodes.org is developer commentary site

Following weeks of speculation IslandofRhodes.org is revealed as a site full of developer commentary about God of War 2. A little bit of fan service that was supposed to activate last night at midnight, but then the clock reset itself for another two days -- this morning, the site is working. Speculation about the website surfaced following a video on YouTube where somebody accumulated a high enough combo count to reveal the mysterious URL. At the time, we were unaware if the video was a hoax, but after speaking with a representative from Sony were told the site is real -- but that's all they were willing to say.So, it's not an announcement for God of War 3. Don't worry, we're sure that'll come around soon enough. The site does have some neat commentary with Cory Barlog, director of GoW, about the Colossus scene (like it was originally even longer) and other developers. Remember, in a world without the intertubes, to even learn about the site you had to reach an insane combo count, so this was originally meant as fan service. If you've played God of War 2 and are interested in some of the technical background information go check it out.

  • IslandofRhodes.org, elaborate fake or new announcement?

The jury is out if this is brilliant viral marketing or the simple fact that when millions of people play a game they'll eventually find something hidden -- but the timing is a little too convenient. In a video for God of War II (found after the break) a player works their way to a 999,999 hit combination. When reaching the achievement a URL pops onto the screen (0:43 mark in video) for IslandofRhodes.org. The website shows a countdown to April 11 with Kratos' menacing face watching over a burning field.Although we have our crack team of Joystiq video analysts pouring over the video frame by frame trying to figure out if it's a complete hoax, if real, we're going to go with the website has something to do with Kratos' upcoming PSP adventure. Although that would be strange considering whatever the site is, the game it's promoting is rated M. According to the ESRB, they have not yet rated God of War for PSP. So Joystiq nation, does that website show up when you hit 999,999 and what does it all mean?[Thanks Wine]

The God of War official website has an interesting easter egg: you'll see links to the first and second God of War prominently displayed, but off to the right-hand side, you'll see a mysterious, burning red Omega sign. Doesn't it look a lot like the promo for the Island of Rhodes? As of now, the link does not direct you anywhere. However, once the countdown to the Rhodes is done, chances are that will all change. The PS3 God of War will get a number III: the Omega sign is most likely referring to the PSP version which, as you may recall, features an original storyline.[Thanks, Kaiser!]

What's hidden at the Island of Rhodes? A mysterious countdown shows Kratos staring ominously at the viewer through two walls of fire. The time seems to point to the pending European release of God of War II, but the site is registered to Sony Computer Entertainment of America. There are PS2 logos at the bottom, but we know the next two games are coming on PSP and PS3.So what's going on? Looks like we're going to have to wait and see.[Via IGN][Update 1: According to IGN, this website isn't related to the upcoming PSP version of God of War. Rather, "The website is for true God of War fans ... Think of the original God of War." A cryptic clue, no?]
