Developer Disco Pixel has announced that its rhythm-based platformer Jungle Rumble: Freedom, Happiness and Bananas is coming to Sony's Vita handheld. In Jungle Rumble, players control a troop of monkeys that must battle an opposing simian faction for control of the local banana supply. "Using the PS Vita's touch screen to tap along to the beat of the jungle, players drum on monkeys and then drum on trees to have their simian soldiers swing through the trees," reads the developer's official gameplay description. "Drum on coconuts and then drum on enemies to throw those coconuts with rhythmic flair." Unlike most rhythm games, Jungle Rumble doesn't require that players mimic existing songs, but instead the game creates a dynamic soundtrack to match the rhythmic drum hits which control the in-game action. Though Disco Pixel offers a solid description of the game, the developer fails to mention when Jungle Rumble might reach the Vita, beyond saying that it should arrive "very soon." Real-time strategy games can be like a dance: you memorize the proper steps, pay attention to your pace, and watch your partner/opponent so you can react accordingly - calling in an airstrike, perhaps. So really, the fact that Jungle Rumble combines the RTS genre with rhythm-based gameplay shouldn't be too surprising. The game, available now for $4 and compatible with iOS devices, pits you against an enemy tribe of monkeys that's come to steal what's most precious to you: bananas. Players tap the screen to the soundtrack's beat to move and attack, eventually overwhelming the rival simians and claiming all of the delicious fruit. If you need some advice on how to be the best monkey strategist you can be, maybe you could take some lessons from fellow primate King Louie? He's got the rhythm part down and he is a king. Rhythm-based tap-em-up Jungle Rumble is coming to iOS and Android early next year, Disco Pixel President Trevor Stricker has told Joystiq. Price has yet to be determined. In Jungle Rumble, players must tap along to the beat – think Patapon – in order to defend a tribe of monkeys from being overrun by a group of invaders. By keeping the beat, players move monkeys around a game grid and attack invaders by throwing coconuts. The game is punctuated by a dynamic soundtrack that changes as players successfully chain together actions.

A Boston Indie Game Collective initiate, Disco Pixel, will launch its simian-themed "rhythm-RTS" Jungle Rumble for iOS and Android devices later this year. Described as a mixture of Sony's tribal rhythm game Patapon and Nintendo's strategy classic Advance Wars, Jungle Rumble puts players in charge of a family of monkeys suffering under the oppressive rule of a rival tribe. Using rhythmic taps as a means of communication, players will assemble the Mofongo tribe and lead it on a quest for "freedom, happiness, and bananas." Jungle Rumble will be playable at PAX Prime's Indie Mega Booth next weekend in Seattle.
