Mario Kart 8 enjoyed a great attach rate with shipments of 2.82 million by the end of June, but the vast majority of its success can be attributed to existing Wii U owners and not new buyers. Nintendo shipped 510,000 units of its home console across April to June, a quarter in which the company endured a 9.924 billion yen net loss, which converts to $97.2 million. The systems's total shipments as of June 30 rose to 6.68 million; Nintendo still expects to hit its target of 3.6 million units across the fiscal year, which would take the console to 9.77 million by March 2015. The company admitted in May the Wii U "still faces a challenging sales situation," and it will look to build off the success of Mario Kart 8 with the launch of Super Smash Bros. and its set of Amiibo figurines this fall.

Nintendo is releasing two Kirby: Triple Deluxe mini-games as standalone downloadables in Japan, including the Smash Bros-like Kirby Fighters Z. The eShop sucks in the multiplayer fighter along with rhythm platformer DeDeDe's Drum Dash on July 23, priced 750 yen each (around $7.38.) It's not known if Nintendo will spit them out onto Western 3DS systems. A Nintendo of Europe spokesperson told Joystiq "nothing has been announced for Europe to date so there's nothing further we can share at the current time." To check out trailers for the new standalones, roll on past the break.

  • UK Charts: FIFA 14 back in the lead, Minecraft PS3 debuts 3rd

FIFA 14 is the most successful FIFA yet in terms of the UK charts, having now held the No. 1 spot for a series-leading 12 weeks. It scraped over the line too, after beating Titanfall by a few hundred sales according to sales-compiler Chart Track. If you think that's a bit too much dominance, then how about this: Four of this week's top five games are from the FIFA and Minecraft series. Except there's only one Minecraft, I hear you cry, but the UK charts denotes the new Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition as separate from last year's Xbox 360 Edition. That means Minecraft PS3 is the highest-charting debut in third place, just ahead of Minecraft Xbox 360 and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. There are some big upcoming games that should split up the pack, such as Mario Kart 8 and Watch Dogs, but one new release that failed to do so was Kirby: Triple Deluxe. The puffball's platformer only debuted in 16th, making it the second first-party 3DS game in a row to fall short of the UK top ten after Mario Golf: World Tour. [Image: EA]

  • This is why Kirby looks angry on US box art

Promotional art in the United States featuring Kirby has always had an angry tilt, while the character is nothing but lovable pink puffball smiles in his native Japan. According to Kirby: Triple Deluxe director Shinya Kumazaki, a "strong, tough Kirby that's really battling hard is a more appealing sign of Kirby" for North American audiences. "For the Japanese versions we are, at [Kirby series developer] HAL, involved in everything throughout development, including the package design. The most powerful image of Kirby is that cute image, we think that's the one that appeals to the widest audience," Kumazaki told GameSpot. Kumazaki says that a cute Kirby has better appeal in Japan, where the character's "cuteness is his biggest draw." "Feedback and insight" to Kirby developer HAL from Nintendo of America, which controls promotional materials for the region, points to a region that prefers marketing materials and box art with an edgier character. Despite this, Kumazaki believes that the decision to adjust Kirby's attitude "depends on the title." Kirby: Triple Deluxe launches on the 3DS on May 2. In his review, Joystiq's Danny Cowan said it "doesn't succeed on all fronts, but the majority of its campaign is a joy to play." [Image: Nintendo]

  • Kirby: Triple Deluxe review: Maximum pink

Kirby's an adventurous little guy, taking frequent breaks from his side-scrolling roots to explore other genres, often to great success. His experimental efforts, like Kirby: Canvas Curse and the recent Kirby Mass Attack, have informed subsequent games in the series, and even his traditional platforming quests frequently stand out as wildly original and creative. Kirby: Triple Deluxe is the pink puffball's latest platformer, following in the grand tradition of classics like Kirby's Adventure and Kirby Super Star. Compared to previous games in the series, Triple Deluxe takes a great step forward in terms of complexity, as Kirby is armed with a greater variety of enemy-absorbing powers and attacks than ever before. Though Triple Deluxe will be familiar territory for those who played through Kirby's recent outings on the Nintendo Wii, the package still stands out as a high point in the series, thanks to its briskly-paced platforming and refined gameplay mechanics.

  • Europe gets pink-and-white 2DS alongside Kirby: Triple Deluxe in May

Pink is clearly the color du jour for the 2DS, after Nintendo unveiled a new pink-and-white livery that's launching alongside Kirby: Triple Deluxe on May 16. Europe's pastel portable looks a bit like an inverted version of the peach-pink 2DS heading to North America. As the box art shows, the 2DS doesn't come with Kirby: Triple Deluxe included, even though the rosy-cheeked puffball is a color match - that means it's priced £110 in the UK. You can complete the look by getting a new £8 silver 2DS carrying case, also due on May 16. [Image: Nintendo of Europe]

  • Kirby: Triple Deluxe includes Kirby Fighters, Dedede's Drum Dash modes

Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the pink puffball's upcoming 3DS game, features a Super Smash Bros.-like mulitplayer mode, as well as a rhythm platforming mode starring King Dedede. Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata revealed the modes in this morning's Direct broadcast, but didn't offer a western release date, and the game remains pinned to a 2014 window. As for the new modes, The Smash-like one is imaginatively called Kirby Fighters, and it's based around 10 of the hero's copy abilities (the main game offers 20 including four new ones). Kirby Fighters can be played alone (presumably with bots), or with up to three other players, although it wasn't noted which of local and/or online play it supports. Meanwhile, Dedede's Drum Dash features Kirby's regal rival in a rhythm platformer. King Dedede bounces on drums across the two 3DS screens, with players tapping buttons in time to music to help him avoid enemies and collect coins. While Iwata made mention of high scores, it wasn't noted if Dedede's Drum Dash supports leaderboards or any other online components. While the game proper remains without a release date in the West, it's only a few weeks away from hitting Japan on January 11, which hopefully augurs for further details soon.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe will be one of the Japan's first new releases of the coming year, when it hits retail shelves there on January 11. The deliciously-titled 3DS platformer has a 2014 window in North America, but for reference, the last three Kirby games headed west within a few months of being released in Japan.

  • New Kirby 3DS game is called Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Nintendo confirms

Hidden in a press release beneath all the Nintendo Direct news are the words Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the confirmed title of the puffball's new 3DS game. That title was originally just for Japan after the game's reveal last month, but now it's the moniker in North America too. Also, it took me a full 46 seconds to work out why that title is oh so clever. Change the Triple to a number and the Deluxe to its first letter... yup, see? Clever, clever Nintendo. Apart from the new title, there's not much more to go on. Triple Deluxe looks to be a fairly typical Kirby 2D platformer, with its first trailer showcasing some familiar powers as well as the ability to quickly jump to and fro between near and far planes. One thing we do know: It's due sometime next year.
