This week on XBLA in Brief, we take Dash of Destruction for a spin. As you've no doubt heard by now, Dash of Destruction is available for free on Xbox Live Arcade. The reason: it's a sponsored game that was primarily created to help sell Doritos. No seriously, you can see the word Doritos right there on the title screen. So, how does Dash of Destruction stack up to that other free advertising game on XBLA? On the other, we have a new multi-directional shooter by the name of PowerUp Forever. Find out if either one is for you by watching the latest episode of XBLA in Brief above. We also have a brand new feature this week. Below you will find the Xbox Live Marketplace links to the trial versions of each game. So, if you decide you'd like to give one of them a go on your Xbox 360, you can queue it up for download without even leaving your computer. How sweet is that? Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday is upon us, and that means it's time for some new games. This week, we're treated to the Q? Entertainment puzzler Meteos Wars and multi-directional shooter PowerUp Forever from Namco Bandai. The former has made a long journey all the way from the Nintendo DS and the latter ... has power-ups. Should you desire, you can pick them both up for 800 Microsoft Points. If you've been playing (deep breath) Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix lately, chances are you've been positively rocking out to the revamped soundtrack. As it turns out, Capcom actually partnered with Overclocked Remix, a website that specializes in remixing game music, to create the soundtrack for SSFIITHDR. Gamers from all over the planet supplied the tracks for the soundtrack, and now OC Remix is giving away the entire soundtrack for free. That's precisely zero dollars. The soundtrack is being offered both as a full album download and as individual MP3s of each track. So, head over to OC Remix and get yourself some free music.Note: As of this writing, we've had trouble getting the OC Remix site to load.[Via Capcom-Unity]

We know what you're thinking. A bear? Teamed up with a bird? It sounds insane, we know. Somehow, though, somehow it works. Joining a bear with a bird seemingly creates the perfect platforming duo. Honestly though, is any stranger than an Italian plumber taking out his wrath on sadistic, sentient mushrooms? Now a bear riding a plumber, that would be weird. Find out why the bear / bird combo works very well in the latest episode of XBLA in Brief, in which we take a look at Banjo Kazooie. After the title was delayed -- presumably so those who pre-ordered Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts could feel a little more special -- Microsoft has announced that the original Banjo Kazooie will finally be headed to Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday. The game will be available for the price of 1200 Microsoft Points (been seeing that price a lot lately, haven't we?) and features Banjo and his pal Kazooie in the original game that launched the series way back on the Nintendo 64. Apart from being one of the more well-known platformers, Banjo Kazooie also offers connectivity with Nuts & Bolts, allowing gamers to unlock new content in the XBLA game by playing its console-bound cousin.

This is it folks. After a long, long wait, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is finally here. If you've been waiting for the game to finally release, chances are that you don't really need this episode of XBLA in Brief to sway you one way or the other. Still, we've pledged ourselves to provide this service and, dang it, that's what we intend to do. After its official announcement well over a year ago, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is finally landing on Xbox Live Arcade. For the always controversial price of 1200 Microsoft Points, you get a completely redrawn cast of characters and a while slew of reworked backgrounds. Let's not forget the game comes with some revamped tunes as well. Oh, and of course there's the (reportedly) improved netcode too, which will hopefully smooth out those online wrinkles.Go get the trial game and tell us what you think. Was it worth the wait? For that matter, is it worth the scratch? Basically, is it the best around?

    11.12.2008

After no announcement earlier this week and the discovery of three new titles on the Arcade Hits page on Xbox.com, we were fairly certain there would be no new Xbox Live Arcade title this week. After checking the Marketplace this morning, our suspicions have been confirmed. There is no new title, but Worms, Feeding Frenzy, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 have all had their prices slashed to 400 Microsoft Points. So, we've got a hardcore fighter, a casual fish eating simulator and one of the best party games around all for only five bucks each. It's not new, but it's not bad if you've ever thought about picking one of these up.

Last week, Microsoft announced that Ninjabee's upcoming city builder A Kingdom for Keflings will be the first Xbox 360 game to allow players to play as their own Avatar. We spoke with Ninjabee following the announcement and now we have some exclusive new screens and a new trailer showcasing Avatars in A Kingdom for Keflings. Whether you decide to help your Keflings construct their village or just punt them like footballs is up to you. Somehow, we imagine the former is more likely to get your Keflings to dance at your feet, though. Check out the new trailer embedded above and the new screens in the gallery below. Also, Ninjabee's logo, the ninja bee, needs his own game. Period.%Gallery-28993%

  • Worms, UMK3, Feeding Frenzy now on XBLA Hits page [update]

Update: Yup. No new game on XBLA this week. These new Arcade Hits are all we get. Microsoft has yet to make any official announcements, but it looks like some new Xbox Live Arcade Hits are headed to our favorite download service. Three new titles have appeared on the official Xbox.com Arcade Hits page: Feeding Frenzy, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and Worms. All of them are listed at a new price of 400 Microsoft Points ($5), half of their original 800 Point price. We checked Xbox Live Marketplace and all three titles are still listed at their original price, so right now all we're really waiting for is an announcement from Microsoft. Given that Wednesday is the day that Xbox Live Arcade announcements are made, we wouldn't be suprirsed if these new discounts are announced today or tomorrow. We'll update this post when we have new information. After all, Worms + Friends = Party.

  • Capcom on Talisman cancellation

    11.07.2008

After quietly canceling the XBLA version of Talisman way back in August, GiantRealm has posted an article detailing what went wrong with the game's development. Adam Boyes, Director of Production at Capcom Entertainment, explains that the problem arose late in development, when the team realized some early decisions weren't panning out. Boyes said the team realized that many gamers wouldn't be wiling to sit down for a 3-5 hour online game and, because the game is turn based, players would literally be doing nothing 80% of the time in a 6 player game. Of course, if you're stuck in a game where no one is using a headset, things get even worse.Unfortunately, by the time these problems were recognized, the team didn't have enough time or money to fix them. We all know the rest. Still, Boyes says that a Talisman game "will be made" and that Capcom will be more than willing to share its lessons with the creators.[Via Joystiq]

click to enlarge Gamerscore Blog has announced that A Kingdom for Keflings, the upcoming XBLA game from NinjaBee, will be available on November 19, the same day as the release of the New Xbox Experience. More importantly, GSB has announced something about as surprising as something that isn't surprising at all: Avatars can be used as playable characters in the game. You may recall that the game was shown though not mentioned in a recent video about Avatars. In the game, players can use their Avatar as the giant character, ordering their Keflings around and building their city. As you can see in the screen above, up to four players can play in the same game. The announcement also adds that A Kingdom for Keflings "works perfectly" with the NXE's party system. We hope party experience is a bit more seamless than it is with older 360 games.A Kingdom for Keflings will launch on November 19 for 800 Microsoft Points.

    10.29.2008

During our extensive video tour of the New Xbox Experience, we managed to miss that an old feature has actually been removed. Specifically, we're talking about the ability to download all Xbox Live Arcade games automatically. We're not sure how many people actually use the feature, but for those that like to at least try every XBLA game (or those that started a weekly video series about XBLA), it was pretty handy. When MTV's Stephen Totilo asked Microsoft's John Schappert about the removal of the feature, Schappert replied, "You actually use that?" While the reason why the feature has gone missing remains a mystery, Totilo was told "it may come back in a future release." We'll just have to wait an see. Get your own hands on the otherwise feature-packed NXE when it debuts next month.
