Google wants to bring business savvy to local news outlets
Google has announced a new project that will attempt to develop sustainable business models for local news publications. As part of its ongoing Google News Initiative, the company is partnering with the UNC's Hussman School of Media and Journalism, LION Publishers and Douglas K. Smith on a research initiative called Project Oasis. Together, the organizations say they will develop a database of local digital publications in the US and Canada. NBC's LX aims to provide local news for younger viewers

Variety reported today that NBCU's local TV group will be launching LX, which will deliver original local news stories targeted at younger audiences. Google’s plan to improve local news will start in Youngstown, Ohio
Today, Google announced that Youngstown, Ohio, will be the first city in its Compass Experiment, a joint venture with newspaper publishing company McClatchy to revive local news. The announcement couldn't be more timely, as Youngstown's long standing publication The Vindicator will close its doors on August 31st.
