  • R-Kaid-R packs portable arcade cabinet in a sleek wooden box

In case you ever felt proud about the paint job you gave your controllers or something, Swedish craftsman Love Hulten has created the R-Kaid-R, a portable homage to arcades that manages to look sleek and old fashioned at the same time. The R-Kaid-R's wooden clamshell design hosts an 8" LCD screen and a mono speaker above an arcade-style layout, complete with nine face buttons, a screw-in joystick and a stereo port for headphones. Its hardware supports titles from the Game Boy Advance, PlayStation and predating consoles, along with some PC titles like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D. Hulten estimates that on a full charge, the arcade away from home can withstand about 8 hours of play. While the R-Kaid-R is a joy to look at, you can always add it to your on-the-go collection for a, uh ... minor charge of $3,397 (€2,499). While that includes a manual, a 16 GB SD card with pre-installed OS, a USB charging cable and a copy of Cave Story, it doesn't include the carrying case seen in the video, which is a separate $176 (€239) purchase. At least you can choose your R-Kaid-R's appearance from one of five colors? [Thanks, Love!] [Image: Love Hulten]

  • Swedish designer's R-Kaid is a gorgeous, vintage-looking custom PC

Swedish designer and craftsman Love Hulten has shaped wood and metals into pure class with his "all-in-one" gaming system, R-Kaid Revelation. The gorgeous machine was crafted from walnut and copper, and features built-in peripherals and a backlit LCD screen that showcases the computer's components while asleep. Though the build was first revealed to the world in early December, it was only recently highlighted by culture site Boing Boing. The machine boasts a custom interface (with the ability to boot into Windows), over 10,000 pre-installed games, an Intel i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a previous-generation GTX 600 Series GPU. The build components won't pit it against more modern horsepower, but it's housed inside a case that would look right at home in my parent's living room. For more of Hulten's work, which includes plenty of other gaming-related projects, check out his online portfolio.

We fell for Love Hulten's R-KAID-6 device, a custom-designed MAME machine made of interlocking handcrafted wooden pieces, back in 2011.Hulten has evolved the concept to add wireless controllers, a trackball accessory, and a built-in projector – all still encased in a custom, decorated wooden case that allows the joysticks to be stored on top. Hulten's designs show us what it looks like when game machines are designed not for efficiency by engineers, but for beauty by artisans. The result turns out to be pretty efficient in its own way.

Finally, a console you wouldn't want to hide inside a cabinet under your TV. Love Hulten's R-Kaid-6 is a beautiful custom-made wooden console that sort of resembles an Octorok. Unlike those weak Zelda enemies (as far as we know!) the R-Kaid-6 is built for MAME, with the Maximus Arcade interface installed, two custom-built joysticks that fit into a recess at the top when not in use, and a glowing red light at the front. It's highly unlikely you'll be able to get one of these for your home. While Hulten's website notes that some works are for sale, there's no indication as to whether this is one of them, and it's not exactly mass-produced anyway.

In a perfect world, you could have a cool, original retro gaming peripheral and impress the sort-of-snooty steampunk nerds at the same time. That day has arrived to do just that, as Love Hultén has created a new wooden video game console called the R-Kaid-6. Inspired by various retro game consoles, the R-Kaid-6 features a custom version of the Maximus Arcade front-end for emulators and runs on PC innards from 2001. The unit also sports customized cables and two arcade joysticks that can be stored in the top of the base unit when not in use. So far, there's no set price for the R-Kaid-6, though the website states that the creator can be contacted if you're interested in purchasing the works displayed. Take a look, and remember that even the most annoying Modern Warfare 3 opponent screaming epithets at you over Xbox Live has to respect retro gaming goodness in its purest form.

Do ya hate that slick, aluminum unibody design that you just shelled out a thousand plus smackers for? Looking for something that just screams alt-tech, not high-tech? Then please, feast your steampunky eyes on this beauty of a PC mod that'll fit perfectly alongside your Memaw's china closet. Crafted by Swedish art student Love Hulten, this wood-grained cabinet of wonders takes its design cues from "the 20th century and old hi-fi." Hiding under that well-varnished hood is a Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3 Mini-ITX motherboard with a 3.2GHz Core i3 500 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB HDD and a GeForce GTX 460 GPU and a log-fire power supply. Love's hybrid commode is up for sale, but you'll have to contact the artist himself to get pricing. Check the sources below for a few more shots, as well as a bit of inspiration from the last millennium.
