ICYMI: Lasers of the future will create an atmospheric lens
try{document.getElementById("aol-cms-player-1").style.display="none";}catch(e){}Today on In Case You Missed It: A new company called BAE Systems is touting its Laser Developed Atmospheric Lens tech, which aims to use particles in the atmosphere to make a big magnifying glass. They admit we are many years from actual application of the idea, but that doesn't make the video any less cool. Meanwhile NASA is booking rides on Russia's space transport vehicle, the Soyuz, through 2019, since SpaceX and Boeing are both behind on their plans for a vehicle to get American astronauts to the International Space Agency. iPhone camera mod for magnification: because you can
We've thought before how nice it might be to have some powers of magnification on the iPhone's cam... but are we going to go out and mod our unit? Probably not, but that doesn't mean we can't admire someone else's work. Taking various lenses and attaching them to the lid of a jar, the modder quite carefully built a contraption that looks a little "hobo Steampunk" to us, but we're still fairly impressed with this little gadget. RealView's V-Screen for PSP pledges to add depth where there is none
The original PSP was never the most svelte of handhelds, and we've generally not been fans of accessories that make it even bigger -- bulky battery packs and card readers and the like. So, the V-Screen from RealView already has one strike against it, since it looks larger even than the console itself. That it promises to do something impossible is a second strike, saying it can create "a fully 3 dimensional experience from the PSP screen" -- supposedly making all of your 2D games played on a 2D screen appear 3D. To us it looks a high-end version of those magnifying glasses we used to stick on our green, postage stamp Game Boy screens back in the day, and while we expect it to be just as effective, we'll reserve full judgment until the thing releases this fall and some reviews trickle in. That said, it doesn't look to be PSPgo compatible, and that could be the third strike right there. [Via Joystiq]
