  • Mario Golf: World Tour review: In the rough

Nintendo continues to infuse its standalone sports games with the whimsy and vibrant stylings of the Mushroom Kingdom to make the mundane feel a little magical, and if there's any sport that needs an excitement elixir, it's golf. I love the nuances and deliberate pace of the sport, but I'm also not surprised at the eye rolls I receive from my wife when I'm captivated by a Sunday afternoon showdown on TV. Add some warp pipes, candy-coated terrain and power-ups, however, and the action comes off much friendlier and perkier. A decade removed from its last entry on Game Boy Advance, Mario Golf returns with Mario Golf World Tour on Nintendo 3DS, which maintains the winning foundation of past entries – accessible golf set against colorful backdrops – with the addition of newer amenities like online matches and tournaments. But while World Tour hits most of the fundamental elements with success, it comes off as content to coast by on the bare minimum needed to justify a modern-day reemergence. This proven formula, once so potent in its handheld incarnations, can't help but feel a bit paltry.

  • Joystiq Weekly: VR walker Omni, Hitman Go review, Mario Golf's season pass and more

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. Okay, we have to admit that the Omni, a motion-tracking platform that associates real-life walking with in-game movement, is kind of ridiculous, right? Yeah, we do and we will - as long as we can also acknowledge how interesting the concept is. Sprinting in reality to hurry down a virtual hallway probably won't be as quick as strafing with arrow keys, but the tradeoff sounds worthwhile. Pairing Omni with the Oculus Rift would bring us closer to the hectic deathmatch action of games like Halo 4, but we could also do rhythmic leaps through stages of Runner 2 or wildly-dangerous imitations of Mirror's Edge's parkour. Hmm ... maybe Omni should be bundled with life insurance. We can ponder the benefits of treadmill controllers together, but if your brain needs a break from all that, there's plenty of gears to switch to after the break. Between a glimpse of the new Ace Attorney game, reviews for NES Remix 2 and Hitman Go, and an exploration of morality systems like those found in the Infamous and Mass Effect series, there's lots to think about beyond how physical our video games could be in a few decades.

This week's eShop update is a big tease. NES Remix 2? Not out 'til tomorrow. Child of Light? Next week, on April 29. At least you can play Mario Golf: World Tour today - in a demo. As for what's launching today, there's the last of April's Game Boy Advance games in Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, and a few other bits and bobs too - as ever, we've got the full list of new releases after the break. Finally, there's also a new two-week sale on Joindots' games, including Secret Agent Files: Miami and 3D MahJongg. [Image: Ubisoft]

Nintendo revealed it's taking a swing at season passes with Mario Golf: World Tour, after it announced the 3DS game's DLC schedule today. The arcadey sim gets three packs across May and June, each offering two 18-hole courses and a new playable character. Admission to each one is priced $6/£5.39, but the season pass bundles the lot at $15/£10.79. Brits do get the greater handicap but it's a limited-time offer; after May 31 it reverts to £13.49. The triforce of DLC tees off alongside the game on May 2, starting with the Mushroom Pack which features the pink-as-can-be Toadette. Nabbit steals into the Flower Pack later in the month, while Super Mario Galaxy princess Rosalina features in the June-bound Star Pack. If you're wondering what Gold Mario's doing there, he's just chilling. Oh, and he's a bonus for anyone who buys all three packs, whether that's separately or via the season pass. For a standard membership, the World Tour clubhouse grants you access to 10 different courses comprising 126 holes. Also, going by Nintendo's site, players can expect a roster of 16 characters that includes traditional favorites like Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad, as well as the likes of Daisy, Waluigi, Birdo and Boo. That's the ghost thing, not the girl from Monsters Inc (sadly). In addition to single-player shenanigans, players can take to busier fairways in both local and online multiplayer, or compete in regional and worldwide tournaments. [Image: Nintendo]

You could play golf like they do in the boring old PGA Masters, or you could do whatever it takes to reach the green in as few shots as possible. In this Mario Golf: World Tour trailer, Mario and friends opt for the latter, using items to go the distance before they just tap it in. [Image: Nintendo]
