click to enlarge Although PlayStation 3 owners are currently enjoying an exclusive demo for the upcoming digital release, Microsoft was showing off Marvel vs. Capcom 2 behind closed doors at this year's E3 Expo to promote the upcoming Summer of Arcade lineup. If you've played Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in the past, you'll know what to expect. However, in our opinion, the game loses a lot of what made the original fun by hitting the XBLA service completely unlocked. Meaning, all 56 characters are available to players as soon as they click 'Purchase Full Version.' Part of the charm of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was collecting points to purchase the insane number of unlockable items -- ranging from costumes to characters themselves. Sadly, from what we've played of the XBLA/PSN revamp ... Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has lost a lot of its charm.%Gallery-51288%

  • Capcom: Marvel vs. Capcom 3 'not part of deal' to re-release MvC2

If you're thinking the pending digital release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is any indication that the path is clear for "Marvel vs. Capcom 3," think again. "The short answer is no, that's not any part of this deal," Capcom's Seth Killian lamented to Joystiq at a media event yesterday. "What we're hoping is that if people get really juiced about this title, and we can show Marvel that there's a lot of heat behind this, then they'll open up the door for us to do something with '3,' which is something we'd love to do." For now, licensing issues are preventing further developments. The same is true for a North American release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. "It's a lot of 'dance with the lawyers' on that one," explained Killian. "The rights holders for Tatsunoko in Japan are one company, but in the U.S. it's ... 13 companies -- and some are very attentive and some are not." So if you've been holding your breath for this one, you might want to consider coming up for air.Killian also told Joystiq that Capcom is considering releasing Marvel vs. Capcom 2-branded arcade sticks (à la the popular SFIV controllers). "It's a discussion ... we would love to make it happen. If you saw the 'leak' of those MadCatz sticks, that was actually B.S. That was a complete fabrication, but it's something we would love to do."%Gallery-51288%

In reporting its Q1 2009 financial results, Marvel Entertainment has revealed a short release schedule for its upcoming licensed products, including those that require the frantic mashing of buttons. Though the dates are noted as being subject to change, the fine purveyors of POW! indicate that Capcom's PSN and Xbox Live Arcade release of cross-company brawler, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, is currently set for release on June 29, 2009. A quick flick through our Official Age of Apocalypse Calendar reveals that June 29th falls on a Monday, and since neither Xbox Live Monday nor PSN Monday exist, one may speculate that the game may be due sometime during the week of the 29th. We've asked Capcom for further information, though suspect that we'll receive little more than a 768-hit combo of non-commentary.Update: Says Capcom's Seth Killian: "That's the first time I've heard that date, and so far as I know, it's not correct." It's Marvel vs. Capcom ... on release dates!%Gallery-51288%Source -- Marvel Q1 2009 Report [Warning: PDF Link]

We've already had a peek at the various sprite filtering modes that can be optionally employed on Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom 2 port for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but as usual, one truly need to get a look at the game in motion to judge. Check out Joystiq's YouTube HD footage (embedded after the break) and see if that type of thing has any noticeable effect on the action.

With a demo already out (exclusively on PSN) for this summer's Marvel vs. Capcom 2 revival, we thought it would be a great idea to compare the game's three graphic filter options in glorious HD video.Originally, our excuse for making the video was to play MvC2 at work, but it turned out to be pretty informative. The filters -- which can be changed at any time-- start extremely "jaggy" in the classic mode, but get progressively softer on the eyes from crisp to smooth. In the end, the consensus around "the office" is that MvC2 is so fast paced, it won't matter which filter you have it set to. But for arguments sake, which filter do you prefer?%Gallery-51288%

Capcom, you clearly dropped the ball the first time around. The above trailer for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is just about the same as the trailer you already saw here, but with one important improvement: Stan Bush's "The Touch." We felt this trailer just had to be posted, as Stan's melodic interludes accompany the snikting and hurricane kicking so well. So, feast your eyes on the above footage from the PSN and XBLA brawler, and if you're a PS3 owner, download the demo already!%Gallery-51288%

Yes, even those of you in Europe, if you've got a US account. Other than that it's mostly DLC, including even more Disgaea 3 content. PSP owners have a Patapon 2 demo to try out in preparation for its imminent release. Making us a little more comfortable with the slow death of S-Video is the news that the Sega Dreamcast version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. With its introduction to the HD console era, Capcom's had to make some changes to the classic, although it isn't getting a full frame by frame rework like Super Street Fighter II HD Remix, producer Rey Jimenez blogged about some of the updates, including the three options for sprite filtering seen above to keep things sharp in 1080p. Also new for 2009 is widescreen support (the stages are still the same size) with notes from two prominent player promising "the same game, only prettier." The only real question now is which game is next?

Sorry, WiiWare fans -- it looks like Capcom's recently down-counted brawler Marvel vs. Capcom 2 isn't coming to your beloved download platform. Responding to a forum post inquiring as to why the fighter was deftly dodging the Wii, Capcom corporate head Christian Svensson said, "This is a downloadable play, not a retail play. We don't actually have any retail rights on this project. And there's no way to get anywhere near the WiiWare file size limit here."In other words, Capcom doesn't have the right to sell the game at retail outlets (Marvel is probably holding some rights there), nor is the game tiny enough to fit on the WiiWare service. Perhaps Marvel or Capcom, sure. But both of them? In one download? Now you're just being ridiculous.[Via GoNintendo]

One of the features shown in the screens that was curiously absent from the debut trailer is the team maneuver, which allows multiple characters to join the fray at the same time. The good news: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is coming to XBLA and PSN! Yay! The bad news (which may also be good news, depending on your feelings about Udon's redrawn Super Street Fighter II sprites): it won't be a full HD Remix, but will instead rely on graphical filters for the characters. The good news about the bad news: those filters are optional.Producer Rey Jimenez showed off the three sprite filtering options in a Capcom Unity blog post: classic (no filtering), smooth ("based off of 2X Bilinear filtering, but with some tweaks") and crisp ("based of off 3X Bilinear filtering, but it was also tweaked heavily") You can see the first screens of the game in our gallery (or in 1080p on Capcom Unity).Jimenez also introduced two expert MvC2 players, Magnetro and MikeZ, who thoroughly tested the game to find bugs that most of us wouldn't notice -- including bugs that were present in the PS2 and Xbox releases of the game.%Gallery-51273%

Remember the site rumored to be counting down to an announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network? Marvel's own news site appears to have confirmed what's going to be revealed when the clock hits zero: the game is making a comeback, as hoped. As revealed in the teaser trailer above, the classic cross-over fighter will hit both systems sometime this summer with online play. The footage isn't the best, but it looks like the game won't be getting a SSFIITHDR style high-def makeover for its return. We'll have more info when Capcom spills its details any minute now ...Update: As expected, Capcom has made the return of MvC2 official via Capcom Unity. The biggest news: a demo of the game will be available on PSN this week (most likely during the usual update on Thursday, April 30. Christian Svensson, the company's VP of strategic planning and business development, calls this the "definitive version" of the classic fighter, providing some details to back up his claim. In addition to the already confirmed online play, it's been revealed that the game is based on the Sega Dreamcast release, features HD upscaling and widescreen options, and will support custom soundtracks on both platforms. Also, all 56 characters will be "unlocked" from the beginning. No word yet on a 360 demo, but we've dropped Capcom a line for comment. [PlayStation.Blog confirms the demo is exclusive to PSN.][Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

  • Possible Marvel vs Capcom 2 teaser site countdown

    04.21.2009

The demand for a downloadable release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 is high; we don't need to tell you that. When the game was rated by the ESRB, we found ourselves as giddy as a Sentinel hunting down rogue mutants. Don't even get us started on a possible teaser site for the game: tu4ar.com.The domain appears to be a reference to the catchy character select song "Take You for a Ride," and further inspection of the site reveals a giant "2" (in the background of the countdown clock), which is similar in font to the Marvel vs Capcom 2 logo. The teaser countdown appears to imply that in 6 days the site will evolve into a real web site, complete with stuff to click and actual content. (Presumably, this countdown could coincide with a press embargo being established at CAPTIVATE09 this week.)That's not all, though. There are two telling domains that are connected to the URL in question: http://dev02.capcomusa.net/ and http://dev02.capcomusa.net/mvc2gmt/. If you click the latter link, the same teaser from tu4ar.com shows up. Oh, and a Capcom Unity tweet and recent auction offer further evidence as to the creator of tu4ar.com.Still, it's important to remain skeptical. All of this evidence -- compelling as it may be -- is by no means official confirmation. We'll update just as soon as the countdown expires and Capcom announces ... well, whatever it's going to announce.[Via TheGameReviews]

  • Take this Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Achievement list for a ride

Xbox360Achievements has just given us a bit more reason to believe that an HD Remix of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is on the way -- or at least some kind of XBLA version. It's not hard to guess what kind of evidence would be found at that particular site: Achievements! The site has a list of twelve Achievements for the frantic crossover fighter, worth 200 points total. Some of the challenges seem super fun, like "Berserker Barrage: Perform a 200 hit combo. (Multiplayer)" and Achievements based on creating X-Men, Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, and Avengers-only teams. We just hope, then, that these awesome achievements, and the new version of this awesome game, are real. If Capcom is able to get permission from Marvel for a re-release, we have renewed hope for its ability to deal with all the Tatsunoko license holders. The retailer ShopTo reportedly provided another item of evidence, in the form of listings for a "Marvel Vs. Capcom Tournament Edition Arcade Stick" for Xbox 360 and PS3, to be released in July. The listing has been removed from the site, and Mad Catz hasn't responded to our inquiries about it.We've embedded the character select music after the break in case you've managed to get it out of your head in the nine years since the game's original release.

Capcom's talking about HD remixing some more titles following the success of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Capcom VP Christian Svensson tells VideoGamer that not every game needs it, but the company is going to "potentially" apply the formula to other fighting games in the company's catalog. Next time, however, it plans do it "better, based on what [it] learned" -- which we'll take to mean cutting down development time. When asked if Marvel vs. Capcom 2 would be HD-ified, Svensson commented that it's probably the title fans request the most, but he has no news to share about that. We know retro Mega Man is en vogue, but an HD remix of Mega Man 2 could be interesting.%Gallery-9066%

Fighting game fanatics, wonderful news comes courtesy of our good friends at Capcom: EVO 2009 is on! For those of you who aren't in the know, EVO is a huge fighting game tournament open to gamers from around the world. It's also an awesome search term on YouTube. This year's tournament will go down in Las Vegas from July 17 to July 19 and will feature a variety of Capcom games, as well as some other notable fighters like Soulcalibur IV and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core. The Capcom games to be featured include: Street Fighter IV Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (single and teams) Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Street Fighter III: Third Strike (2 vs 2 teams) Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom Sounds like quite the tournament, and we're very glad to see Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom getting some love. We're still holding out hope that it'll get localized some day, as unrealistic as that may be.[Via Capcom Blog]

Capcom has been on a roll this generation. First we got games like Dead Rising and Lost Planet which launched strong new IPs. Then the announcements started to hit. An Okami port for the Wii. Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop. Resident Evil 5 (which, judging by its recent demo, seems to be shaping up nicely). Street Fighter 4. Mega Man 9. Granted, not all of those games are making their way to the Wii, but on the whole they represent good times for gamers. Does it really get much better than that? Maybe it does.As if the decade-in-the-making Street Fighter 4 wasn't enough to reinvigorate Capcom's fighting game base, the company decided to once again visit its vs. series with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Just launched in Japan, the new fighter already has adventurous message boarders and bloggers scrambling for imports and Twilight hacks, while the rest of us pray nightly for the miracle of resolved licensing issues and a domestic release. Update: Jonah F. pointed out that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a backwards compatible title, meaning there there's a possibility it will release as an Xbox Original versus the XBLA. We're cheering for the XBLA.Marvel vs. Capcom fanboys rejoice! Word on the collective internet street is that the old-school fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will be releasing to the Xbox Live Arcade or as an Xbox Original in the not too distant future. The rumor stems from the game's listing on the ESRB ratings search website where the game was tagged with both Xbox 360 and PS3 descripters. Though, since its discover, the listing has mysteriously disappeared. No matter, we have enough photographic proof (see above) as we need. So, fanboys, how excited would you be for some HD Marvel vs. Capcom 2 XBLA action? [Via Game Stooge]

A NeoGAF member who hobbies as ESRB archive scavenger has stumbled upon an update for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 that lists the game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game, a frenetic 3-on-3 arcade bralwer from 2000 (and probably one of the main reasons you keep a Sega Dreamcast around, assuming you didn't pick up the PS2 or Xbox One version), seems like a perfect fit for Xbox Live Arcade or PS Network. We've reached out to Capcom for more information.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

We've got bad news for these eBay sellers -- a poster on NeoGAF noticed that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has been rated for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. Presumably, the title will be a downloadable one on the PS Store and XBLA. The ESRB has been a good source of leaks in the past, so we have no reason believe otherwise in this instance. With the a total of 56 playable characters in the game spanning two vast fictional universes, hopefully Capcom doesn't plan on charging us $1.99 per character download.
