Are you ready to shop and roll? As we reported last week, the 14th Street ("Meatpacking") Apple Store in NYC is due to open this Friday, and official Apple e-vites went out earlier today. New York City's fourth Apple retail outlet (three in Manhattan, one on Staten Island -- no love for Brooklyn, Apple? What's up with that?) will be opening to the public at 6 pm on Friday 12/7. The store will be open 9 am to midnight Mon-Sat and 9-7pm on Sundays. As was noted last week, the subway icons above are a bit misleading, as none of those lines actually gets you especially close to the store -- the 1 stops at 14th Street and 7th Avenue, but then it's a long walk into a stiff Hudson River wind to get to 9th Ave. and the store location. The closest subway is actually the E train (or A/C/L... heh heh), at 14th and 8th Ave. Be sure to send us your pictures and impressions if you head over for the opening! Thanks Rich, Brian and everyone else who sent this in

Oooh, the anticipation: New York's third Apple retail store now appears set to open on December 7, just in time for the shopping season (well, midway through Hannukah, but I forgive!). Backing up recent reports at ifoapplestore.com, reader David sent us a picture of the store construction wrap that leaves little doubt. Will you be at the 14th Street store opening? We'll try to send our agents and snap some pictures. Thanks David!

Let's clear something up: as odd as it sounds, there really truly is a hip, fashionable and glamorous New York City neighborhood called "the meatpacking district." That's what it is: many meat wholesalers and associated businesses are located on Manhattan's far West Side, hemmed in by long-gentrified Chelsea to the north and the West Village to the south.Mixed among the meat markets are other meat markets: hot bars like Lotus and Hogs & Heifers call the MPD home, and apparently soon so will Apple's new Manhattan store. It's expected to occupy the former Western Beef supermarket building at 401 West 14th Street (Google Maps | Google Earth links) with a massive new outlet. The New York Post reported that Apple's lease for the site includes 32,000 square feet of space, spread across three floors of the low-rise building. If Soho is the boutique, and 5th Avenue is the Tiffany's, then 14th Street is going to be the Costco of Apple Stores (except, of course, for the bargain pricing). Personally, I'm just thrilled that there's finally going to be an Apple Store I can visit on my lunch break.[via Apple 2.0]
