The recent resurrection of the retro-style role-playing game is exciting for many reasons, particularly an increased variety of different, new games. But trying to create new "old-school" games has tensions of its own, notably having to balance old-fashioned RPG conventions – user-generated parties, a heavy emphasis on both combat and exploration – with modern conventions like accessibility and more detailed character stats and skills. Fortunately for the state of the genre, Might and Magic 10: Legacy manages to find that balance extraordinarily well, and could serve as a model for other games dealing with similar issues. Unfortunately for Might and Magic 10, it struggles with many other things.

Limbic Entertainment's Might and Magic X: Legacy will launch on January 23, publisher Ubisoft has announced. The game will be available for PC, through both digital distribution and retail channels in Europe; in North America, it'll only be available as a download. Rather than follow the events of Might and Magic IX, Might and Magic X: Legacy is the direct sequel to Might and Magic Heroes VI, set in the world of Ashan. The turn-based first-person role-playing game has been in Early Access on Steam since August and utilizes a class-based system for its characters. Update: Ubisoft has amended its announcement to note that the game will launch on January 24 for the UK, but will still see a January 23 release for the rest of Europe.

The first update for Ubisoft's Might And Magic X has arrived, bringing with it "a large list of enhancements" - most notably, four new character classes. Alongside the addition of Chinese and Japanese language support for Might And Magic X, the patch also extends the game's day/night cycle, gives players the ability to immediately compare new items against those they have equipped, and fixes "over 100 bugs." The game's new classes include Mercenary, Shaman, Druid and Scout characters. Ubisoft notes that downloading the patch is as simple as firing up your Steam client and allowing Valve's digital distribution platform to pull down and apply the update. Keep in mind however, that due to the number of changes in this patch Ubisoft warns players that save files created prior to the patch may no longer function.

Might and Magic is coming back. Not Heroes of Might and Magic or Clash of Heroes, but straight up vanilla Might and Magic. Three days after teasing an announcement, Ubisoft has announced Might and Magic X Legacy (we're claiming dibs on the abbreviation "Might and Magic XL" right now), developed by Limbic Entertainment. In the classic tradition, Legacy is a single-player, first-person RPG with turn-based battles. The story puts you and your party of four characters in the city of Karthal, which "on the verge of secession, is prey to competing factions vying for its control," presumably vying through the placement of monsters everywhere.Brave adventurers who dare to enter PAX East will be able to see Legacy at the event this weekend.
