PS3 Slim: Mockup vs. reality
Click for more pictures of the real SlimNow that we've seen real pictures of the actual PS3 Slim (can you believe its real? The answer is yes. Yes, you can.), we thought we would compare it to the other PS3 Slim we've seen so much of -- the mockup that we saw again and again in retail listings and fake circulars. Above, the real PS3 Slim and NeoGAF user cakefoo's final mockup image. The fake is the one on the right. To put a fine point on it, cakefoo totally nailed it, to the point that we're wondering if he had the real thing on his desk as a reference. To put an even finer point on it, the logo is slightly bigger on the mockup, so it totally doesn't look anything like the real one. It's also really close to the early box image we saw -- but we can probably attribute that less to a prescient/detail-oriented Photoshopper and more to this box image probably being real. In fact, this box image and the in-production shell image were probably among the references used by cakefoo. %Gallery-70349%
Video: UK Folding Plug concept could flatten that bulky British adapter
Of all the AC adapters stuffed into your personal item when globetrotting, the plug used in Merry Old England must surely be the most cumbersome -- its three copper prongs flung to the extremes of a giant block of plastic. That Victorian holdover gets a major re-do with this UK Folding Plug concept. The two horizontal prongs rotate themselves in-line with the top, vertical one, and the body of the adapter then folds in half, resulting in a thickness of about 1cm. Interestingly the plug would still work in either position, with a slimline power strip envisioned to accept three of these slender lovelies at once. It's positively brilliant, but is just a concept at this point, and while we don't have any news to pass along about its likelihood for production, surely some manufacturer will watch the video after the break and start churning these out by the millions.[Via Pocket-lint]
First working CrunchPad prototypes a few weeks away
Michael Arrington's little experiment with consumer electronics is about to get real. The image above is the "near-final industrial design" of the man's CrunchPad with "first working prototypes" expected in another few weeks. Changes include a display now flush with the bezel and an 18-mm overall thickness thanks to the switch from plastic to aluminum. Inside we've got a Linux-based OS that boots direct to a Webkit-based browser. Michael says that the next public appearance will be at a special press event in July. However, as a man (in)famous for leaking other people's details ahead of official announcements, we wouldn't be surprised to see his vision of the ultimate couch computer make its way to the Internets before the big unveiling.
Sony's flexible OLED mockups
Sony hasn't gotten very far along with these units -- they're really just plastic shells -- but we like we're they're headed with it. They showed off a full-screen laptop (pictured), bendable e-reader, and Walkman bracelet concepts, all based around flexible OLED technology and built with "flexible bioplastics," along with the flexible display that going to power them all when they hit the market... in the year 2000.%Gallery-41877%
Free library of iPhone UI elements
iPhone developers! Do you need to make a quick mockup of your iPhone app for a presentation to venture capitalists? Don't struggle with creating your own UI elements. Geoff Teehan and crew have come up with a Photoshop PSD library full of UI assets that you can use to whip up a mockup of that killer app in time for the meeting with Mr. Moneybags.The PSD file is now at version 1.1, with the following improvements over the 1.0: changed document to 160ppi added number and symbol keyboard views added key press added address book alphabetical navigation widget added plus icon added new checked and unchecked elements Thanks to Geoff and friends for making this available to the iPhone development community at no cost.Yahoo also provides UI elements and wireframes for the iPhone on their developer network.[Via Daring Fireball]
It's-a Mario World: The Lost Premises

More cultural icon than game character, Mario has inspired everything from an animated television series to an extremely lengthy scarf. And probably a couple of other things in between, like cakes and stuff. Most recently, though, we've become infatuated with the thriving community over at VGBoxArt.com, a website dedicated to all kinds of game box artwork, both real and imagined.Barring occasionally subpar Photoshop skills, voluntary contributors to the site's public database have created an interesting collection of box art. Whether it be a reinterpretation of an existing cover or a completely new idea for a game, box art in the Wii category is worth checking out. Of course, the Mario-themed works take precedence in this humble feature, and we've assembled a new gallery showcasing the finer of the bunch. Click on and imagine the Mario games you'll likely never see. It's-a Mario World is a weekly feature in which the ubiquity of Nintendo's flagship character is celebrated: We'll incessantly ruminate about mustache wax, debate the curious whereabouts of the princess and covet the luminous power stars strewn about the galaxy. Is this Philips' next-generation Senseo?
Going out for coffee is so pre-recession, right? Either way, what you see above is a purported rendering of Philips' next-generation Senseo coffee system, which actually looks to be taking a step backwards in the design department. Not that we have anything against non-futuristic styling -- just an observation, is all. We know, at least a handful of you are already champing at the bit to yell "FAKE1one!," but really, who spends time creating a mockup of a java machine? And besides, aren't all the good designers working up those derisory iPhone nano images?[Thanks, GPFransen]
Nintendo Power DS mockup just a NIS advertising 'edit'
Remember the crazy ad in Nintendo Power (pictured above) that "hinted" at a DS redesign? (You should; we only posted about it two days ago, silly rabbits.) It turns out that the poor Photoshop job is nothing to speculate about, as NIS America only "placed screenshots on a DS backing to emphasize the platform, and edited them for effect." Now, we never took Marketing 101, but that seems like somewhat misleading advertising to us.NIS America's marketing guru Nao Zook apologized for any confusion that the picture may have caused, stating that there is no widescreen DS in the works (to her or the company's knowledge). Nintendo Power teases DS owners with a faux redesign [update]
Some are awful, some are amazing. Yes, the DS has precisely one gazillion "concept" models floating around the place, from fans who want their own particular quirks included with the inevitable possible redesign of the handheld. Nintendo Power has featured this image with an advertisement for Disgaea DS and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, and although it looks pretty cool, it's extraordinarily doubtful that one of the most talked-about rumors in the history of the DS has just awkwardly been confirmed via this image. Bogus, but neat! It's pretty much the same thing as the DS Lite now, only with bigger screens. Which is more or less exactly what the DS needs -- the rest is spot on. The fact that the bottom screen is misaligned with the top screen lends evidence to some guy taking one too many coffee breaks during his Photoshop training. Looks rad, not official -- redesign will probably come soon anyway. Watch this space for all E3 Nintendo revelations! Nintendo denies DS redesign ... again
As the clock ticks ever closer to E3, Nintendo continues to deny that a DS redesign is in the works. The only problem? They keep denying it, and that arouses the suspicions of naturally suspicious people -- naturally suspicious people like us.The company has already swatted away claims made by Enterbrain president Hirokazu Hamamura (not once, but twice), and has now issued another denial to GamesRadar, stating that "everything reported online is pure speculation and rumor," and that "a new model will be brought to the market when we can not offer new ideas with the current model." According to the firm, there's plenty of ideas left to "enrich the lives of people who own a Nintendo DS."Call us conspiracy theory nutjobs all you like, but there's actually a ton of very good reasons to believe a DS Lite follow-up is coming. Sales of the DS hardware are dropping in Japan as the PSP romps ahead (after getting a redesign itself), DS piracy is becoming increasingly widespread, and hey, Nintendo redesigns stuff. You wish for iWish, latest PSP mock-up
When we look at Mat Brady's convergence PSP mock-up, we can't help but laugh and get confused at the same time. This Frankensteinien combination of an iPhone, Windows Mobile device and PSP should be able to play games, browse the internet, play music, and cook you food. Nintendo of Japan carefully denies redesign rumors
Nintendo of Europe has already officially denied the rumor that a new version of the DS would debut at this year's E3. Possibly due to the fact that the most recent rumor originates from a credible source (Enterbrain's Hirokazu Hamamura), Nintendo of Japan has also chimed in, in a statement given to Yukan Fuji.Nintendo told the website that "We cannot comment on the specifics of what will be announced at E3, but at the very least there won't be anything like what Mr. Hamamura suggested, so we would like to clearly deny this." The statement continued "We're having a hard time understanding what kind of evidence [Mr. Hamamura] had for saying this."Conspiracy theorists can read Nintendo's aggressive denial as confirmation, of course. They didn't say there wouldn't be any new hardware, just that there won't be exactly what Mr. Hamamura suggested. Which means that the new hardware, if it exists, is something other than a minor upgrade. Would Nintendo really have such a hard time figuring out why Hamamura would predict a new hardware revision? It's been over two years since the last one, and if history is any indication, Nintendo is due to drop a new system on all the people who just bought one.%Gallery-20355%

There had already been some word that we would see a new DS model, but Nintendo of Europe dismissed those rumors as "pure rumor and speculation."January, 2006: Just a few days later, the DS Lite is officially announced.April, 2008: Hirokazu Hamamura of Enterbrain speculates on the big reveal of yet another DS model at this year's E3.April, 2008: Nintendo of Europe says the Enterbrain boss's comments are -- wait for it -- simply "rumor and speculation."Surely we're not alone in sensing a pattern, and it's a pattern that goes beyond even NoE's mirrored statements. The announcement of a redesign this year would match the GBA's timeline, so while we're not going to come out and say that it's likely we'll hear about a new DS this year, we won't be surprised if it happens. Quickorder app would keep iPod touch owners hooked on Starbucks
You're already well aware that Apple and Starbucks are buddy-buddy on at least some level, but this application would really cement their friendship. Quickorder, as you can probably imagine, would enable iPod touch users to swing by their local Starbucks, order up their favorite drink and avoid a good deal of that always questionable human interaction. MacBook Pro mockup contest results: the winner is you!
When we saw Spicu's Air-inspired MacBook Pro mockup last week, we asked if you could guys could do better. In terms of true-to-reality, the jury's still out until Apple hits us with the truth, but when it comes to "imagination" and "rainbows," you guys win in a landslide. Mocked-up Cinema display taunts us with an update
Are we going to see new Cinema displays by the end of the month? If so, they might look like this-- it's a nice-looking mockup posted by Ben over on the redrant forums. It is interesting that Cinema displays are almost starting to match up to the Beatles as the one thing we hope to get from Apple but never do. For years now, people have been hoping for an update to these things-- an installed iSight (that one's actually been "a lock" for years) and even a touchscreen display. But Apple hasn't budged-- the last time they updated the Cinemas, it was to drop the prices two years ago.Yup, it's been since then that a Cinema update has seemed to be just around the corner. You can only think of so many ways to update monitors, but it seems that Apple hasn't, so far, liked any of the ideas enough to put them on sale.Thanks, Jacob!
Fan-made PSP mockup is far sexier than the real thing will ever be
Good gawd y'all, we don't normally bother with fan renders and mockups, but excepting the awkward placement of the L and R triggers there's almost nothing about this PSP re-visioning that leaves us wanting. Gank that UMD, add some flash memory, and this is our be-all end-all fantasy portable gaming device -- that will likely never ever be made.[Via PSP Fanboy]
Here come the MacBook Pro mockups: get yours in before it's too late
It was inevitable, Apple's got a bit of a new laptop design direction in the MacBook Air, and nothing's going to stand in the way of the hordes of MacBook Pro Photoshops to follow. This one here is from spicu, and we're afraid it leaves some proportionality "to the imagination," but it's as good we've got so far. Think you can do better? Submit yours to contests at engadget dawt com with "MBP mockup" in the subject and we'll get a little gallery going. Optimists have Apple launching an update in February, and while that rumor might be a tad sketchy at the moment, there's no better time than the present to make a bid for Photoshop greatness. Optometrists think you shouldn't look at the computer screen so much. Oh, and there's nothing up for grabs for the best mockup, only pride.
Derailing the Apple touchscreen UMPC fantasy
So, if you've been paying any attention to tech news over the past few days, you have probably seen an Apple UMPC rumor floating around. The cats behind these latest whisperings seem to be super-duper whizzes with Photoshop and possess pretty active imaginations. Apparently, when they heard that people were speculating on a new type of touchscreen Apple device, they decided to whip up a couple of specs, the not-so-tasty image above, and a dust cloud of hype based off of a post made on a personal -- yet largely unread -- Apple news blog. It seems to have worked, save for one small problem: there isn't one verifiable or reliable piece of information in the whole thing. Maybe Steve Jobs will see the mock-up and decide to make this thing for real so we can all get a sweet new device -- but really just so the rumor-starters in question won't be proven wrong.
Is this the mylo 2?
So we were doing some followup research on yesterday's post about the upcoming mylo 2 Personal Communicator, when we happened to stumble upon the picture you see above, first posted in the beginning of October by qj.net. Part of an article sourcing someone claimed to be "close to Sony." this supposed mockup of the second-generation mylo immediately struck us as having an almost identical form factor to the FCC render that we just saw. And sure enough, as you can see after the break, a little resizing magic does indeed show the two outlines lining up pretty closely -- although not perfectly. Hmm...if this is in fact the production version of the mylo 2, what does that PlayStation-style typeface on the keyboard say about the device's features, we wonder?[Image courtesy of qj.net]
