What do you do when you're a burgeoning video game start-up that gets bought by Amazon for just under a billion dollars? Well, if you're game-broadcasting platform Twitch, you take over the Moscone Center in San Francisco for a few days and host all manner of panels featuring the top people in your community, game developers and maybe even a few musical guests. TwitchCon kicks off with a keynote address at 1 pm ET / 10 am PT today and you can watch it below via, you guessed it, a Twitch streaming window. In addition to the opening address the weekend's panels and interviews will be broadcast as well.

Back in March, at the tail end of the new iPad's launch, Apple CEO Tim Cook did something atypical. He encouraged us to expect even more from his company in 2012. From an outfit that rarely sets lofty expectations, that's saying something. Here at WWDC 2012, we're on hand to find out what exactly Apple has in the hopper. A deep dive into iOS 6 is guaranteed, but beyond that, all we have are rumors, smoke signals and few underground whispers. New MacBook Air / Pro laptops with Retina graphics? New iMacs with more pixels that are calculable by mere mortals? A new iPhone? Join us here at 10AM PT (that's 1PM on the right coast; pre-breakfast over in Kauai) for the blow-by-blow coverage you've come to expect! June 11, 2012 1:00 PM EDT

  • T-Mobile 1,900MHz 3G lights up Moscone West in time for WWDC, carrier swears it's a happy accident

T-Mobile may be planning to deploy 1,900MHz HSPA+ across the whole of its network, but it sure has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. The carrier has confirmed that it just recently started testing the refarmed frequency for 3G in San Francisco's Moscone Center West -- you know, where a certain Apple conference will be taking place next week. While no one is realistically expecting Apple to unveil a T-Mobile iPhone deal at WWDC, the testing will conveniently let anyone with an iPhone on T-Mobile (whether international or US unlocked) get data at full blast while they're learning about Xcode updates and Gatekeeper. A spokesperson tells 9to5 Mac that the expanded access is "just coincidental," and we're inclined to believe the statement. Just don't be caught off guard if San Francisco is blanketed in 1,900MHz T-Mobile 3G by the time a new iPhone model swings around. [Image credit: Scott Schiller, Flickr]

If you're excited about WWDC and want to get further in the mood, point your browser to T-GAAP, where you'll find a handful of Moscone images from both inside and outside the building. It looks like dubdub prep is in full-swing, as Moscone's workers are busy getting the site ready for next week's developer conference. We'll be covering all things WWDC right here on TUAW, so stay tuned.

MobileCrunch's Greg Kumparak snagged a photo of a covered banner inside the Moscone Center at WWDC. This may be the iconic "One Last Thing" that Steve Jobs pulls out of his hat at the end of the keynote. Could it be a new MacBook Air? A new Mac mini or something completely new that nobody has even considered yet?

It's five days of developer love in sunny San Francisco, and this year it starts on June 6th. As ever, Moscone West will be hosting Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, and this year we'll be seeing "the future of iOS and Mac OS" along with "more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers." Last time Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone 4 to a very willing world at large. Could its successor make an appearance this year? We'll be there live to tell you if and when it happens.

Tomorrow, June 10 (Thursday), yours truly will be camping out at the Metreon near the Moscone Center in San Francisco (Google map location here), specifically near Jillian's, in the little food court seating area (see pic, above). If you've got an app that you'd like to show the world -- and connect with our thousands of readers -- come say hi to us between noon and 5:30pm, and be prepared to show us your best! Also, the first twelve demos get a snazzy TUAW t-shirt, so that's nice, too. Come on down!

  • WWDC attendees: get the official app while it's hot

Many of the developers who are attending the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco this week are already on site, getting ready for the top development event of the year. Others are boarding trains, planes, and automobiles to get to WWDC 2010. One thing is for sure; they're all going to need to know what's going on once they get to the venue. Apple announced the availability of its official WWDC app last week. The app has a schedule of conference sessions from the start of festivities this morning until the closing bell on June 11 at Moscone West. The list is searchable and sorted by date, with a choice of events that are currently in progress or events happening later. The app has a favorites list that attendees can contribute to, and will provide updates on what's new and exciting throughout the conference. If you're not familiar with San Francisco, need to find parking, or need to know how to get between Moscone West and the Apple Store, there's a Places tab in the app with helpful information. The free app is only available to developers who are attending the conference. To download it, go to http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/app -- you'll need to log in with the account that you used to purchase your WWDC ticket. [via AppleInsider]

  • Rumor: Moscone schedule + "corporate event" = Verizon iPhone?

    by
    Ken Ray

    12.21.2009

Rumors and speculation are fun. Sometimes 2 + 2 = 4... and sometimes they don't add up to anything. Here's today's equation: Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2010 seems likely to happen at the end of June/beginning of July. The schedule for the Moscone Center, traditional home of WWDC, shows a "Corporate Event" running June 28 through July 2, 2010. This is around when Apple usually holds WWDC. "Corporate Event" has been the WWDC placeholder-name on the Moscone schedule in the past, at least until Apple was ready to say, "Hey everybody, we're having a party and here's when!" Additionally, Moscone is booked for all of June and most of July by other companies or organizations. Given that, it's likely that WWDC 2010 will be June 28 through July 2. That space on the calendar may be a big deal. If WWDC goes the way these things normally do, registration and other pre-conference fun will happen on Monday, June 28. The WWDC keynote will take place on Tuesday, June 29 -- three years to the day after the first iPhone was released. Maybe Apple had to settle for that week because the International Stem Cell Conference and the NACUBO Annual Meeting beat them to the dates they really wanted. But it's also possible that Apple is waiting until its exclusivity deal with AT&T ends -- the exact day its exclusivity deal ends -- before announcing an iPhone for Verizon, T-Mobile, or Sprint. Verizon's CTO made noise last week about his company being prepared for the iPhone in terms of network capacity, though he said nothing about an actual deal. Do you think 2 + 2 = anything this time? TUAW buddy Adam Jackson has posted pictures he took of a WWDC poster that's currently hanging in the Moscone Center. Bearing the phrase "One year later. Light-years ahead" and several flying app icons, it puts the iPhone front-and-center, as one would expect. Some folks are using Flickr's Notes feature to ID apps they recognize. Feel free to fill in the gaps.We expect Apple to demo and distribute a new, nearly-final build of Snow Leopard to developers, and at least announce a ship date for iPhone OS 3.0. It will be nice if we get a firm release date for Snow Leopard and a preview of new iPhone hardware, but we aren't holding our breath. Stay tuned to TUAW during the show for coverage and reaction to everything from WWDC.Of course, I wouldn't be a nit-picky jerk if I didn't mention that a year is a measure of time while a light year is a measure of distance. I wonder if the new iPhone will make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. Thanks Adam!

Spring is in the air, although we're in the midst of a blizzard here in the Denver area. That means one thing -- the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) is coming soon!Eric over at coreiphone.com sent us a tip this morning that shows that the WWDC is scheduled for June 8 - 12 at Moscone Center in San Francisco, and that the WWDC website is up and running. Purchasing your registration by April 25, 2009 saves you a cool US$300 and you'll only shell out US$1,295. After April 25th, the price goes up to $1,595.If you're planning on attending this year's premier Apple development event, be sure to register as soon as possible. Last year's WWDC sold out early, leaving many frustrated iPhone and Mac developers standing outside Moscone weeping uncontrollably. Act now -- operators are standing by!

  • Mac mini update with dual display support, banner unfurling rumored for Macworld festivities

We've got less than 48 hours until Apple's last Macworld keynote, and the rumor mill keeps hinting that Phil's gonna announce new Mac minis, which so far are purported to have the Macbook's NVIDIA chipset, aluminum casing, and an SATA optical drive that can be swapped out for a second HDD. Go ahead and add dual display support to that list, which is what Apple Insider is speculating based on their sources saying the new minis will sport both a mini DisplayPort and a mini DVI connector. Additionally, the site has managed to snap some shots from the Moscone Center of the expo being set up. There's a picture of a monitor showing what's presumed to be a live feed of the keynote rehearsal with a blurred figure that kind of looks like Al Gore, and inside the south hall there are several mysterious banners concealed in white cloth. So pretty much status quo, though is it just us or do the banners seem to look a little tired and thin this year?[Via Boy Genius Report]Read - Apple's next-gen Mac mini to get dual display supportRead - Macworld site rife with concealed banners

With apologies to Carole King: "Now it's too late, bayyybeee, now it's too late, though we really did try to make it..."If you were waiting until the last minute to get your reservations in for Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, aka WWDC 2008, you're out of luck. All available spaces at Apple's annual developer love-fest have been taken, so you'll have to wait until next year's event to get your fix of sessions and labs. That also means you're going to miss out on the Steve Jobs keynote address, which you'll hear about within minutes of it happening anyway. Don't procrastinate for WWDC 2009! Thanks to Chris C. for the tip!

Happy Monday, everyone! Joystiq and Massively are out in force on the streets of San Francisco this week covering the Game Developers Conference. Through we're bleary-eyed from late night Rock Band sessions and just starting on our daily caffeine allotment (hey, it's still morning in California!) we're here for you, covering all the news that's fit to virtually print. Today and tomorrow we'll be at the Worlds in Motion Summit, where it's all virtual worlds, all the time, and for the rest of the week we'll be out on the show floor searching out every tidbit of MMO news. Keep an eye out for the latest on all of your favorite games this week from GDC! Gallery: GDC 2008 Pre-show

Which is good news for you, the reader, but precisely the opposite for the poor developers that have to suffer our obscure questions, grating complaints and hideously broken social skills. It is the Game Developers Conference, after all, and not the Incessantly Whining Bloggers Conference (which totally sucks, FYI). Still, if the bustling city of San Francisco wishes to blame anyone for a recent invasion of laptop-wielding lunatics, it would have to point its sky-scraping finger straight at you. It's your fault, you know. It's your fault that we'll be here covering every aspect of the conference and your fault that you'll be reading constant updates throughout the week. You're also to blame for our early trip to an empty Moscone Center and the resulting post and image gallery. We hope you're happy.%Gallery-16275%

Every Macworld Expo brings us the Macworld Best of Show Awards, which is exactly what you'd expect it to be - the anointing of the Expo's best, most innovative new products, as chosen by the editors of Macworld magazine. Previously the award "ceremony" was closed to the public, but this year Macworld is shaking things up a bit by opening it up to all registered Macworld attendees. If your company has something worth considering, time is running out to get your submissions in. The deadline for guaranteed consideration is December 15th, 2006, so get cracking!By opening the awards to all, companies will get even greater exposure and attendees and contestants both will get to hear, first hand, why certain products were chosen. The Best of Show ceremony will be held on January 10, 2007, at 2:45 p.m. at the Moscone Center. We'll be there. Will you?

Chalk this one up to the Mac's growing popularity. Typically the Macworld San Fransisco expo is held in the Moscone center's South wing, which is just large enough to fit all the exhibitors. Not anymore, says Chris Saribay, who discovered that for MWSF 2007, IDG will actually be utilizing both Moscone South and, for the first time in years, North. According to Chris: "Apparently the main exhibit hall is already nearly filled to capacity, making sense to bring another exhibit hall online."Is this Good or Bad? Well, let's see:Upside: More Mac usersDownside: More Mac users (you know what I mean)Upside: More Mac productsDownside: More substandard Mac productsUpside: More press coverage for the platformDownside: More work to do Macworld weekUpside: More free swag from the boothsUpsides win!

  • Flickr Find: Seen at WWDC 2006 - "Introducing Vista 2.0" banner

If the WWDC 06 tension is becoming too much to bear, TUAW reader Gernot Poetsch probably isn't helping anything, as he sent a link to his Flickr account with a pic of some more banners in Moscone hall. If you check out his larger copy at Flickr, you can (almost) clearly see the banner at the top of the image says, and I quote: "Introducing Vista 2.0"; an attitude that clearly reflects just a slight bit of confidence on Apple's part in light of what is now four years of Vista setbacks. Another image in Gernot's photostream is titled Hasta la Vista. Vista, and while it isn't a clear shot of the banner, it doesn't sound far-fetched from all the other marketing previews we've been graced with so far. Here's hoping Apple previews a Mac OS X 10.5 on Monday that lives up to all the Vista jabs they've been taking. We'll post more of these goodies as we come upon them, but for now, you can resume your anxious pacing.
