Screens of Red Fly Studio's Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars are, in general, a joy to look at, not just because of technically lovely graphics, but because of creepy mood lighting and the ridiculous detail that went into modeling the mundane world in which the little guys wage their battles. We have kind of a systematic distrust of screenshots, but we've seen Mushroom Men and we can confirm that it looks great. These screens feature the same level we've seen previously, but it's the one with the giant mutated bunnies, so we don't mind. We're looking forward to the game's release so we can see more environments, though. There's also a puzzle-based minigame that appears to be based on Pipe Dream -- we're guessing it's the one on the minigame menu titled "Morel Mine Car." We'll try not to dwell on it. Nothing wrong with minigames, but we really hope we aren't forced to play Pipe Dream.%Gallery-18243%

  • Les Claypool puts a funky groove on Mushroom Men

This is something we didn't know: Primus frontman, and all-around awesome dude, Les Claypool, contributed music for Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars. To be more exact, he contributed tunes to capture the feel of each of the different races found in the game, which we imagine is quite the potent combo when paired with the lovely game art we've seen. You see, MTV Multiplayer recently had the Wii version of the game demoed for them, and they walked away pretty impressed with the game's audio offerings. The music seems to be procedural, and changes as the player accomplished tasks in the game world, shifting and reshaping in line with what is happening in the game. All in all, it seems that Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars is going to at least provide an interesting audio experience. Let's hope the gameplay is being developed with as much care! Not familiar with Les and Primus? Head on past the break for a pair of our favorite Primus tunes.%Gallery-18243%

  • The next big thing: Mushroom Men?

Published by the newly formed Gamecock and devloped by Red Fly Studio, a new title has been announced for new gen platforms. Entitled, ahem, Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars, we know almost nothing about the game. The teaser (embedded at the top of this post) shows off some ... interesting concept art set to some very stirring music (is that mushroom firing a bendy straw like a gun?). We have to admit, the juxtaposition of mushrooms at war has us intrigued. According to TeamXbox, the game puts players in the role of a three-inch-tall mushroom man who uses common household goods as weapons against enemy spore factions. Wow. We get the feeling that mushrooms were definitely involved in the development of this game ... in more ways than one. You can bet we'll be keeping an eye on it.
