If you've been desperately searching for a way to motion-control your brand new N97, look no further -- Zeemote's got your back. The company's JS1 controller has just added drivers for every S60 3rd and 5th Edition device on the market -- N97 and 5800 XpressMusic included -- plus a whole host of S60-based LGs and Samsungs like the INNOV8 and the KT770. Of course, that doesn't solve the whole issue of N-Gage incompatibility with many of these, but the JS1 can also be used for nifty parlor tricks like web browsing; combine that with the 5800's included desk stand and you've got the couch potato's ultimate mobile setup. • Nokia N86 8MP and N97 launching in UK today

    by

    06.19.2009

Most of us have our sights squarely fixed on the iPhone 3G S launch today, but in the UK, there are a couple of other heavyweights that are finally hitting retail: the N86 8MP and the N97. All About Symbian is covering the launch live, though it looks like there isn't much chaos and bedlam outside the Regent Street store -- maybe it has something to do with that other flagship store reflected in the window?

  • Vodafone dude mentions N97 Mini -- confused or loose-lipped?

    by

    06.18.2009

A moderator over on Vodafone Ireland's official forums -- seemingly in an effort to be as helpful as possible -- responded to a question about Nokia N97 availability this week by saying "Vodafone Ireland will not be launching the N97 but will be launching the N97 Mini later this year." He goes on to say that the carrier feels that the N97 Mini's "competitive pricing" will make it appeal to a broader range of customers. Of course, there is no N97 Mini, which inevitably leads us to one of two conclusions: either he's very, very confused, or he just outed a new phone before his employer or Nokia would've liked. For what it's worth, "N97 Mini" would stray well outside the bounds of normal Nokia naming convention, though we could definitely see a smaller version of the phone working with a tighter keyboard and a more 5800-ish display -- and the moderator's post was pulled later in the day, lending credence to the story. On the other hand, the same dude said a few days back that "we don't have a release data as of yet, but watch this space" in reference to the original N97, so it's anybody's guess what's going on here. Tiny touchscreen Nokia, anyone? [Via IntoMobile]

There are really too many choice rhymes here to pick just one as a representative sample of all the "dope" and "ill" on display in Nokia's new N97 ad featuring the lyrical stylings of LL Cool J. We recommend you check it out before he begins to attempt to threaten you with physical violence. Video is embedded after the break.[Thanks, Jorge]

  • Nokia N97 NAM preorders shipping in both colors

    06.12.2009

We've received confirmation from Nokia that preorders of the beastly N97 have now started shipping to American customers in both available colors, black and white. That puts the white model a couple days behind the black, true -- but any way you slice it, this still beats the online store's old estimate of July by a mile, so we can't complain too hard. Anyone out there already (creepily) strategically positioned on their porch in preparation for the FedEx dude's arrival later today?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Nokia N97 NAM unboxing

    06.09.2009

We've just taken delivery of one of the very first retail Nokia N97s ever to be sold anywhere, and we wanted you to revel in the experience with us. We haven't formed any impressions yet, but we're being told that the retail device includes some last-minute improvements to keyboard feel -- and we can confirm that it feels pretty usable (the tiny right-aligned space bar could still be an issue for some, though). Stay tuned over the coming days for plenty of coverage on this sucker, but for now, enjoy a quick unboxing, won't you?

  • Nokia N97 available tomorrow at US flagship stores

Sorry, preorderers -- you've once again gotten gamed by the quick-draw Nokia flagship stores in New York and Chicago who've received stock of the black version of the N97 today. You can't buy the units just yet, but they'll be available tomorrow morning -- the only catch is that there are established waitlists at both locations, so you might have to wait for those folks to burn through stock before you get your own. It'll run $699.99, so, you know... do what you've gotta do tonight to make sure those funds are available by sun-up tomorrow.[Thanks, Shoham]

  • Amazon's Nokia N97 release date slides back to June 30

    06.07.2009

We'd hoped that June 25 date would stay put -- or even move up a bit in our overly optimistic, idealistic world -- but at this point, things aren't looking good. Amazon has now updated its N97 availability date from June 25 to June 30, possibly reflecting some insider information they've received from Nokia that the phone's running a little behind schedule. Of course, first-party preorders aren't expected to ship until July, so if the June 30 thing seriously pans out, this still puts you ahead of the game. At any rate, there's one silver lining to this cloud: you can drool over the hands-on our colleagues over at Engadget Spanish have put together while you wait.[Thanks, Albert G.]

We're not quite sure what levers they pulled, but our compadres over at Engadget Spanish have managed to wrangle a retail N97 out of Nokia's tightly-clasped hands, and naturally, they've done us the honors of photographing it. We're hoping to snag a unit of our own soon, but 'til then, tap the read link for lots more shots and even a video. Yes, a video. Welcome to the internet.

  • Nokia N97 coming to the UK on June 19

    06.02.2009

We already know that Nokia is sending N97s far and wide this month, but now we have an exact date for its UK debut. Turns out that the company's Regent Street flagship store in London will get first dibs, hawking unlocked, unbranded N97s to all comers on June 18 for £499 (about $821) -- a princely sum that easily blows past the US MSRP of $699. Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, and 3 all follow a week later on June 26, ensuring that the ultra-early adopters will be paying through the nose for a few days before the subsidized sets show up. What the 19th date means for availability in other countries is unclear, but as you can imagine, we'll be pounding on the doors of the US flagships until we get some answers.

If you had any doubt about the reach of Nokia, the world's leading mobile handset maker, then check this: Nokia just announced the simultaneous June launch of its flagship N97 in more than 75 countries. We already had hints of this for the US and Western Europe but it's good to have it official. And with N97 chatter on the uptick recently, we're expecting to see this 3.5-inch QWERTY touchscreen slider running S60 5th sooner rather than later.

  • Nokia's N97 unboxed on video -- somehow, someway

We always heard that where there is a will, there is a way. Said mantra has never been more exemplified than in the video past the break, as someone halfway across this great planet has seemingly procured what could be the very first shipping N97. Still, we'd like to point out a few things here: first, Nokia has yet to officially ship these things, so there's at least a sliver of a chance that by mashing play, you'll actually be watching a KIRF unboxing, and in turn, supporting terrorism. Also, we can't understand a word the unboxer says, so again, he could be explaining just how elaborate of a fake it is, and we'd never know. Needless to say, you should definitely proceed at your own risk.Update: Seems another fellow got one, and he's got pictures to prove it.

What's better than taking delivery of a shiny new N97 right about now? If you answered "reading through the phone's support site," you're a sick puppy -- but we'll admit, we like the way you think. It's for those most bizarre individuals that we happily point out that Nokia's support pages for the Finnish superphone are now online, offering a full user's manual download, specs, an accessory guide, and discussion forum all in one convenient location. Don't knock yourself out, though -- save some energy for when you actually get the phone, alright? [Via MiVADiKA]

  • N97 disassembled on video... sort of

Are you dying to see Nokia's latest, the N97 ripped to shreds in glorious moving pictures? Well, that's too bad: we don't have that. What we do have, however, is a series of photographs of said shred-ripping, turned into a video. A creepy, silent film, if you will, complete with subtitles. Lack of movement and sound aside, it gives us a pretty great look at the innards of the handset, if that's what you're into. Sure, it's not The Goldrush, but if you want to see the N97 in a talkie, there's always that Royksopp video, right? Full video after the break.[Thanks, Mike]

  • Nokia N97 shipping from Amazon on June 25

    by
    Chris Ziegler

    05.28.2009

We're not sure how closely we can correlate this to shipments through Nokia's other retail partners and fulfillment of the direct preorders, but for what it's worth, Amazon is now declaring on no uncertain terms that the N97 will be "in stock on June 25." That's just under a month away -- a little later than we'd hoped, admittedly, placed squarely in the middle of the completely inevitable Palm / Apple fracas that will consume us all. If Nokia's history is any indication, it's entirely plausible to believe that these things will be in stock at the company's flagship stores in Chicago and New York by a few days before Amazon ships, but not for $603.99, that's for sure.[Thanks, Dymongoose]

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com. What's that? Robot companions and multiple dancing Robyns in the latest Röyksopp joint? We're there, dude. Oh, it gets better... somewhere in the 1:49 range the gadgetry gets ill when the flaxen-haired songstress whips out a Nokia N97 to text her robotic compatriots about the dance party happening up in her room. Yeah, an N97. It also makes a curtain-call appearance in the 2:48 realm, right before the blingee pregnancy test announces that Robyn is not, in fact, with child. Full, eye-opening video after the break.[Thanks, Derffy]

  • Nokia's Ovi store makes soft landing in a few markets, might be headed to your neck of the woods soon

With that May launch window closing fast, it looks like Nokia might get Ovi Store in under the proverbial wire: it just went live on Vodafone in Australia, which was soon followed by other carriers, and then Ireland and Singapore. According to a post that was subsequently pulled from Nokia's Conversations blog, Nokia confirmed the rollout and said that it was progressively moving the Ovi Store to "production servers," and that we could "expect a broader announcement and consumer availability soon." Unfortunately, since that post has been pulled, we're not really sure what to expect, but at least the lucky few with Ovi can beam back important missives on their Twittix apps about what life is like in the future. Above are shots of the store live on an N97.

  • Nokia N97 NAM launching June 2nd?

    05.17.2009

The Nokia Blog's got it on good authority that the Finnish phone maker's giving its North America distributors the heads up to expect the N97 to arrive on June 2nd for $699, although that price might end up lower. We've been hearing an expected June launch for some time, so it's definitely not out of the question. This does, however, serve as both an exciting and somewhat painful reminder that, should a couple other rumors pan out, June's gonna be a busy month for smartphones.
