  • Guild Wars 2 character artist talks costume design

One of the most prominent features of Guild Wars has always been its beautiful art style. That reputation carried over seamlessly as information about Guild Wars 2 began surfacing last year -- it was clear that the Tyria of the future would be just as gorgeous as the one we know today. One of the members of the talented team of artists at ArenaNet is Kristen Perry, the Guild Wars 2 character artist. Even if you don't know it, you're familiar with her work which she began for ArenaNet with Factions armor design, creating the majority of the Kurzick NPC clothing as well as some Ritualist and Assassin armor. In Nightfall, she designed all of the Elementalist armor as well as the most of the armor for the other professions. She's also responsible for all of Gwen's armor -- even the outfit in the Bonus Mission Pack, and her handiwork can even be seen throughout the game in the character models themselves. Kristen's no stranger to Tyria, and designing for Guild Wars 2 opened the door for a brand new series of challenges and opportunities to design something completely new. In the latest entry in the ArenaNet blog, she tells all about her latest project. Follow along after the jump to see what she had to say.

At the beginning of October, Guild Wars announced that their annual Halloween art contest was open for entries. After sorting through hundreds of submissions, they announced the winners on Friday. As always, fan creativity shone in the form of costumes, lawn decorations, drawings, carved pumpkins, and even a ceramic siege turtle that fires pumpkins instead of jade. ArenaNet seemed very happy with this year's entries: "We were so impressed by both the Halloween spirit and the quality of artistic talent in our community that it was hard to choose only ten winners and ten honorable mentions." Twenty winners were chosen from the submissions for some great prizes. The top three winners scored a signed copy of The Art of Guild Wars 2, the top ten received a signed Guild Wars art print, and all twenty winners won an exclusive Mad King's Guard minipet. Congratulations to all of the winners!

  • NCsoft PS3 'MOG' discontinued

So remember that announcement NCsoft made a few years back about working with Sony on a console MMO for the PS3? After many months of silence, VG247 has pried the news from an NCsoft Europe head has finally revealed that said project has long since been shelved. Apparently, the game was of a casual bent and seemed to hit a brick wall of some kind. While the reason behind the mysterious game's discontinued development may never be known, NCsoft is still interested in console development. And why wouldn't they be? It's a completely -- well, mostly -- untapped market that's just waiting for a company to offer something perfectly suited for it, like say, All Points Bulletin. Until that does happen, we'll just have to keep playing all our "massive online games" or whatever you'd like to call them on our personal computrons.[via Joystiq]

Brighton, U.K., based NCsoft Europe is hiring people to fill five positions just a month after cutting 70 jobs in a move representatives from the company called a transition to "have a stronger focus in marketing in sales." The new openings seem to confirm NCsoft EU's new direction, as all five jobs are either in or related to marketing. The available jobs are: Creative Services Coordinator EU Territory Marketing Assistant European Territory Brand Manager Online Sales Manager Sales Account Representative Not a bad line, but if you're not already able to work in the E.U., you may be out of luck. The site bears this disclaimer: "All of NCsoft Europe's job openings are for full time, on-site employees. We do not employ 'remote' staff. Potential employees must be able to work legally in the United Kingdom, and must either reside near Brighton, England or be willing to relocate. Relocation assistance is potentially available."

In the continuing saga of NCsoft, we get word that their European office in Brighton, UK has just laid off around 70 employees this morning. This new comes straight out of the offices themselves, and a short write-up over at GamesIndustry.biz. While the details have yet to be confirmed by NCsoft officials, it is said that only a handful of employees remain at the office. All of this news rides on the heels of last year's news regarding NCsoft's first round of layoffs and the closing of Tabula Rasa later this month. Does this mean an eventual closing of the office completely? Will this affect the development of future NCsoft products such as Aion or Guild Wars 2? None of this is known at this time, but be sure to keep your eye on Massively for any breaking new developments in this story.[Update: The original GamesIndustry.biz story has been removed and replaced.]

  • Opinions flare from ex-NCsoft employees about TR's closing

As Tabula Rasa approaches its end days, the anger, sadness and I-told-you-so sentiments are rising up more than ever. This week marks an interesting occasion where two former NCsoft employees each wrote detailed stories on their own perspectives regarding the sci-fi MMO's downward spiral.First we have this post by Adam Martin, former CTO of NCsoft Europe, where he explains his views on why the game failed. Granted, he admits he wasn't actually on the TR team, but he was privy to the internal mailing lists and information about the game from Alpha to launch. As a response, we have a post from Scott Jennings, who sums it all up fairly well with this statement: "The biggest failing, though, was that it was in development about twice as long and spent twice as much as it had any right to. And that's what promotes it, in this snarky outside blogger's view, from understandable failure to extinction-level company-slaying train wreck."Update: Although Adam Martin's post states that he was the European CTO at the time, we get word from NCsoft that he was never the CTO for NCsoft Europe. He was the Lead Programmer.

  • David Reid sets the record straight on NC West

Nobody can have failed to notice the announcement of NC West, which broke recently amid rumors of staffing reshuffles in various NCsoft studios. Although some key concerns were addressed very swiftly, many of our readers had plenty of questions to ask, and so did we.David Reid, appointed President of Publishing, was kind enough to give up considerable time yesterday for an interview. We discussed Guild Wars and Tabula Rasa, but the main focus was on the NC West announcement.Massively: We really do appreciate you guys talking to us, because there are a lot of Massively readers who are concerned with this announcement. It was kind of sudden – the NCsoft West thing just kind of snuck up on them, and they're not entirely sure about what's going on. Although you guys have put out a couple of statements so far about it, I think people are still a little unclear on it. David Reid: That's exactly why we are keen to talk with you. Let us be clear about whatever questions your readers have, and set things straight on that. Massively: Great! As a broad question: NC West sounds like (to us, and we want to make sure we have this clear) a conglomeration of the game development assets for NCsoft in the US, into a smaller number of groups than it is right now. Is that the primary goal?

No, of course he didn't drag his former employer through the muck or curse their good name. Stephen "Rockjaw" Reid is better than that. But the former Creative Concepts Manager for NCsoft Europe does talk a good bit with John and Matt (former hosts of Tabula Rasa's TabulaCast) on the Limited Edition Podcast about all things comic-related. Despite the bad news of his recent departure from NCsoft, Reid has just announced a new gig as Expo Community and Gaming Manager for the Eurogamer Expo. This is certainly good news, as Reid has always been loved by the gaming community. Reid's only comments on the podcast regarding his departure from NCsoft were, "It ultimately comes down to business, nothing more." He also discusses the reaction of his City of Heroes colleagues to the DC Universe Online development, and chats a good bit about his views of Champions Online. If you're into comic books and the popularity that comic books are gaining in the MMO space, this podcast may interest you.

NCsoft is doing some massive consolidation and bringing NC Interactive, NC Europe, NC Austin and ArenaNet under one umbrella: NC West. The publisher will focus on becoming the "world's premier western publisher of MMOs" ... we're sure Blizzard is shaking. By year's end, NC West's headquarters will be established in Seattle. The company also confirmed rumors that 58 positions at the company's UK office, most of which were in product development, are "potentially redundant." Joystiq's Corp-speak Translator®: They is fired.

    09.10.2008

Update: 'Minor reductions' have been reported at NC Austin: Tabula Rasa is once again confirmed as secure.Update 2: David Reid has told Kotaku.com that NCsoft will now be focusing on triple-A MMO titles, and moving away from lighter ones. Creating several online games for PS3 with Sony will also be important. In the midst of intense speculation and rumor, NCsoft today announced that it will be merging several subsidiaries under a unified banner, with a headquarters to be sited in Seattle. According to the press release, 'NCsoft's existing subsidiaries NC Interactive, NC Europe, NC Austin, and ArenaNet will be led as a unified organization under NC West with a dedicated focus towards becoming the world's premier western publisher of MMOs.' This throws new light on reports of job losses at NC Europe, and indeed gives a greater clarity to the recent events at NC Austin. The job losses at NC Europe are not yet tallied, with reports varying from 50 to 70 employees, but we can confirm, with great personal sadness, that Stephen 'Rockjaw' Reid is one of those affected. Rockjaw was the Creative Concepts manager at NC Europe, well regarded by the community, and the driving force behind many successful events, not to mention putting in sterling work for Draw the World Together.

  • 'No current plans to can Tabula Rasa' says dev

    09.10.2008

Last night, gamesindustry.biz broke a double rumor: that NCsoft Europe would be shedding staff (not closing altogether, as is being reported elsewhere) and that Tabula Rasa would be closing shortly. While we have received no official comment as yet on the alleged job losses, we are delighted to report that NCsoft staff member 'Ziggidy Zaggidy' has stated outright over on planettr.com that there are 'no current plans to can Tabula Rasa'.We should also add here that contrary to the claim at gamesindustry.biz (repeated by us) that 'speculation that Tabula Rasa was to be discontinued wasn't addressed' last time similar rumors circulated, the NCsoft staff did actually state that the Austin studio changes would not affect Tabula Rasa. We apologise for not refuting the gamesindustry.biz claim sooner. It seems the rumors of job losses are at least partly accurate: poster CMGangrel on planettr.com has confirmed this. However, to put the job loss rumors into perspective, we would remind readers that the original source for this particular rumor - an article at gamesindustry.biz - referred to the loss of only 50 jobs. According to information from September last year, NCsoft Europe had originally employed 112 staff, and then went on to employ over 100 more when the company expanded. A loss of 50 jobs would, therefore, not amount to studio closure by a long chalk.

With a report spookily similar to those that surfaced recently about the NCsoft Austin offices, gamesindustry.biz is reporting that NCsoft Europe in Brighton, England may be about to shed staff. According to the report, 'a number of sources close to the company' have stated that about 50 positions would be lost, following a decision to cancel an as-yet unnamed MMO project, presumably that for which some concept art had already appeared. The report also makes a claim that will undoubtedly have Tabula Rasa fans up in arms: 'It is also thought that the company's troubled MMO Tabula Rasa will be discontinued at some point in the coming months due to continuing poor subscriber numbers.' As devotees of the game will know, this isn't the first time rumors have surfaced concerning the future of Tabula Rasa. Last time around, those rumors weren't ever addressed. Tabula Rasa players have been working hard to encourage new players to try the game, and we hope for their sake that this latest report is inaccurate.Last time rumors circulated about an NCsoft office being under threat, the reality - though unpleasant - turned out to be substantially less severe than reports had anticipated. An official comment from NCsoft is expected within the next 24 hours; we'll be watching for any news.

Who better to talk about the Leipzig Games Convention and the gaming industry in general than the people who develop the games. In NCsoft Europe's most recent official podcast, the community team discusses the convention itself, answers live questions from fans and lets us know about the state of new projects such as the highly-anticipated Aion. The interesting thing about this audio is it's recorded live at the convention in German and English. Each question is answered in both languages, so if you're wondering what Guild Wars is in German, it's Guild Wars. How often do you get the opportunity to ask a big-time developer a question and actually hear their answer? Unless you travel to a gaming conference and stand in line for an hour, this isn't likely to happen, but on the next episode of TabulaCast, the hosts John and Matt will be interviewing Tom Potter, the leader designer for Tabula Rasa. They will be asking him questions submitted by the listeners regarding the game and his new role in the lead designer seat after taking over for Paul Sage last month. Of course, not all questions will be on the show, but only the very best will be chosen. This is a very exciting interview for the folks at TabulaCast who have previously interviewed some of the "leaders" in the Tabula Rasa player community including PlanetTR's main admin DeadRinger, Ten Ton Hammer's TR lead Tony "Radar X" Jones as well as both Community Coordinators: Amy "Critters" Crider and Tia "Avatea" from NCsoft Europe.
