Last week, Konami released the inscrutable Otomedius Excellent in North America. You might have missed the release, as it was delayed until the absolute busiest game release season of the year, allowing it to fly into retail undetected. It's a Gradius-inspired side-scrolling shooter for Xbox 360 starring anime girls dressed as spaceships. It was released in both standard and limited editions, the latter including your very own Otomedius pillowcase. Naturally, we had questions. Questions like "Pillowcase?" and "what?" After the break, Konami staff, including producer Koji Igarashi -- who you may know from a certain other whip-smart Konami series -- help us understand Otomedius Excellent.%Gallery-139092%

Hey, you know how you've been shopping for a pillowcase with pictures of girls in spaceship suits? Well, we can finally tell you where to find one, and it includes an Xbox 360 shooting game as a bonus. One day before its pre-E3 event (which would have been the perfect time to announce something like this), Konami announced that Otomedius Excellent, its Gradius-esque anime-girl shmup, will be out in North America on July 19. It'll be available on disc in either a $29.99 version, or a $49.99 Special Edition which includes an art book, soundtrack, and the aforementioned home decor item, a " 2-sided pillowcase featuring the girls of Otomedius." Check out the full-sized boxart after the break. If you're immediately humiliated, you're not ready for the pillowcase.

  • Otomedius Excellent still on the way in 2011

After Konami pushed back the release date of Otomedius Excellent in Japan, it was safe to assume that the North American release would be delayed, as well. Actually, we didn't have to just assume that the original date wouldn't hold -- Winter 2010 has come and gone! Though it's not a terribly specific update, Konami has provided an estimate of "later this year" for the weird Xbox 360 shmup, along with some new screenshots (seen in the gallery below). At the very least, it's confirmation that Konami is going ahead with its unlikely plan to localize this game.%Gallery-122091%

  • Otomedius Excellent dated for Japan ... again

Otomedius Excellent might as well have been titled "Game for Japan Only," being a shmup starring anime girls wearing spaceship parts, but for some reason Konami has announced plans to localize the Xbox 360 oddity anyway. It was set to come out last winter, but a delay in Japan pushed it to spring. A new trailer, after the break, shows an April 21 release date for that region; the new American date is currently unannounced. Other things featured in the trailer include every anime stereotype of the last 10 years, and just enough jiggling that we feel ashamed for posting it.

  • Otomedius Excellent delayed in Japan

Otomedius Excellent, Konami's peculiar girls-as-spaceships shooter for Xbox 360, likely won't be making its appointed winter release date in North America. Konami announced a delay for the game in Japan, from fall 2010 to spring 2011, "due to a delay in production." If it won't be out until spring in Japan, it definitely won't be out elsewhere until at least then. GameStop lists a January date, though New Year's Day is a suspiciously placeholder-like release date. For those of you who, like us, have a casual interest in this game, we're sorry to remind you of its existence only to let you know it's being delayed. "Hey, remember this game? You can't have it." If you have yet to be introduced to Otomedius, you can see the intro movie on the Japanese website. Keep clear of visiting family members -- or, really, anyone -- because you will be humiliated. • 'Otomedius Excellent' brings cute bullet hell to Xbox this winter

Fans of parody shmups like Parodius, take note: the impossible has happened, and Konami has announced a new shmup for North America. Otomedius Excellent, an Xbox 360 exclusive due this winter, is the first localized iteration of Konami's weird shooter franchise featuring anime girls in the form of classic Konami ships. Like a girld dressed up as Gradius's Vic Viper. There's even a Belmont for some reason.
