  • Show and Tell: About a bag

We recently brought up the never-ending case discussion again, because, like so many of our readers, we just can't find that perfect bag that really reflects how we feel about the DS. That's why we love it when readers let us know they've taken matters into their own hands. We like to live vicariously through the crafters among us, because they design the most awesome things -- like these themed DS bags.Reader Pamela made a bitchin' Peach bag for herself, complete with loads of zippers and pockets, and an extra bag for, well, extras (like her phone). To complete the look, she got Peach accessories for her handheld, and the result is pinkariffic. In fact, the bag was such a success that she ended up making one for her brother, and another for her brother's friend ... and they're all hand sewn. Yeah, we're jealous. So what have you done lately? From crafts to cakes to collections ... whatever you've got, if it has a little Nintendo flavor, we want to see it. Just take some pictures (or copy your web album links) and send them to showmeit [at] dsfanboy [dot] com. We'll take care of the rest.

Quick, call your mom, your sister, whomever has the baking skills in your life. Tell them that they have a difficult task ahead. You desire some cupcakes that compare to the look and, we're fairly certain, the delicious taste of these treats presented above. Well, maybe we just desire some, but what's good for us is good for you, right?[Via Boing Boing]

  • Forbes Fictional 15: Princess Peach at the bottom

    12.13.2007

Since when did Peach divorce Mario? Since when did Mario actually do something about the sexual tension between the two (other than in your disgusting desktop wallpaper of the two "getting down")? Regardless, Forbes has made up some wacky stuff regarding the princess of Mushroom Kingdom, ranking her at the bottom of its list of the richest fictional folks. With a net worth of $1.3 billion, we're wondering where Forbes came up with the conversion rate on coins. Considering they're naturally created from thin air and by the very blocks of earth that make up that fine kingdom, we would think the conversion to our real currency would be low. So, we can understand how her worth would be on the lower side, but did they look into real estate value also? Come on, her castle alone has to be worth a ton.

Is this not the cutest frickin' iPod case you've ever seen? Martha Wozniak knits not only these Luigi-themed cozies, but Mario and Princess Peach pouches as well. If only they could fit a Nintendo DS, that would be perfect! We're sure that many of you would gladly pay a king's ransom to secure one of these -- they look like great Christmas gifts -- but they're available on her Etsy shop for only six dollars each! Button your overalls and jump past the post break for images of the Mario and Princess Peach iPod cozies.

  • Dojo update: Peach gets a Final Smash

Peach's Final Smash maneuver isn't really in line with most of the other brawler's super move, as she lures her foes to sleep and takes the opportunity to gorge herself on the fruit by which her name is derived. Or, she could take the opportunity to launch her enemies into the stratosphere. So, it's a difficult decision to make: heal yourself or destroy your enemies.%Gallery-6869%%Gallery-3347%

  • Mario Kart Wii just got a bit less kartish

    10.10.2007

If you're a Nintendo fan, today has been one hell of a ride. Now, we find out that Mario Kart Wii will feature bikes, contradicting the very game itself (it is kart racing, afterall). Still, variety is the spice of life, so we're not complaining. Well, actually, we'd like to complain just a bit about the release date being bumped back to Spring 2008, but we guess you can't rush greatness. Also, a low quality trailer (via Go Nintendo) can be found past the post break.

This Peach cosplayer manages to look pretty elegant in the dress despite the backwards cap and dudeness. Seriously, I wanted to laugh at first, but-- at least within the context of PAX-- he's kind of pulling it off! I look a lot more awkward in this (and every) picture, and I'm totally wearing pants. Props to Casey the Peach cosplayer, and we hope he made it through the day without developing an aversion to cameras. After the break is an impressive Link cosplayer dressed for the icy depths of PAX Under the Sea.[Update: corrected Casey's name. Sorry-- I ran into too many Mikes, I think.]

And the final update over at the dojo for the week reveals one of the Subspace Army's (which is part of that whole Subspace Emissary thing) bosses, Petey Piranha. As you can see, he holds both Peach and Zelda hostage in their own cage and depending on which one you damage more, that's the hostage you save. But, what about the unsaved princess?%Gallery-3447%

And our last dojo update for the week reveals none other than the princess of Mushroom Kingdom. Peach will return with many of her same moves in tact, allowing her to still utilize her Toad Defense maneuver and parasol during battle. She does look a lot better, though, as there is a lot more detail to her character design in Brawl.%Gallery-3347%

  • Who knew Mario could be so intense?

    08.06.2007

This fanart is so powerful that it seems to have crushed the Warp Pipe forums under the weight of its own pile of Diggs. We can understand why-- we've certainly been enjoying staring at it for a few hours. The full image is after the break, but even in the detail shown above, you can see the insane shading and dynamic movement that make Neo-Geo Forums user hermegildo's drawing so compelling. Faced with a dead Peach and a slavering, hulking Bowser, the usually-jovial Mario abandons his "Okey-dokey"s and flies into battle, fireballs blazing. It completely, awesomely rejects the mood of the Mario series.[Thanks, Jason!]

  • A new princess for Super Mario Galaxy?

    07.18.2007

Crowned and blonde, just like our fair Princess Peach, this new gal materialized in Famitsu's latest preview of Super Mario Galaxy. The Japanese magazine identifies her as Rosetta, but doesn't clarify whether or not her name bears any deeper meaning or relation to the famed translation stone. Those of you who fear any drastic change to your beloved franchise or the expected routine need not worry -- Rosetta won't be replacing Peach's role in this intergalactic adventure. As has been stated several times since the game's announcement, Mario will be touring the cosmos in search of his kidnapped love, Ms. Toadstool.

The title is imperative for a reason. Seriously, you should either be working on a t-shirt right now or headed out to Michaels to pick up supplies. Oh, or reading this post. That's totally fine.To make this Princess Peach shirt, HackerZen user Lenore adapted the technique used by a very faithful reader to make his Phoenix Wright shirt, adding the extra step of drawing a grid on the shirt with a washable marker, then filling in pixels to make a big sprite. Excellent. But don't just default to Mario. There are a lot of sprites out there. Get creative![Via GoNintendo]

  • Mario Strikers Charged - dribbling ever closer

There's a new microsite for Mario Strikers Charged. There is little more than a promo video and some boxart at present, but more is apparently on the way. We got a quick look at the game last month, and thought it seemed pretty fun, particularly in multiplayer. The game will feature online play, the first to do so in Europe and Australia, with ranked matches limited to players in the same region. You'll also be able to swap friend codes for unranked matches - friend codes will be assigned to your Mii rather than your console, so if you happen to share a console with someone whose friends you hate, you won't have to play them. We're also looking forward to trying the Mega Strikes: where the ball splits into five shots, which your opponent has to block with the Wiimote. Taking multiple shots at the keeper always used to get us in trouble at school, but here it's positively encouraged - you'll get a goal for each one that hits the back of the net.Mario Strikers Charged kicks and screams its way into Europe on May 25th, with other regions to follow.

  • That Mario made of paper and how he makes us laugh

    04.17.2007

MTV's Stephen Totilo got the chance to chat with Nintendo of America writer Erik Peterson, who's had his work cut out for him with the release of Super Paper Mario. While Peterson explains that most of the work was done for him, as the Japanese development team Intelligent Systems crafted most of the wonderful humor found in the game, he still had his fair share of input on the game's humor. A lot of this comes from the fact that Super Paper Mario is the first real Nintendo game that openly acknowledges the player and shatters the fourth wall. Peterson and gang didn't take every opportunity to poke fun, however, as they did leave some Virtual Boy jokes out (the Virtual Boy can be found in Francis' collection, on the shelf in his room. "I feel sour that I didn't think of that," Peterson says.Is the humor of Super Paper Mario your cup of tea, or is your mustache so thick and bold as to be beyond such petty tomfoolery?

  • A not so fairytale wedding

    04.12.2007

Subscribers to Nintendo's mailing list received a classy invitation to Bowser and Peach's wedding early this morning. Posing for a photo to promote Super Paper Mario's release, the groom looks none too happy about the event. If the crossed arms and eye-contact avoidance aren't indication enough of his displeasure, then the literal and metaphorical distance between the couple gives it away.Years from now, the Koopa King will look back on his glory days of battling plumbers and racing karts, regretting that he ever gave into the princess' pressures, trapping himself in this loveless marriage. He'll sigh and wonder how old age crept up on him. After finishing his cigarette on the driveway -- Peach hates it when he smokes inside -- he'll saunter back into the house that's never felt like home, pushing the memories of what once was out of his mind.Head past the post break for the full invitation.

  • Target pimping out DS Lites

Here we thought it was enough that Target was selling our favorite games on the cheap, but that's not the only gem in their huge DS sale. If you happen to be in the market for a new DS Lite, you can also pick up one of these bad boys, though "bad boys" may not be the most appropriate phrase, considering the bedazzling, beaded array of special edition skins on display here. It's a shame these aren't sold separately. Do we really need a reason to pick up another DS Lite, considering we all own like eight? No, we need reasons not to buy another! No wonder the games are on sale ....[Via Gay Gamer]

  • Super Paper Mario GDC '07 impressions

    by
    Kyle Orland

    03.08.2007

If you only saw screenshots like the one above, you'd be forgiven for mistaking Super Paper Mario for an All-stars-style update of the original Super Mario Bros. When you see the 95 percent complete build on the GDC show floor, though, it's easy to see that the game is a true continuation of the Paper Mario series, with a few significant changes thrown in.Everything you remember from Intelligent Systems' two Paper Mario games is here -- the irreverent writing style, the smoothly animated flat characters set in a detailed polygonal world and the items and leveling structure will all be familiar to Paper Mario fans. The now-familiar Paper Mario sidekicks also return in the form of Pixls -- little hovering companions that can perform specialized functions like turning into bombs or grabbing nearby enemies. What's changed is how you interact with the enemies -- through platform-style jumps instead of turn-based battles. It's amazing how the lack of jarring, momentum-stealing battles every 30 seconds transforms the game into a more fluid and much more enjoyable experience. The other major change, as has already been shown in countless online videos, is the ability to switch between a 2D side-view and a 3D over the shoulder view with a tap of the A button. It's interesting to see the familiar 2D environments converted into sometimes-complex, layered 3D environments, though the puzzles that used this mechanic in the demo seemed pretty facile. The Wii's motion-sensitive controls allow for some occasional aerial acrobatics, but for the most part, the game brings back the simple run and jump control scheme of the NES Mario games with little embellishment. Which is just fine by us. Just because the Wii allows for motion-sensitive controls doesn't mean they should be shoehorned in when other, simpler controls work just as well or better.

We're not based in Kansas City, which isn't so much a bad thing, but it does keep us from receiving certain newspapers on a regular basis. One writer for the Kansas City Star had a few things to say about the DS Lite and a certain game for it known as Super Princess Peach. Stating that she "never thought I'd be one of those people who would choose a video game over a party," Jeneé Osterheldt has first-hand felt the fever we all so frequently fail from: Nintendo fever. So whether you want to consider her personal experience a downward spiral of self-loathing and disgust akin to how one gets hooked on, and subsequently dies from, drugs or a clever look at the appeal of gaming in the modern world, it's all an interesting read.[Via Go Nintendo]
