Every Wednesday, Chase Christian of Encrypted Text invites you to enter the world of shadows, as we explore the secrets and mechanics of the rogue class. This week, we discuss some of the awesome rogue items that help define our class' image. I remember the first time I was ever kicked from a guild. At the time, my main character was my very first rogue, who was a new level 60. I browsed around the realm forums for any guilds recruiting and found one that seemed to fit my schedule. I started raiding with them, and everything seemed to be going great. Well, it was going great, until I decided to argue with a hunter about weapons. The raid had a Core Hound Tooth drop for them in Molten Core, and a hunter had used his DKP to win the item. I saw him walking around Ironforge with it the next day. I argued with him that a rogue should've had first priority for it, since it's one of our main weapons. His stance was that any weapon a hunter could use was a "hunter weapon," or else Blizzard would've made it so that they couldn't use it. His other weapon was an Azuresong Mageblade that he claimed boosted his Serpent Sting and Arcane Shot damage. It turns out he was a high-ranking officer of the guild, and our spat was grounds for a /gkick. Luckily for us, there are a few items in game that rogues can take claim of. These items were designed specifically with us in mind and have become instantly recognizable symbols of our class to everyone.

Yesterday, the official World of Warcraft website announced a new Blizzard-sponsored contest to accompany Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain's new song Rogues Do It From Behind. The machinima community will eat this one right up. What do you need to do? Create a music video for L70ETC's new song, which can be downloaded right on the contest page. The video can be no larger than 50 MB and must be recorded in .WMV, .MOV, or .AVI formats. The rewards are pretty swanky, too. Three Grand Prize winners will receive an 8GB iPod Touch, and the five First Place winners will get a G15 Logitech keyboard and a signed copy of the World of Warcraft Battlechest.Personally, I'm wondering how long they've been sitting on this song. It's a fun song, don't get me wrong, but it's a little outdated. Perdition's Blade? Really? I suppose Netherblade came with The Burning Crusade, but the rest is pretty old school!

  • Gaia Online's virtual gear gets real

I haven't played Gaia Online at all, and we've only mentioned it once or twice here so far on Massively, but I am really impressed by their Gaia Gear online store. They are apparently taking in-game items, and recreating them in real-life form. Now, these items are all "donation items" (now known as Monthly collectibles)-- they're designed and sold by Gaia for real money, supposedly to support the server and associated costs of the game. So basically these are RMT items in-game, not special loots available only in certain places. But it is incredibly cool that they've faithfully recreated this stuff. And I can't help but imagine what it would be like for other games to do this. What if you could buy a Perdition's Blade to commemorate all that time you spent getting one in Molten Core? Or a real-life model of a Hulk, or actual reproductions of player-created items in Second Life? I'm sure this isn't a new idea (we're already willing to pay large amounts of money to make virtual items and people real). But it is an exciting one.[Via Wonderland]
