Remember Introversion's plans to port DEFCON to handhelds? Yeah, we didn't either, because that was like two years ago. It turns out that that a DS version of the stylized strategy game was actually completed in conjunction with Pinnacle Software, who ran into some ... trouble, of the all-too-familiar financial variety.Introversion has reacquired the rights to the DS game and now hopes to find a publishing partner, in order to get it out worldwide in the third quarter of this year. "With the DSi flying off the shelves recently," Introversion's Mark Morris said, "we believe that there will be particular interest in a finished DS product with such a great track record, especially as the RTS/Strategy sector is so poorly served on the platform."

Doublesix has today announced a new upcoming PSN game called Burn Zombie Burn. Available in early Q1 2009, Burn Zombie Burn is a cartoony arcade shooter which sees you, Bruce, fighting off the undead masses. The emphasis seems to be placed on building up a high score (as all arcade games should). Multipliers are achieved for setting zombies on fire, but doing so also makes them run faster. The game will have several different game modes, lots of weapons, eight different types of zombies and two-player co-op and versus modes. No indication as to whether these will be online or offline, though. Doublesix has sought to create addictive, "just one more go" gameplay coupled with funny zombie humor. We'll no doubt see more of the game before its release early next year.

  • Doodle Hex screens to tide us over

Tragnarion Studios' Doodle Hex was initially slated for a June 2008 release in the UK, but with so little June left in 2008 it's clear that the wait for the puzzler has been extended a bit. Further clues can be found on publisher Pinnacle Software's website. Well, not so much "further clues" as "definitive proof" -- the site lists a July 11 date.In lieu of actually releasing the game, the publisher released new screenshots of the versus puzzler. We think the concept of Doodle Hex -- drawing series of runes on the touch screen in rapid succession to send combos of attacks, status ailments, and other effects toward an opponent -- seems like it could make for an interestingly fast-paced game. Or a confusing mess of rune shapes we can't remember! One or the other.%Gallery-17846%[Via press release]

  • Doodle Hex trailer lacks doodling, hexing

To be honest, this Doodle Hex trailer completely vexes us. For one, it's entirely devoid of gameplay footage. For us, when we check out a trailer for a game, we usually expect gameplay footage from that game. But, hey, maybe that's just us.Then again, it's a puzzle game. So we pretty much know the score.%Gallery-17846%[Via Go Nintendo]

We fully approve of video tutorials for puzzle games. It's often a lot easier to show us the new mechanic of a puzzler than it is to describe which blocks you arrange in what formation, etc. Unfortunately, the tutorial for Doodle Hex is no help at all. It starts off well, introducing all of the onscreen elements -- but then it skips the part about what those onscreen elements do or how to use them or what's going on. We feel more confused now after seeing the rapid-fire combat than we did before watching this "tutorial." At least we can enjoy the announcer, who delivers his lines with hilariously false, sarcastic enthusiasm. "You draw magical symbols known as runes! That's ... so great! I am completely enjoying this job."
